Revised Coordinates and Proper Motions of the Stars in the Luyten Half-Second Catalogue

    Get PDF
We present refined coordinates and proper motion data for the high proper motion (HPM) stars in the Luyten Half-Second (LHS) catalogue. The positional uncertainty in the original Luyten catalogue is typically >10" and is often >30". We have used the digital scans of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS) I and POSS II plates to derive more accurate positions and proper motions of the objects. Out of the 4470 candidates in the LHS catalogue, 4323 objects were manually re-identified in the POSS I and POSS II scans. A small fraction of the stars were not found due to the lack of finder charts and digitized POSS II scans. The uncertainties in the revised positions are typically ~2", but can be as high as ~8" in a few cases; this is a large improvement over the original data. Cross-correlation with the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos catalogues yielded 819 candidates (with m_R < 12). For these brighter sources, the position and proper motion data have been replaced with the more accurate Tycho/Hipparcos data. In total, we have revised proper motion measurements and coordinates for 4040 stars and revised coordinates for 4330 stars, which are presented here.Comment: 108 pages. Accepted for Publication in ApJ Suppl. Some errors caused by the transcription errors in the original LHS catalogue have been corrected in this resubmission. The most current version of the catalogue is also available online at http://www.stsci.edu/~ksahu/lh

Edible films and coatings based on agrifood residues: A new trend in the food packaging research

    Get PDF
Food packaging trends have been changing in the last years, mainly due to consumer concerns about plastic pollution and agrifood waste. Recent advances in the development of edible films and coatings are discussed. These systems can be much more than packaging, with additional functions such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and nutritional properties, among others. Challenges in industrial processes and/or in some films’ properties are addressed from the authors’ point of view. The use of agrifood residues in these packaging systems is included as a promising strategy that promotes sustainability and circular economy. The authors consider that more research and actions are needed to achieve the best packaging material for each food product with reduced production costs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Effects of Temperature on the Toxicity to the Aquatic Biota of Waste Discharges - A Compilation of the Literature

    Get PDF
An extensive compiliation and general evaluation of the literature is presented which describes the temperature interaction with toxicity. Recent literature is summarized and made accessible along with a few generalized relationships such that researchers may design studies in a manner that will increase the utility of their results. A detailed indexing system is employed which makes the information contained in the report accessible by author, toxicant, and text organism. Summary tables of the most pertinent literature are also presented for easy subject retrieval. It was concluded that very little uniformity in experimental design is found between experiments on temperature-toxicity relationships, and a generalized summary of the results presented in th eliterature is essentially impossible because of the inconsistencies in experimental designs. The utilization of standard bioassay procedures is highly recommened, and these procedures should be applied to experimental designs which allow the estimation of parameters related to the theoretical effects of temperature

M. C. Gaspar acknowledges FCT for the financial support through the Scientific Employment Stimulus – Individual and Institutional Calls (CEECIND/00527/2017 and CEECINST/00060/2021). The authors participate in the CYTED network RESALVALOR — Valorización de Residuos de la Industria Agroalimentaria. The authors are also grateful for the work of the designer José Gomes in the preparation of Figures 1 and 2.Supercritical fluid technology has been applied in the food area for processing and preserving food products and/or monitoring the food quality, with known advantages. The main solvent used at supercritical conditions for food applications is carbon dioxide. Some examples are presented, from the traditional decaffeination of coffee up to the micronization of vanilla, passing through innovative processes such as the extrusion of protein-based snacks and drying of beetroot. The gap between research and industries is addressed, mainly due to a lack of data about food chemical changes that may occur during some processes, as well as technical data. However, this is an area in clear expansion and probably, in the future, we will have a menu composed of meals prepared by supercritical methods.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Survival estimates of bycatch individuals discarded from bivalve dredges

The fate of released bycatch is an issue of great interest for fisheries research and management. Survival experiments were carried out to assess the survival capacity of animals damaged and discarded during clam dredging operations. Three common bycatch species, two fish (Trachinus vipera; Dicologlossa cuneata) and one crab (Polybius henslowii), were collected during the sorting of catches from a commercial dredging boat. An arbitrary score scale was used to quantify the type and extent of damage to the organisms. Onboard, damaged individuals were placed in tanks containing seawater which were subsequently transferred to the laboratory. Survival experiments were conducted during the subsequent 48h. D. cuneata exhibited the lowest mortality after 48h (54%), followed by P. henslowii (65%) and T. vipera (81%). Despite the magnitude of the percentage mortalities determined, the average number of individuals estimated to die during a 15 minutes tow (standard commercial fishing time) was relatively small: 1.2, 3.24 and 11 for D. cuneata, T. vipera and P. henslowii, respectively. Nevertheless, when these figures are extrapolated to cover all the dredging fleet the impact of this practice on the populations of the species studied can be significant, particulary for D. cuneata

Mozambique's Future: Modeling Population and Sustainable Development Challenges

    Get PDF
What are the prospects for sustainable development over the next 20 years in Mozambique? Although it looks as if much of the development prospects are determined by such inherently unpredictable events as war, peace, and weather calamities, there are also many changes and patterns which have a long-term stability and which change only slowly over time. For example, socio-demographic changes, such as labor force skills, and population health have a long momentum. These are very important indicators for the economic development potential of a country. Also, although it is impossible to predict a particular year of heavy rains or droughts, there are long time series of weather from which we can calculate the country's vulnerability to single- or multiple-year weather disasters. To focus our efforts in answering this bold question, we concentrate on four issues: (1) Can poverty be erased in the next 20 years? (2) How will school enrollment lead to higher skills in the labor force by 2020? (3) What role will water play in development, in particular, water provision by rain to rural areas, and infrastructure to cities? (4) And, most importantly, what will be the impacts of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the next decades

ABSTRACTCombined chemotherapy and radiotherapy has shown to be the correct treatment of unresectable non-small cell lung cancer, aier many years of poor survival figures with standard radiotherapy alone. It has also been demonstrated that the benefit of chemotherapy is mainly achieved if cisplatin-based schedules are used. The authors present a retrospective study of 100 cases of stage III non-small cell lung cancer treated with a sequential approach of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and evaluate median and overall survival, local progression-free survival and distant progression-free survival. The results of our series are quite similar to those published in literature.REV PORT PNEUMOL 2003; IX (3): 215-22
