    Effects of temperature and pH on the oxygen consumption Rate of sudanonautes (Convexonautes aubryi) floweri (de man) (crustacea: decapoda)

    The oxygen consumption rate of a freshwatersub-terrestrial crab, Sudanonautes floweri in relation to different temperatures and pHwas investigated. The average temperatureand pH of the crab\'s peaty stream habitat were 29.50C and 7.5 respectively. The lethal temperatures at pH 7.0 recorded for the species were 14.50C and 34.50C respectively. The oxygen consumption rate (Q) within the temperature range of 210C – 310C increased with temperature but decreased in the zones of temperature stress (≤ 160C and ≥ 310C). There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between weight specific oxygen consumption (QW-1) of the male and female crabs. The oxygen consumption rate was positively correlated with the body weight of the crabs (r = 1.0); but was inversely related to the unit weight of the crab per hour (r = -0.95). The average oxygen consumption of the animal at 30 0C and pH 7.0 was 53.1 μg O2 g-1 h-1.     Palynotaxa and Parasitic Loads of Nigerian Currency: Potential Sources of Microbial Transmittance

    Currency notes are handled by a large number of people under a variety of personal and environmental conditions. A total of ninety six samples of one hundred naira denomination of Nigerian notes were procured from seven Local Government Areas (LGA) of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The aim of the study was to determine the palynotaxa and parasitic load prevalent on currency notes. The leachates of currency notes were obtained and subjected to acetolysis and examined microscopically. Twenty six fungal spores type were recorded and were highly dominated by spores of Libertelli spp., Botrytis spp. and Spadicoides spp. Pollen achieved 54 % of the total bio-particles, whereas fungal spores and parasitic worms achieved 35.2 % and 10.60 %, respectively. The presence and relative abundance of these palynotaxa and parasites in currency notes affirms their propensity to spread vectors of diseases

    Perceptions of a self-management intervention for adolescents with sickle cell disease

    Objective: Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at increased risk for complications from their disease during their adolescent and young adult (AYA) years. The risk of morbidity in AYAs with SCD can be decreased with improved self-management. Existing self-management interventions typically focus on one aspect of self-management (e.g., adherence) and do not address factors that activate patients (knowledge, motivation, self-efficacy, and social support) to self-manage. Sickle Cell Thrive (SCThrive) is a mixed in-person/online, technology-enhanced (use of a mobile app), group self-management intervention that targets patient activation. To determine the most clinically significant intervention components, a qualitative study was conducted. Method: Participants were 19 AYAs (Mage = 17.05) with SCD who participated in individual semistructured phone interviews after completing SCThrive. Interview content was coded using a grounded-theory approach to generate themes related to SCThrive’s feasibility, acceptability, and motivation for and impact on self-management. Results: SCThrive was reported to be highly feasible due to the mixed in-person/online format and acceptable because they learned skills to manage SCD in a group of AYAs with SCD. Action planning and pain/mood tracking appeared to be key factors in motivating AYAs for self-management. Participants reported continuing to use self-management skills post-SCThrive (self-efficacy) including applying them to other domains of their lives (e.g., educational/vocational). Conclusions: Study results provide data that can be leveraged to enhance the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of SCThrive and other self-management interventions. Findings can also inform clinical and mobile health interventions to increase self-management in this population

    The Relationship between Selected Anthropometric Indices and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Apparently Healthy Young Adults in a Nigerian Community

    Background and Aim: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a useful tool for establishment of baseline fitness status and monitoring of physical activity level. Therefore, it may by extension serve as health risk index. However, studies that have determined the correlation between anthropometric indices and CRF in apparently healthy young adults is difficult to find in other to preempt preventive actions before pathology develops. Materials and Methods: Using a descriptive correlational research design, 325 participants (160 males, 165 females) with mean age of 21.87±2.41 years were sampled. Tape measure, stop watch, metronome, sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, height meter, bathroom weighing scale, modified Borg’s exertion scale and step benches were used to obtain the blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, rate of perceived exertion, height, weight, waist circumference and cardiorespiratory fitness was estimated using the mean heart rate responses of the participants. The data was summarized using frequency count, percentages, range, mean, standard deviation, Independent t-test and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation at alpha level of 0.05. Results: CRF significantly correlated with post-test systolic blood pressure (p= 0.004), post-test diastolic blood pressure (p= 0.010) and resting heart rate (p= <0.0001) but not with BMI (p= 0.133), waist circumference (p= 0.098), pre-test systolic blood pressure (p= 0.155), pre-test diastolic blood pressure (p= 0.121), resting respiratory rate (p= 0.631), and respiratory rate recovery (p= 0.478). Conclusion: CRF can be used as an index to quantify in apparently healthy participants, level of cardiovascular and respiratory related disease risks. It is necessary to emphasize the importance of physical activity in order to improve one’s cardiorespiratory fitness and minimize the risk of cardiorespiratory associated diseases

    Screening of Locally Available Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus) for Repellency Action against Aedes aegypti

    In Nigeria, re-emergence of diseases caused by Aedes mosquito borne pathogens, and challenges associated with existing control tools occur. This necessitates an improved insecticide-based tool for use in Integrated Vector Management. So, repellent action of Cymbopogon citratus essential oil (EO) on Aedes aegypti (Linn.) was tested. The EO from C. citratus plant sourced from Awka, was extracted by hydro distillation, and the phytochemicals analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Repellent action of the EO on unfed Ae. aegypti was assessed using "WHO arm-in-cage" method. In triplicate, arms of human volunteers were treated with different concentrations (50.0, 25.0, 12.5, 6.25 and 3.125 % v/v) of the EO and submitted to 25-caged, unfed Ae. aegypti for 1 minute in every 30 minutes. β-cedrenes, kaempferol, and thujopsene dominated the 13 phytochemicals identified. The standard (Odomos®) and all EO concentrations recorded 100 % repellency on application. At 30 minutes, EC99.9 value was25.0 %, concentrations ≥ 62.5 % v/v gave 100 % repellency (p > 0.05). At 60 minutes, EC99.9 value was 30.68 %, concentrations ≥ 12.5 % v/v gave 100 % repellency (p > 0.05). At 90 to 120 minutes, 50 % concentration maintained 100 % repellency (p < 0.05), EC99.9 value was 48.79 % at 120 minutes. Recording 120 minutes protection time with no adverse effect, 50 % concentration showed equal potency as Odomos®. Research to isolate the active ingredients in the EO for incorporation into beneficial health and economic products is desirable.

    Dynamic response of blast loaded Hollow Cylindrical and Truncated Conical shells

    Hollow cylindrical and truncated conical shells depict enhanced torsional and shear resistance compared to beams and plates and are ubiquitously used in structures in aeronautics, submarines, wind turbines, pressure vessels, and transmission pylons. Upon extensive localised blast, these elements undergo local and global deformation and failure. The detrimental damage to the shell depends on the stand-off and charge mass and is proportional to the emerged local dynamic stresses and inelastic deformations. Large localised translations relocate the structure’s original pivot point and induce global rotations about the new one which raises the probability of structural collapse. In this work, we examine large plastic deformations of hollow cylindrical and truncated conical shells subject to a range of pulse pressures emanated from high explosives. Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI)-based Finite Element (FE) models were developed to discern the characteristics of blasts at various stand-offs and functions were proposed to link load parameters to structural, material, and geometric properties

    Mobile health use predicts self-efficacy and self-management in adolescents with sickle cell disease

    Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with significant health challenges that often worsen during adolescence. Living with SCD requires a substantial amount of self-management and mobile health (mHealth) holds considerable promise for assessing and changing behaviors to improve health outcomes. We integrated a mobile app as an adjunct to a group intervention (SCThrive) and hypothesized that more engagement with the mHealth app would increase self-management and self-efficacy for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with SCD. Twenty-six AYA ages 13–21 years (54% female; 46% HbSS genotype; all African-American/Black) received six weekly group sessions (three in-person, three online). Participants were provided with the mobile app (iManage for SCD) to record progress on their self-management goals and log pain and mood symptoms. The Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ-5) assessed self-management skills and the Patient Activation Measure (PAM-13) assessed self-efficacy at baseline and post-treatment. Logging on to the app more frequently was associated higher mood ratings (r = .54, CI[.18, .77], p = .006) and lower pain ratings (r = −.48, CI[−.77, −.02], p = .04). Regression analyses demonstrated that after controlling for scores at baseline, the number of logins to the app predicted self-management skills (p = .05, η2 = .17) and possibly self-efficacy (p = .08, η2 = .13). Our study findings indicate that it can be challenging to maintain engagement in mHealth for AYA with SCD, but for those who do engage, there are significant benefits related to self-management, self-efficacy, and managing pain and mood

    Stress Among Parents of Hospitalized Infants in NICU: Effects on Parental Needs and Expectations

    Abstract. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) environment has the potential to exacerbate stress for parents of infants admitted to the unit. This study investigated the stress among parents of hospitalized infants in neonatal intensive care unit, and its effects on parental needs and expectations. Convenient sampling method was used to select 216 parents of at-risk infants in the NICU from two Teaching Hospitals in the South-East Zone of Nigeria. Two research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Parental Self -report Scale on coping measures were used to measure the stress among the parents. A parent -infant demographic information was obtained and used to determine the extent to which the characteristics serve as stress predictors. Mean score, standard deviation (SD) and Spearman Rank correlation Coefficient (rho) were used to answer the research questions while Chi-square, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney U tests were adopted in testing the null hypotheses at 0.01 level of significance. Parental stress for NICU infant behaviour and appearance significantly correlated with parental role alteration while infant gestational age correlated with parental stress for NICU staff behaviour and communication. Significant differences resulted in parental self-report of coping measures and their role alterations with regard to number of children born by parents and across the fertility history of the parents respectively. Parents of infants in the NICU need to take more active part in decision making and care of their infants

    Isolation, Growth and Identification of Chlorpyrifos Degrading Bacteria from Agricultural Soil in Anambra State, Nigeria

    Abstract The extensive use of pesticides is one of the major causes of pollution of soil and water environments. The current method for removing such contaminants from the environment through biodegradation has been shown to be more effective than any other method. Three pesticide degrading bacteria were isolated and identified through cultural and biochemical tests as strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serretia marcescens and Klebsiella oxytoca. Their growth in mineral salt medium supplemented with 20mg/l of Chlorpyrifos was monitored at optical density of 600nm. The result showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa had maximum growth in ten days, while Serretia marcescens and Klebsiella oxytoca recorded highest growth after six days of incubation. HPLC analysis of the residual Chlorpyrifos after 14 days incubation showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa was able to degrade 60% of the pesticide; Klebsiella oxytoca degraded 54%, while Serretia marcescens had 53% reduction of the pesticide concentration in the mineral salt medium. The results of this research indicated that the isolated bacteria can be used for bioremediation of Chlorpyrifos contaminated soil and water ecosystems
