Families with infants: a general approach to solve hard partition problems
We introduce a general approach for solving partition problems where the goal
is to represent a given set as a union (either disjoint or not) of subsets
satisfying certain properties. Many NP-hard problems can be naturally stated as
such partition problems. We show that if one can find a large enough system of
so-called families with infants for a given problem, then this problem can be
solved faster than by a straightforward algorithm. We use this approach to
improve known bounds for several NP-hard problems as well as to simplify the
proofs of several known results.
For the chromatic number problem we present an algorithm with
time and exponential space for graphs of average
degree . This improves the algorithm by Bj\"{o}rklund et al. [Theory Comput.
Syst. 2010] that works for graphs of bounded maximum (as opposed to average)
degree and closes an open problem stated by Cygan and Pilipczuk [ICALP 2013].
For the traveling salesman problem we give an algorithm working in
time and polynomial space for graphs of average
degree . The previously known results of this kind is a polyspace algorithm
by Bj\"{o}rklund et al. [ICALP 2008] for graphs of bounded maximum degree and
an exponential space algorithm for bounded average degree by Cygan and
Pilipczuk [ICALP 2013].
For counting perfect matching in graphs of average degree~ we present an
algorithm with running time and polynomial
space. Recent algorithms of this kind due to Cygan, Pilipczuk [ICALP 2013] and

Assigning channels via the meet-in-the-middle approach
We study the complexity of the Channel Assignment problem. By applying the
meet-in-the-middle approach we get an algorithm for the -bounded Channel
Assignment (when the edge weights are bounded by ) running in time
. This is the first algorithm which breaks the
barrier. We extend this algorithm to the counting variant, at the
cost of slightly higher polynomial factor.
A major open problem asks whether Channel Assignment admits a -time
algorithm, for a constant independent of . We consider a similar
question for Generalized T-Coloring, a CSP problem that generalizes \CA. We
show that Generalized T-Coloring does not admit a
-time algorithm, where is the

Polynomial Kernelization for Removing Induced Claws and Diamonds
A graph is called (claw,diamond)-free if it contains neither a claw (a ) nor a diamond (a with an edge removed) as an induced subgraph. Equivalently, (claw,diamond)-free graphs can be characterized as line graphs of triangle-free graphs, or as linear dominoes, i.e., graphs in which every vertex is in at most two maximal cliques and every edge is in exactly one maximal clique. In this paper we consider the parameterized complexity of the (claw,diamond)-free Edge Deletion problem, where given a graph and a parameter , the question is whether one can remove at most edges from to obtain a (claw,diamond)-free graph. Our main result is that this problem admits a polynomial kernel. We complement this finding by proving that, even on instances with maximum degree , the problem is NP-complete and cannot be solved in time unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis fai
CSNE: Conditional Signed Network Embedding
Signed networks are mathematical structures that encode positive and negative
relations between entities such as friend/foe or trust/distrust. Recently,
several papers studied the construction of useful low-dimensional
representations (embeddings) of these networks for the prediction of missing
relations or signs. Existing embedding methods for sign prediction generally
enforce different notions of status or balance theories in their optimization
function. These theories, however, are often inaccurate or incomplete, which
negatively impacts method performance.
In this context, we introduce conditional signed network embedding (CSNE).
Our probabilistic approach models structural information about the signs in the
network separately from fine-grained detail. Structural information is
represented in the form of a prior, while the embedding itself is used for
capturing fine-grained information. These components are then integrated in a
rigorous manner. CSNE's accuracy depends on the existence of sufficiently
powerful structural priors for modelling signed networks, currently unavailable
in the literature. Thus, as a second main contribution, which we find to be
highly valuable in its own right, we also introduce a novel approach to
construct priors based on the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) principle. These priors
can model the \emph{polarity} of nodes (degree to which their links are
positive) as well as signed \emph{triangle counts} (a measure of the degree
structural balance holds to in a network).
Experiments on a variety of real-world networks confirm that CSNE outperforms
the state-of-the-art on the task of sign prediction. Moreover, the MaxEnt
priors on their own, while less accurate than full CSNE, achieve accuracies
competitive with the state-of-the-art at very limited computational cost, thus
providing an excellent runtime-accuracy trade-off in resource-constrained
situations
Parameterized complexity of the MINCCA problem on graphs of bounded decomposability
In an edge-colored graph, the cost incurred at a vertex on a path when two
incident edges with different colors are traversed is called reload or
changeover cost. The "Minimum Changeover Cost Arborescence" (MINCCA) problem
consists in finding an arborescence with a given root vertex such that the
total changeover cost of the internal vertices is minimized. It has been
recently proved by G\"oz\"upek et al. [TCS 2016] that the problem is FPT when
parameterized by the treewidth and the maximum degree of the input graph. In
this article we present the following results for the MINCCA problem:
- the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by the treedepth of the input graph,
even on graphs of average degree at most 8. In particular, it is W[1]-hard
parameterized by the treewidth of the input graph, which answers the main open
problem of G\"oz\"upek et al. [TCS 2016];
- it is W[1]-hard on multigraphs parameterized by the tree-cutwidth of the
input multigraph;
- it is FPT parameterized by the star tree-cutwidth of the input graph, which
is a slightly restricted version of tree-cutwidth. This result strictly
generalizes the FPT result given in G\"oz\"upek et al. [TCS 2016];
- it remains NP-hard on planar graphs even when restricted to instances with
at most 6 colors and 0/1 symmetric costs, or when restricted to instances with
at most 8 colors, maximum degree bounded by 4, and 0/1 symmetric costs.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure
The Power of Cut-Based Parameters for Computing Edge Disjoint Paths
This paper revisits the classical Edge Disjoint Paths (EDP) problem, where one is given an undirected graph G and a set of terminal pairs P and asks whether G contains a set of pairwise edge-disjoint paths connecting every terminal pair in P. Our aim is to identify structural properties (parameters) of graphs which allow the efficient solution of EDP without restricting the placement of terminals in P in any way. In this setting, EDP is known to remain NP-hard even on extremely restricted graph classes, such as graphs with a vertex cover of size 3.
We present three results which use edge-separator based parameters to chart new islands of tractability in the complexity landscape of EDP. Our first and main result utilizes the fairly recent structural parameter treecut width (a parameter with fundamental ties to graph immersions and graph cuts): we obtain a polynomial-time algorithm for EDP on every graph class of bounded treecut width. Our second result shows that EDP parameterized by treecut width is unlikely to be fixed-parameter tractable. Our final, third result is a polynomial kernel for EDP parameterized by the size of a minimum feedback edge set in the graph
Fibre-optic delivery of time and frequency to VLBI station
The quality of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) radio observations
predominantly relies on precise and ultra-stable time and frequency (T&F)
standards, usually hydrogen masers (HM), maintained locally at each VLBI
station. Here, we present an operational solution in which the VLBI
observations are routinely carried out without use of a local HM, but using
remote synchronization via a stabilized, long-distance fibre-optic link. The
T&F reference signals, traceable to international atomic timescale (TAI), are
delivered to the VLBI station from a dedicated timekeeping laboratory.
Moreover, we describe a proof-of-concept experiment where the VLBI station is
synchronized to a remote strontium optical lattice clock during the

Beyond Outerplanarity
We study straight-line drawings of graphs where the vertices are placed in
convex position in the plane, i.e., convex drawings. We consider two families
of graph classes with nice convex drawings: outer -planar graphs, where each
edge is crossed by at most other edges; and, outer -quasi-planar graphs
where no edges can mutually cross. We show that the outer -planar graphs
are -degenerate, and consequently that every
outer -planar graph can be -colored, and this
bound is tight. We further show that every outer -planar graph has a
balanced separator of size . This implies that every outer -planar
graph has treewidth . For fixed , these small balanced separators
allow us to obtain a simple quasi-polynomial time algorithm to test whether a
given graph is outer -planar, i.e., none of these recognition problems are
NP-complete unless ETH fails. For the outer -quasi-planar graphs we prove
that, unlike other beyond-planar graph classes, every edge-maximal -vertex
outer -quasi planar graph has the same number of edges, namely . We also construct planar 3-trees that are not outer
-quasi-planar. Finally, we restrict outer -planar and outer
-quasi-planar drawings to \emph{closed} drawings, where the vertex sequence
on the boundary is a cycle in the graph. For each , we express closed outer
-planarity and \emph{closed outer -quasi-planarity} in extended monadic
second-order logic. Thus, closed outer -planarity is linear-time testable by

Parametrised Complexity of Model Checking and Satisfiability in Propositional Dependence Logic
In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of the parametrised complexity
in the field of Dependence Logics which finds its origin in the Dependence
Logic of V\"a\"an\"anen from 2007. We study a propositional variant of this
logic (PDL) and investigate a variety of parametrisations with respect to the
central decision problems. The model checking problem (MC) of PDL is
NP-complete. The subject of this research is to identify a list of
parametrisations (formula-size, treewidth, treedepth, team-size, number of
variables) under which MC becomes fixed-parameter tractable. Furthermore, we
show that the number of disjunctions or the arity of dependence atoms
(dep-arity) as a parameter both yield a paraNP-completeness result. Then, we
consider the satisfiability problem (SAT) showing a different picture: under
team-size, or dep-arity SAT is paraNP-complete whereas under all other
mentioned parameters the problem is in FPT. Finally, we introduce a variant of
the satisfiability problem, asking for teams of a given size, and show for this
