    Impact of extreme weather on healthcare utilization by people with hiv in metropolitan miami

    Extreme weather events (EWE) are expected to increase as climate change intensifies, leaving coastal regions exposed to higher risks. South Florida has the highest HIV infection rate in the United States, and disruptions in clinic utilization due to extreme weather conditions could affect adherence to treatment and increase community transmission. The objective of this study was to identify the association between EWE and HIV-clinic attendance rates at a large academic medical system serving the Miami-Dade communities. The following methods were utilized: (1) Extreme heat index (EHI) and extreme precipitation (EP) were identified using daily observations from 1990–2019 that were collected at the Miami International Airport weather station located 3.6 miles from the studied HIV clinics. Data on hurricanes, coastal storms and flooding were collected from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Storms Database (NOAA) for Miami-Dade County. (2) An all-HIV clinic registry identified scheduled daily visits during the study period (hurricane seasons from 2017–2019). (3) Daily weather data were linked to the all-HIV clinic registry, where patients’ ‘no-show’ status was the variable of interest. (4) A time-stratified, case crossover model was used to estimate the relative risk of no-show on days with a high heat index, precipitation, and/or an extreme natural event. A total of 26,444 scheduled visits were analyzed during the 383-day study period. A steady increase in the relative risk of ‘no-show’ was observed in successive categories, with a 14% increase observed on days when the heat index was extreme compared to days with a relatively low EHI, 13% on days with EP compared to days with no EP, and 10% higher on days with a reported extreme weather event compared to days without such incident. This study represents a novel approach to improving local understanding of the impacts of EWE on the HIV-population’s utilization of healthcare, particularly when the frequency and intensity of EWE is expected to increase and disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. More studies are needed to understand the impact of EWE on routine outpatient settings

    Comparison of gene expression of metallothioneins, ubiquitin and p53 in fibroblasts from lung and skin of rats of different age

    We studied gene expression of five metallothioneins (MT 1-5), ubiquitin and protein p53 and their products in fibroblasts culture of the skin and lungs of white rats of different ages (2 weeks, 1, 3, and 24 months) and determined its (metallothionein 1-5 types, ubiquitin, p53) product quantity. All these proteins are protective ones, but perform their functions by using different mechanisms. Metallothionein bind, transport and excrete ions of bivalent metals, ubiquitin controls the cleavage of the defective and short-lived proteins in the proteasome, protein p53 controls apoptosis, thus ensuring the genome stability. The similarity of age dynamics of gene expression of ubiquitin and MT of cells of both sources has been shown – maximum at 3 months. Expression of p53 gene has a difference: both in the skin and lungs expression increases up to 24 months. Product quantity of p53 has a minimum in the skin at 3 months and remains constant; in the lungs, this value has a maximum at 1 month

    Chaos induced coherence in two independent food chains

    Coherence evolution of two food web models can be obtained under the stirring effect of chaotic advection. Each food web model sustains a three--level trophic system composed of interacting predators, consumers and vegetation. These populations compete for a common limiting resource in open flows with chaotic advection dynamics. Here we show that two species (the top--predators) of different colonies chaotically advected by a jet--like flow can synchronize their evolution even without migration interaction. The evolution is charaterized as a phase synchronization. The phase differences (determined through the Hilbert transform) of the variables representing those species show a coherent evolution.Comment: 5 pages, 5 eps figures.     Analysis of automated control traffic system application in the Republic of Belarus is given in the paper. A conception is formulated for modernization of automated systems. The conception presupposes to increase a traffic efficiency and its safety. The paper provides a classification of existing automat^ control traffic systems and the systems that are in stage of development and introduction. The proposed classification permits to structurize control methods and algorithms for every system and prepare a list of technical means for systems of various level. Prospective directions of automated control traffic system development in the republic of Belarus are determined in the paper.Приводится анализ применения автоматизированных систем управления дорожным движением (АСУ ДЦ) в Республике Беларусь. Сформирована концепция совершенствования автоматизированных систем, направленная на повышение эффективности дорожного движения и его безопасности. Предложена классификация существующих АСУ ДД и систем, находящихся в стадии разработки и внедрения. Приведенная классификация позволяет структурировать методы и алгоритмы управления индивидуально для каждой системы, а также сформировать перечень технических средств для систем различного уровня. Определены перспективные направления развития АСУ ДД в Республике Беларусь

    Morphological disturbances of rat parietal cortex and hippocampus neurons in the dynamics steady subtotal ischemia of the brain

    The purpose of the work is to analyze changes in the morphological characteristics of neurons of phylogenetical different parts of the cerebral cortex (parietal cortex and hippocampus) of rats at different periods in the dynamics of stepwise subtotal experimental cerebral ischemia. Methods. The experiments were performed on 42 males of outbred white rats. Step subtotal cerebral ischemia was performed as follows: first, one common carotid artery was ligated, simulating partial ischemia. Then, with an interval of 1 day (subgroup 1), 3 days (subgroup 2) or 7 days (subgroup 3), the second common carotid artery was ligated. Results. A microscopic study of the size, shape, degree of chromatophilia of the cytoplasm and the content of ribonucleoproteins in pyramidal neurons of phylogenetically different parts of the cerebral cortex have shown the dependence of the severity of brain damage on the interval between the cessation of blood flow in both carotid artery. Adaptation was better with a 7-day interval between dressings, while the ligation with an interval of 1 day, the degree of morphological changes was maximum indicating a lack of resources for the implementation of adaptation mechanisms

    The paper proposes a modified model for estimation of potential danger and its further application for an accident in question under interaction of pedestrian and turning transport flows.     Experimental study of square and rectangular hollow section aluminium alloy columns

    Recently, aluminium alloys are extensively used in the construction sector because of their small self-weight, good corrosion resistance, low maintenance, high recyclability, and aesthetic appearance. However, one of the main disadvantages of these alloys is the low Young's modulus, which may cause a stability issue of aluminium structural members. Moreover, currently available design standards for predicting buckling resistance of aluminium columns are generally conservative. Therefore, additional research is required to evaluate the actual structural behaviour of aluminium columns under axial compression. The present study experimentally investigated the buckling response of 13 square and rectangular 6082-T6 aluminium alloy columns subjected to axial compression. The properties of the aluminium alloy were achieved from tensile test of coupon samples. The compressive load was employed concentrically by using a knife-edge hinge to ensure pin supports on both ends of the specimens. The structural response of the columns observed from the tests is presented in terms of ultimate strengths, failure modes and load-mid-height lateral displacement relationship. Furthermore, the test results of the specimens are compared with the ultimate strengths calculated by Eurocode 9, showing that the latter provides conservative and scattered design estimations
