Finite sum of gluon ladders and high energy cross sections
A model for the Pomeron at is suggested. It is based on the idea of a
finite sum of ladder diagrams in QCD. Accordingly, the number of -channel
gluon rungs and correspondingly the powers of logarithms in the forward
scattering amplitude depends on the phase space (energy) available, i.e. as
energy increases, progressively new prongs with additional gluon rungs in the
-channel open. Explicit expressions for the total cross section involving
two and three rungs or, alternatively, three and four prongs (with
and as highest terms, respectively) are fitted to the proton-proton
and proton-antiproton total cross section data in the accelerator region. Both
QCD calculation and fits to the data indicate fast convergence of the series.
In the fit, two terms (a constant and a logarithmically rising one) almost
saturate the whole series, the term being small and the next one,
, negligible. Theoretical predictions for the photon-photon total
cross section are also given.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 2 EPS figures, uses axodraw.st
Possible probe of the QCD odderon singularity through the quasidiffractive eta_c production in gamma-gamma collisions
The reactions gamma-gamma to eta_c eta_c and gamma gamma to eta_c + X are
discussed within the three gluon exchange model. We give predictions for the
differential cross-sections and discuss feasibility of measuring these
processes at LEP2 and TESLA. The total cross-sections were estimated to be
approximately equal to 40 fb and 120 fb for gamma-gamma to eta_c eta_c and
gamma-gamma to eta_c + X respectively assuming exchange of elementary gluons
that corresponds to the odderon with intercept equal to unity. These values can
be enhanced by a factor equal to 1.9 and 2.1 for LEP2 and TESLA energies if the
odderon intercept is equal to 1.07. The estimate of cross-sections sigma(e^+
e^- to e^+ e^- eta_c eta_c) and sigma (e^+ e^- to e^+ e^- eta_c + X) for
untagged e^+ and e^- is also given.Comment: 11 pages, Latex, epsf, 5 eps figures include
P-P Total Cross Sections at VHE from Accelerator Data
Comparison of P-P total cross-sections estimations at very high energies -
from accelerators and cosmic rays - shows a disagreement amounting to more than
10 %, a discrepancy which is beyond statistical errors. Here we use a
phenomenological model based on the Multiple-Diffraction approach to
successfully describe data at accelerator energies. The predictions of the
model are compared with data On the basis of regression analysis we determine
confident error bands, analyzing the sensitivity of our predictions to the
employed data for extrapolation. : using data at 546 and 1.8 TeV, our
extrapolations for p-p total cross-sections are only compatible with the Akeno
cosmic ray data, predicting a slower rise with energy than other cosmic ray
results and other extrapolation methods. We discuss our results within the
context of constraints in the light of future accelerator and cosmic ray
experimental results.Comment: 26 pages aqnd 11 figure
Odd C-P contributions to diffractive processes
We investigate contributions to diffractive scattering, which are odd under
C- and P-parity. Comparison of p- and p-p scattering indicates that
these odderon contributions are very small and we show how a diquark clustering
in the proton can explain this effect. A good probe for the odderon exchange is
the photo- and electroproduction of pseudo-scalar mesons. We concentrate on the
pi^0 and show that the quasi elastic pi^0-production is again strongly
suppressed for a diquark structure of the proton whereas the cross sections for
diffractive proton dissociation are larger by orders of magnitude and rather
independent of the proton structure.Comment: 18 pages, LaTex2e, graphicx package, 14 eps figures include
The camera of the fifth H.E.S.S. telescope. Part I: System description
In July 2012, as the four ground-based gamma-ray telescopes of the H.E.S.S.
(High Energy Stereoscopic System) array reached their tenth year of operation
in Khomas Highlands, Namibia, a fifth telescope took its first data as part of
the system. This new Cherenkov detector, comprising a 614.5 m^2 reflector with
a highly pixelized camera in its focal plane, improves the sensitivity of the
current array by a factor two and extends its energy domain down to a few tens
of GeV.
The present part I of the paper gives a detailed description of the fifth
H.E.S.S. telescope's camera, presenting the details of both the hardware and
the software, emphasizing the main improvements as compared to previous
H.E.S.S. camera technology.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in NIM
The spin dependence of high energy proton scattering
Motivated by the need for an absolute polarimeter to determine the beam
polarization for the forthcoming RHIC spin program, we study the spin
dependence of the proton-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at high energy
and small momentum transfer. We examine experimental evidence for the existence
of an asymptotic part of the helicity-flip amplitude phi_5 which is not
negligible relative to the largely imaginary average non-flip amplitude phi_+.
We discuss theoretical estimates of r_5, essentially the ratio of phi_5 to
phi_+, based upon extrapolation of low and medium energy Regge phenomenological
results to high energies, models based on a hybrid of perturbative QCD and
non-relativistic quark models, and models based on eikonalization techniques.
We also apply the model-independent methods of analyticity and unitarity. The
preponderence of evidence at available energy indicates that r_5 is small,
probably less than 10%. The best available experimental limit comes from
Fermilab E704:those data indicate that |r_5|<15%. These bounds are important
because rigorous methods allow much larger values. In contradiction to a
widely-held prejudice that r_5 decreases with energy, general principles allow
it to grow as fast as ln(s) asymptotically, and some models show an even faster
growth in the RHIC range. One needs a more precise measurement of r_5 or to
bound it to be smaller than 5% in order to use the classical Coulomb-nuclear
interference technique for RHIC polarimetry. As part of this study, we
demonstrate the surprising result that proton-proton elastic scattering is
self-analysing, in the sense that all the helicity amplitudes can, in
principle, be determined experimentally at small momentum transfer without a
knowledge of the magnitude of the beam and target polarization
Determination of the pion-nucleon coupling constant and scattering lengths
We critically evaluate the isovector GMO sum rule for forward pion-nucleon
scattering using the recent precision measurements of negatively charged
pion-proton and pion-deuteron scattering lengths from pionic atoms. We deduce
the charged-pion-nucleon coupling constant, with careful attention to
systematic and statistical uncertainties. This determination gives, directly
from data a pseudoscalar coupling constant of
14.11+-0.05(statistical)+-0.19(systematic) or a pseudovector one of 0.0783(11).
This value is intermediate between that of indirect methods and the direct
determination from backward neutron-proton differential scattering cross
sections. We also use the pionic atom data to deduce the coherent symmetric and
antisymmetric sums of the negatively charged pion-proton and pion-neutron
scattering lengths with high precision. The symmetric sum gives
0.0012+-0.0002(statistical)+-0.0008 (systematic) and the antisymmetric one
0.0895+-0.0003(statistical)+-0.0013(systematic), both in units of inverse
charged pion-mass. For the need of the present analysis, we improve the
theoretical description of the pion-deuteron scattering length.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. C, few modifications and

A Unified Model of Exclusive , and \jpsi Electroproduction
A two-component model is developed for diffractive electroproduction of
, and \jpsi, based on non-perturbative and perturbative
two-gluon exchange. This provides a common kinematical structure for
non-perturbative and perturbative effects, and allows the role of the
vector-meson vertex functions to be explored independently of the production
dynamics. A good global description of the vector-meson data is obtained.Comment: 30 pages, 35 figure
Analytic models and forward scattering from accelerator to cosmic-ray energies
Analytic models for hadron-hadron scattering are characterized by analytical
parametrizations for the forward amplitudes and the use of dispersion relation
techniques to study the total cross section and the
parameter. In this paper we investigate four aspects related to the application
of the model to and scattering, from accelerator to cosmic-ray
energies: 1) the effect of different estimations for from
cosmic-ray experiments; 2) the differences between individual and global
(simultaneous) fits to and ; 3) the role of the
subtraction constant in the dispersion relations; 4) the effect of distinct
asymptotic inputs from different analytic models. This is done by using as a
framework the single Pomeron and the maximal Odderon parametrizations for the
total cross section. Our main conclusions are the following: 1) Despite the
small influence from different cosmic-ray estimations, the results allow us to
extract an upper bound for the soft pomeron intercept: ;
2) although global fits present good statistical results, in general, this
procedure constrains the rise of ; 3) the subtraction constant as
a free parameter affects the fit results at both low and high energies; 4)
independently of the cosmic-ray information used and the subtraction constant,
global fits with the odderon parametrization predict that, above GeV, becomes greater than , and
this result is in complete agreement with all the data presently available. In
particular, we infer at GeV and
at 500 GeV (BNL RHIC energies).Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, aps-revtex, wording changes, corrected typos, to

Work supported by the French Agence Nationale de la recherche as part of the program EQUIPEX under reference ANR-10-EQPX-51, the Ile de France region, CNRS-IN2P3 and Université Paris Sud XI - http://accelconf.web.cern.ch/AccelConf/IPAC2014/papers/wepro052.pdfA collaboration of seven research institutes and an industry has been set up for the ThomX project, a compact Compton Backscattering Source (CBS) based in Orsay - France. After a period of study and definition of the machine performance, a full description of all the systems has been provided. The infrastructure work has been started and the main systems are in the call for tender phase. In this paper we will illustrate the definitive machine parameters and components characteristics. We will also update the results of the different technical and experimental activities on optical resonators, RF power supplies and on the electron gun
