Rapid fabrication of 3D terahertz split ring resonator arrays by novel single-shot direct write focused proximity field nanopatterning
For the next generation of phoXonic, plasmonic, optomechanical
and microfluidic devices, the capability to create 3D
microstructures is highly desirable. Fabrication of such structures by
conventional top-down techniques generally requires multiple timeconsuming
steps and is limited in the ability to define features spanning
multiple layers at prescribed angles. 3D direct write lithography (3DDW)
has the capability to draw nearly arbitrary structures, but is an inherently
slow serial writing process. Here we present a method, denoted focused
proximity field nanopatterning (FPnP), that combines 3DDW with single or
multiphoton interference lithography (IL). By exposing a thick photoresist
layer having a phase mask pattern imprinted on its surface with a tightly
focused laser beam, we produce locally unique complex structures. The
morphology can be varied based on beam and mask parameters. Patterns
may be written rapidly in a single shot mode with arbitrary positions
defined by the direct write, thus exploiting the control of 3DDW with the
enhanced speed of phase mask IL. Here we show the ability for this
technique to rapidly produce arrays of âstand-upâ far IR resonators
The Prp19 U-box crystal structure suggests a common dimeric architecture for a class of oligomeric E3 ubiquitin ligases
Prp19 is an essential splicing factor and a member of the U-box family of E3 ubiquitin ligases. Prp19 forms a tetramer via a central coiled-coil domain. Here, we show the U-box domain of Prp19 exists as a dimer within the context of the Prp19 tetramer. A high-resolution structure of the homodimeric state of the Prp19 U-box was determined by X-ray crystallography. Mutation of the U-box dimer interface abrogates U-box dimer formation and is lethal in vivo. The structure of the U-box dimer enables construction of a complete model of Prp19 providing insights into how the tetrameric protein functions as an E3 ligase. Finally, comparison of the Prp19 U-box homodimer with the heterodimeric complex of BRCA1/BARD1 RING-finger domains uncovers a common architecture for a family of oligomeric U-box and RING-finger E3 ubiquitin ligases, which has mechanistic implications for E3 ligase-mediated polyubiquitination and E4 polyubiquitin ligases. © 2006 American Chemical Society
Necrotizing Enterocolitis Associated with Congenital Heart Disease:a Different Entity?
Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) predominantly occurs in preterm infants (PT-NEC). In term neonates, NEC occurs more frequently when a congenital heart disease is present (CHDNEC). Our aim was to evaluate differences and similarities in disease characteristics of PT-NEC versus CHD-NEC.Methods: In this retrospective case-control study we identified all CHD infants who developed NEC Bell's stage >= 2 in our center from 2004 to 2014. We randomly selected (1:2 ratio) PT-NEC infants from the same period. Biochemical and clinical variables were retrieved from patient files.Results: We found 18 CHD-NEC infants and selected 36 PT-NEC infants (gestational age 28.3 [25-35.6] weeks vs. 38.6 [31.7-40.7] weeks). Postnatal age at onset was significantly lower in CHD-NEC patients (4 [2-24] vs. 11 [4-41] days, p <0.001). Lowest pH levels were lower (7.21 [7.01-7.47] vs. 7.27 [6.68-7.39], p = 0.02), and highest CRP levels were higher (112.5 mg/L [5.0-425.0] vs. 66.0 [52-189.0], p = 0.05) in PT-NEC vs. CHD-NEC. Anatomic localisation of the disease differed: the colon was significantly more often involved in CHD-NEC versus PT-NEC (86% vs. 33%, p = 0.03). Mortality caused by NEC was not different (22% vs. 11%, p = 0.47).Conclusion: While outcome of NEC in both groups is similar, the predominant NEC localisation differed between CHD-NEC and PT-NEC patients. This suggests that both variants of the disease have a different underlying pathophysiological mechanism that predisposes different intestinal regions to develop NEC.Type of Study: Retrospective Case-Control Study. Exercise-induced modulation of cardiac lipid content in healthy lean young men
Cardiac lipid accumulation is associated with decreased cardiac function and energy status (PCr/ATP). It has been suggested that elevated plasma fatty acid (FA) concentrations are responsible for the cardiac lipid accumulation. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate if elevating plasma FA concentrations by exercise results in an increased cardiac lipid content, and if this influences cardiac function and energy status. Eleven male subjects (age 25.4 ± 1.1 years, BMI 23.6 ± 0.8 kg/m2) performed a 2-h cycling protocol, once while staying fasted and once while ingesting glucose, to create a state of high versus low plasma FA concentrations, respectively. Cardiac lipid content was measured by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) at baseline, directly after exercise and again 4 h post-exercise, together with systolic function (by multi-slice cine-MRI) and cardiac energy status (by 31P-MRS). Plasma FA concentrations were increased threefold during exercise and ninefold during recovery in the fasted state compared with the glucose-fed state (p < 0.01). Cardiac lipid content was elevated at the end of the fasted test day (from 0.26 ± 0.04 to 0.44 ± 0.04%, p = 0.003), while it did not change with glucose supplementation (from 0.32 ± 0.03 to 0.26 ± 0.05%, p = 0.272). Furthermore, PCr/ATP was decreased by 32% in the high plasma FA state compared with the low FA state (n = 6, p = 0.014). However, in the high FA state, the ejection fraction 4 h post-exercise was higher compared with the low FA state (63 ± 2 vs. 59 ± 2%, p = 0.018). Elevated plasma FA concentrations, induced by exercise in the fasted state, lead to increased cardiac lipid content, but do not acutely hamper systolic function. Although the lower cardiac energy status is in line with a lipotoxic action of cardiac lipid content, a causal relationship cannot be proven
Field-effect transistors assembled from functionalized carbon nanotubes
We have fabricated field effect transistors from carbon nanotubes using a
novel selective placement scheme. We use carbon nanotubes that are covalently
bound to molecules containing hydroxamic acid functionality. The functionalized
nanotubes bind strongly to basic metal oxide surfaces, but not to silicon
dioxide. Upon annealing, the functionalization is removed, restoring the
electronic properties of the nanotubes. The devices we have fabricated show
excellent electrical characteristics.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Effects of training and albuterol on pain and fatigue in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy

51802.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)BACKGROUND : We recently reported a randomised controlled trial on the efficacy of strength training and the beta2-adrenergic agonist albuterol in patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Strength training and albuterol appeared safe interventions with limited positive effect on muscle strength and volume. We concurrently explored the prevalence and the characteristics of pain and fatigue in the participating FSHD patients, because these are probably underreported but clinically relevant symptoms in this disorder. Next, we studied the effects of albuterol and strength training on pain, experienced fatigue, health-related functional status and psychological distress. METHODS : Sixty-five patients were randomised to strength training of elbow flexors and ankle dorsiflexors or non-training. After 26 weeks, albuterol (sustained-release, 8 mg bid) was added in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Outcomes comprised self-reported pain, experienced fatigue, functional status and psychological distress obtained with validated questionnaires at 52 weeks. RESULTS : Eighty percent of patients reported chronic persistent or periodic, multifocal pains. Thirty-four percent of the participants were severely fatigued. Strength training and albuterol failed to have a significant effect on all outcomes. CONCLUSIONS : Pain and fatigue are important features in FSHD. Strength training and albuterol do not have a positive or negative effect on pain, experienced fatigue, functional status and psychological distress
The Surgical Infection Society revised guidelines on the management of intra-abdominal infection
Background: Previous evidence-based guidelines on the management of intra-abdominal infection (IAI) were published by the Surgical Infection Society (SIS) in 1992, 2002, and 2010. At the time the most recent guideline was released, the plan was to update the guideline every five years to ensure the timeliness and appropriateness of the recommendations.
Methods: Based on the previous guidelines, the task force outlined a number of topics related to the treatment of patients with IAI and then developed key questions on these various topics. All questions were approached using general and specific literature searches, focusing on articles and other information published since 2008. These publications and additional materials published before 2008 were reviewed by the task force as a whole or by individual subgroups as to relevance to individual questions. Recommendations were developed by a process of iterative consensus, with all task force members voting to accept or reject each recommendation. Grading was based on the GRADE (Grades of Recommendation Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) system; the quality of the evidence was graded as high, moderate, or weak, and the strength of the recommendation was graded as strong or weak. Review of the document was performed by members of the SIS who were not on the task force. After responses were made to all critiques, the document was approved as an official guideline of the SIS by the Executive Council.
Results: This guideline summarizes the current recommendations developed by the task force on the treatment of patients who have IAI. Evidence-based recommendations have been made regarding risk assessment in individual patients; source control; the timing, selection, and duration of antimicrobial therapy; and suggested approaches to patients who fail initial therapy. Additional recommendations related to the treatment of pediatric patients with IAI have been included.

Faeces as a novel material to estimate lyssavirus prevalence in bat populations
Rabies is caused by infection with a lyssavirus. Bat rabies is of concern for both public health and bat conservation. The current method for lyssavirus prevalence studies in bat populations is by oral swabbing, which is invasive for the bats, dangerous for handlers, time-consuming and expensive. In many situations, such sampling is not feasible, and hence, our understanding of epidemiology of bat rabies is limited. Faeces are usually easy to collect from bat colonies without disturbing the bats and thus could be a practical and feasible material for lyssavirus prevalence studies. To further explore this idea, we performed virological analysis on faecal pellets and oral swabs of seven serotine bats (Eptesicus serotinus) that were positive for European bat 1 lyssavirus in the brain. We also performed immunohistochemical and virological analyses on digestive tract samples of these bats to determine potential sources of lyssavirus in the faeces. We found that lyssavirus detection by RT-qPCR was nearly as sensitive in faecal pellets (6/7 bats positive, 86%) as in oral swabs (7/7 bats positive, 100%). The likely source of lyssavirus in the faeces was virus excreted into the oral cavity from the salivary glands (5/6 bats positive by immunohistochemistry and RT-qPCR) or tongue (3/4 bats positive by immunohistochemistry) and swallowed with saliva. Virus could not be isolated from any of the seven faecal pellets, suggesting the lyssavirus detected in faeces is not infectious. Lyssavirus detection in the majority of faecal pellets of infected bats shows that this novel material should be further explored for lyssavirus prevalence studies in bats
Interpreting an action from what we perceive and what we expect
International audienceIn update logic as studied by Baltag, Moss, Solecki and van Benthem, little attention is paid to the interpretation of an action by an agent, which is just assumed to depend on the situation. This is actually a complex issue that nevertheless complies to some logical dynamics. In this paper, we tackle this topic. We also deal with actions that change propositional facts of the situation. In parallel, we propose a formalism to accurately represent an agent's epistemic state based on hyperreal numbers. In that respect, we use infinitesimals to express what would surprise the agents (and by how much) by contradicting their beliefs. We also use a subjective probability to model the notion of belief. It turns out that our probabilistic update mechanism satisfies the AGM postulates of belief revision
