Differential systems associated with tableaux over Lie algebras

We give an account of the construction of exterior differential systems based on the notion of tableaux over Lie algebras as developed in [Comm. Anal. Geom 14 (2006), 475-496; math.DG/0412169]. The definition of a tableau over a Lie algebra is revisited and extended in the light of the formalism of the Spencer cohomology; the question of involutiveness for the associated systems and their prolongations is addressed; examples are discussed.Comment: 16 pages; to appear in: "Symmetries and Overdetermined Systems of Partial Differential Equations" (M. Network representation of electromagnetic fields and forces using generalized bond graphs

We show that it is possible to describe electromagnetic (E-M) fields with a generalized network representation (generalized bond graphs). E-M fields inmoving matter, forces due to E-M fields (Lorentz force, ets.) and field transformations are included in the network description. The relations of these E-M phenomena with respect to each other are clearly represented by the bond graph. We also show that it is not possible to describe E-M phenomena in moving matter with conventional bond graphs, but that a generalized bond graph concept is required.\ud \ud The description of simple E-M devices with conventional bond graphs is based on rather drastic assumptions, i.e. quasi-static conditions (E-M radiation neglected), homogeneous fields, isotropic linear material, etc. These assumptions are not made in this paper

Risk factors for unfavourable postoperative outcome in patients with Crohn's disease undergoing right hemicolectomy or ileocaecal resection An international audit by ESCP and S-ECCO

Background Patient and disease-related factors, as well as operation technique all have the potential to impact on postoperative outcome in Crohn's disease. The available evidence is based on small series and often displays conflicting results. Aim To investigate the effect of pre- and intra-operative risk factors on 30-day postoperative outcome in patients undergoing surgery for Crohn's disease. Method International prospective snapshot audit including consecutive patients undergoing right hemicolectomy or ileocaecal resection. This study analysed a subset of patients who underwent surgery for Crohn's disease. The primary outcome measure was the overall Clavien-Dindo postoperative complication rate. The key secondary outcomes were anastomotic leak, re-operation, surgical site infection and length of stay at hospital. Multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were used to produce odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results Three hundred and seventy five resections in 375 patients were included. The median age was 37 and 57.1% were female. In multivariate analyses, postoperative complications were associated with preoperative parenteral nutrition (OR 2.36 95% CI 1.10-4.97)], urgent/expedited surgical intervention (OR 2.00, 95% CI 1.13-3.55) and unplanned intraoperative adverse events (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.20-4.45). The postoperative length of stay in hospital was prolonged in patients who received preoperative parenteral nutrition (OR 31, CI [1.08-1.61]) and those who had urgent/expedited operations (OR 1.21, CI [1.07-1.37]). Conclusion Preoperative parenteral nutritional support, urgent/expedited operation and unplanned intraoperative adverse events were associated with unfavourable postoperative outcome. Enhanced preoperative optimization and improved planning of operation pathways and timings may improve outcomes for patients

Results on the Colombeau products of the distribution x_+^−r−1/2 with the distributions x_-^−k−1/2 and x_-^k−1/2

Results on the products of the distribution x_+^−r−1/2 with the distributions x_-^−k−1/2 and x_-^k−1/2 are obtained in the differential algebra G(R) of Colombeau generalized functions, which contains the space D'(R) of Schwartz distributions as a subspace; in this algebra the notion of association is defined, which is a faithful generalization of weak equality in G(R). This enables treating the results in terms of distributions again

Towards a splitter theorem for internally 4-connected binary matroids VIII: small matroids

Our splitter theorem for internally 4-connected binary matroids studies pairs of the form (M,N), where N and M are internally 4-connected binary matroids, M has a proper N-minor, and if M' is an internally 4-connected matroid such that M has a proper M'-minor and M' has an N-minor, then |E(M)|-|E(M')|>3. The analysis in the splitter theorem requires the constraint that |E(M)|>15. In this article, we complement that analysis by using an exhaustive computer search to find all such pairs satisfying |E(M)|<16.Comment: Correcting minor error
