    Two Component Heat Diffusion Observed in CMR Manganites

    We investigate the low-temperature electron, lattice, and spin dynamics of LaMnO_3 (LMO) and La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 (LCMO) by resonant pump-probe reflectance spectroscopy. Probing the high-spin d-d transition as a function of time delay and probe energy, we compare the responses of the Mott insulator and the double-exchange metal to the photoexcitation. Attempts have previously been made to describe the sub-picosecond dynamics of CMR manganites in terms of a phenomenological three temperature model describing the energy transfer between the electron, lattice and spin subsystems followed by a comparatively slow exponential decay back to the ground state. However, conflicting results have been reported. Here we first show clear evidence of an additional component in the long term relaxation due to film-to-substrate heat diffusion and then develop a modified three temperature model that gives a consistent account for this feature. We confirm our interpretation by using it to deduce the bandgap in LMO. In addition we also model the non-thermal sub-picosecond dynamics, giving a full account of all observed transient features both in the insulating LMO and the metallic LCMO.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures http://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevB.81.064434 v2: Abstract correcte

    Fixational Eye Movements in the Earliest Stage of Metazoan Evolution

    All known photoreceptor cells adapt to constant light stimuli, fading the retinal image when exposed to an immobile visual scene. Counter strategies are therefore necessary to prevent blindness, and in mammals this is accomplished by fixational eye movements. Cubomedusae occupy a key position for understanding the evolution of complex visual systems and their eyes are assumedly subject to the same adaptive problems as the vertebrate eye, but lack motor control of their visual system. The morphology of the visual system of cubomedusae ensures a constant orientation of the eyes and a clear division of the visual field, but thereby also a constant retinal image when exposed to stationary visual scenes. Here we show that bell contractions used for swimming in the medusae refresh the retinal image in the upper lens eye of Tripedalia cystophora. This strongly suggests that strategies comparable to fixational eye movements have evolved at the earliest metazoan stage to compensate for the intrinsic property of the photoreceptors. Since the timing and amplitude of the rhopalial movements concur with the spatial and temporal resolution of the eye it circumvents the need for post processing in the central nervous system to remove image blur

    Ocular and Extraocular Expression of Opsins in the Rhopalium of Tripedalia cystophora (Cnidaria: Cubozoa)

    A growing body of work on the neuroethology of cubozoans is based largely on the capabilities of the photoreceptive tissues, and it is important to determine the molecular basis of their light sensitivity. The cubozoans rely on 24 special purpose eyes to extract specific information from a complex visual scene to guide their behavior in the habitat. The lens eyes are the most studied photoreceptive structures, and the phototransduction in the photoreceptor cells is based on light sensitive opsin molecules. Opsins are photosensitive transmembrane proteins associated with photoreceptors in eyes, and the amino acid sequence of the opsins determines the spectral properties of the photoreceptors. Here we show that two distinct opsins (Tripedalia cystophora-lens eye expressed opsin and Tripedalia cystophora-neuropil expressed opsin, or Tc-leo and Tc-neo) are expressed in the Tripedalia cystophora rhopalium. Quantitative PCR determined the level of expression of the two opsins, and we found Tc-leo to have a higher amount of expression than Tc-neo. In situ hybridization located Tc-leo expression in the retinal photoreceptors of the lens eyes where the opsin is involved in image formation. Tc-neo is expressed in a confined part of the neuropil and is probably involved in extraocular light sensation, presumably in relation to diurnal activity

    Structural parameterizations for boxicity

    The boxicity of a graph GG is the least integer dd such that GG has an intersection model of axis-aligned dd-dimensional boxes. Boxicity, the problem of deciding whether a given graph GG has boxicity at most dd, is NP-complete for every fixed d≥2d \ge 2. We show that boxicity is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the cluster vertex deletion number of the input graph. This generalizes the result of Adiga et al., that boxicity is fixed-parameter tractable in the vertex cover number. Moreover, we show that boxicity admits an additive 11-approximation when parameterized by the pathwidth of the input graph. Finally, we provide evidence in favor of a conjecture of Adiga et al. that boxicity remains NP-complete when parameterized by the treewidth.Comment: 19 page

    Density-potential mappings in quantum dynamics

    In a recent letter [Europhys. Lett. 95, 13001 (2011)] the question of whether the density of a time-dependent quantum system determines its external potential was reformulated as a fixed point problem. This idea was used to generalize the existence and uniqueness theorems underlying time-dependent density functional theory. In this work we extend this proof to allow for more general norms and provide a numerical implementation of the fixed-point iteration scheme. We focus on the one-dimensional case as it allows for a more in-depth analysis using singular Sturm-Liouville theory and at the same time provides an easy visualization of the numerical applications in space and time. We give an explicit relation between the boundary conditions on the density and the convergence properties of the fixed-point procedure via the spectral properties of the associated Sturm-Liouville operator. We show precisely under which conditions discrete and continuous spectra arise and give explicit examples. These conditions are then used to show that in the most physically relevant cases the fixed point procedure converges.     Systematic Approach To Case Recertification

    LecturePg. 133-138Turbomachinery life expectancy, economic conditions, and plant capacity enhancements have created a need for vintage compressors to be reevaluated and re-engineered for operational parameters that may not have been incorporated in the original design. Aerodynamic revamps have been standard practice for optimizing flow conditions to today's processes. These changeouts have traditionally been limited to manipulation within designed pressure ratings. Recently, in addition to the aerodynamic enhancements, processes are requiring increased pressure levels. These new requirements and requests have posed questions and concerns which have not been of predominant importance previously. Integrity of the containment vessel, leakage of process gases, condition, and life expectancy at above design conditions must be addressed to make an informed comparison between a rerate and purchase of replacement equipment. The hazards and possible expenses of operating turbomachinery above rated pressures without a systematic and consistent verification process should be avoided. Hence, a new field has been undertaken by OEMs driven by equipment user request, to certify existing casings at increased levels in the safest and most reliable manner. The following guidelines have been produced to conduct such rerates with minimal risk to the compressor case and thus, the processes in which these machines play an intricate part: • Specific case testing history • Examine records and designs to determine if the casing has been hydrotested previously, or has been hydrotested to appropriate new condition levels. • Review of similar vintage machinery • Review designs of similar machines built in the same era to determine if ratings have ever been within appropriate levels. • Analyze the specific case design • Analyze the case with the use of modem and proven finite element methods to verify the integrity of the case design at elevated pressures based on blueprint dimensions. Review data with the user, discussing concerns of both parties and come to a consensus whether a hydrotest is feasible. • Inspect and review • Inspect the case per manufacturing blueprints to verify thickness and overall condition of the case and continuity of FEA model. With the use of magnetic particles, inspect the casing for indications and discontinuities which could endanger the casing during the hydrotest. Review the data and determine if continuation of testing is feasible. • Strain gauge casing • Place strain gauge equipment at key high stress locations based on FEA model to protest casing during hydrotesting. • Hydrotest case • With online strain readings, hydrotest casing to the appropriate levels. Carefully monitor the strain data to protect the casing from going beyond prescribed stress levels at the desired pressure levels. If stress levels appear to be approaching recommended limits, consensus should be made on whether to continue. • Recertification • After a successful hydrotest, rerate the compressor name plate and records for the new pressure level. The following paper will use a case history as a step by step example to show how case recertification has been accomplished in the safest possible manner with minimal risk to equipment

    Preliminary investigations of elemental content, microporosity, and specific surface area of porous rocks using PIXE and X-ray microtomography techniques

    Determination of physical properties of porous geological materials is of great importance for oil industry. The knowledge of rocks properties is usually obtained from porosity studies such as pore size distribution, specific surface area determination, and hydrodynamic permeability calculations. This study describes determination of elemental composition and measurements of the particular physical properties of geological samples (porous sandstone rocks) by means of the nuclear and X-ray microprobes at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków, Poland. The special emphasis has been put on the computed microtomography method. Measurements have been carried out in close cooperation with Department of Geophysics, FGGEP AGH in Kraków, Poland. Chemical composition of the Rotliegend sandstone rock samples (few millimeters diameter), extracted from a borehole at 2679.6 m, 2741.4 m and 2742.4 m depth have been investigated using the 2.2 MeV proton beam (proton induced X-ray emission technique). Next, measurements of the porosity and the specific surface area of the pore space have been carried out using the X-ray microtomography technique. Basing on microtomographic data obtained with the high spatial resolution, simulations of the fluid dynamic in the void space of porous media have been carried out. Lattice Boltzmann method in the 3DQ19 geometrical model has been used in order to predict the hydraulic permeability of the media. In order to avoid viscosity-permeability dependence the multiple-relaxation-time model with half-way bounce back boundary conditions has been used. Computing power-consuming processing has been performed with the use of modern grid infrastructure

    Identification of genes expressed by immune cells of the colon that are regulated by colorectal cancer-associated variants.

    A locus on human chromosome 11q23 tagged by marker rs3802842 was associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) in a genome-wide association study; this finding has been replicated in case-control studies worldwide. In order to identify biologic factors at this locus that are related to the etiopathology of CRC, we used microarray-based target selection methods, coupled to next-generation sequencing, to study 103 kb at the 11q23 locus. We genotyped 369 putative variants from 1,030 patients with CRC (cases) and 1,061 individuals without CRC (controls) from the Ontario Familial Colorectal Cancer Registry. Two previously uncharacterized genes, COLCA1 and COLCA2, were found to be co-regulated genes that are transcribed from opposite strands. Expression levels of COLCA1 and COLCA2 transcripts correlate with rs3802842 genotypes. In colon tissues, COLCA1 co-localizes with crystalloid granules of eosinophils and granular organelles of mast cells, neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells and differentiated myeloid-derived cell lines. COLCA2 is present in the cytoplasm of normal epithelial, immune and other cell lineages, as well as tumor cells. Tissue microarray analysis demonstrates the association of rs3802842 with lymphocyte density in the lamina propria (p = 0.014) and levels of COLCA1 in the lamina propria (p = 0.00016) and COLCA2 (tumor cells, p = 0.0041 and lamina propria, p = 6 × 10(-5)). In conclusion, genetic, expression and immunohistochemical data implicate COLCA1 and COLCA2 in the pathogenesis of colon cancer. Histologic analyses indicate the involvement of immune pathways
