    Quadratic invariants for discrete clusters of weakly interacting waves

    We consider discrete clusters of quasi-resonant triads arising from a Hamiltonian three-wave equation. A cluster consists of N modes forming a total of M connected triads. We investigate the problem of constructing a functionally independent set of quadratic constants of motion. We show that this problem is equivalent to an underlying basic linear problem, consisting of finding the null space of a rectangular M × N matrix with entries 1, −1 and 0. In particular, we prove that the number of independent quadratic invariants is equal to J ≡ N − M* ≄ N − M, where M* is the number of linearly independent rows in Thus, the problem of finding all independent quadratic invariants is reduced to a linear algebra problem in the Hamiltonian case. We establish that the properties of the quadratic invariants (e.g., locality) are related to the topological properties of the clusters (e.g., types of linkage). To do so, we formulate an algorithm for decomposing large clusters into smaller ones and show how various invariants are related to certain parts of a cluster, including the basic structures leading to M* < M. We illustrate our findings by presenting examples from the Charney–Hasegawa–Mima wave model, and by showing a classification of small (up to three-triad) clusters

    Characterizing and Improving the Reliability of Broadband Internet Access

    In this paper, we empirically demonstrate the growing importance of reliability by measuring its effect on user behavior. We present an approach for broadband reliability characterization using data collected by many emerging national initiatives to study broadband and apply it to the data gathered by the Federal Communications Commission's Measuring Broadband America project. Motivated by our findings, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a practical approach for improving the reliability of broadband Internet access with multihoming.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, 6 table

    Porzana spiloptera, the Dot-wing Crake, has a patchy distribution in southern South America and has previously been considered as inhabiting exclusively lowland wetlands. Here we present evidence of a new population inhabiting a high-elevation site in the Central Andes of Argentina. This record suggests not only a broader distribution but greater tolerance of the species to higher elevation and lower temperatures than has previously been assumed.Fil: Zarco, Agustín.     Bayesian estimates of free energies from nonequilibrium work data in the presence of instrument noise

    The Jarzynski equality and the fluctuation theorem relate equilibrium free energy differences to non-equilibrium measurements of the work. These relations extend to single-molecule experiments that have probed the finite-time thermodynamics of proteins and nucleic acids. The effects of experimental error and instrument noise have not previously been considered. Here, we present a Bayesian formalism for estimating free-energy changes from non-equilibrium work measurements that compensates for instrument noise and combines data from multiple driving protocols. We reanalyze a recent set of experiments in which a single RNA hairpin is unfolded and refolded using optical tweezers at three different rates. Interestingly, the fastest and farthest-from-equilibrium measurements contain the least instrumental noise, and therefore provide a more accurate estimate of the free energies than a few slow, more noisy, near-equilibrium measurements. The methods we propose here will extend the scope of single-molecule experiments; they can be used in the analysis of data from measurements with AFM, optical, and magnetic tweezers.Comment: 8 page

    The kinematics of the Local Group in a cosmological context

    Recent observations constrained the tangential velocity of M31 with respect to the Milky Way (MW) to be v_tan<34.4 km/s and the radial velocity to be in the range v_rad=-109+/- 4.4 km/s (van der Marel et al. 2012). In this study we use a large volume high resolution N-body cosmological simulation (Bolshoi) together with three constrained simulations to statistically study this kinematics in the context of the LCDM. The comparison of the ensembles of simulated pairs with the observed LG at the 1-sigma level in the uncertainties has been done with respect to the radial and tangential velocities, the reduced orbital energy (e_tot), angular momentum (l_orb) and the dimensionless spin parameter, lambda. Our main results are: (i) the preferred radial and tangential velocities for pairs in LCDM are v_rad=-80+/-20 km/s, v_tan=50+/-10 km/s, (ii) pairs around that region are 3 to 13 times more common than pairs within the observational values, (iii) 15%to 24% of LG-like pairs in LCDM have energy and angular momentum consistent with observations while (iv) 9% to 13% of pairs in the same sample show similar values in the inferred dimensionless spin parameter. It follows that within current observational uncertainties the quasi-conserved quantities that characterize the orbit of the LG, i.e. e_tot, r_orb and lambda, do not challenge the standard LCDM model, but the model is in tension with regard to the actual values of the radial and tangential velocities. This might hint to a problem of the LCDM model to reproduce the observed LG.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters.
