    PKS 0537-286, carrying the information of the environment of SMBHs in the early Universe

    We present the results of a multifrequency campaign on the high-redshift (z = 3.1) blazar PKS 0537-286. The source was observed at different epochs from 2006 to 2008 with INTEGRAL and Swift, and nearly simultaneously with ground-based near-IR/optical telescopes. The SEDs are compatible with a model based on synchrotron radiation and external inverse Compton scattering.     Systematic search for gamma-ray periodicity in active galactic nuclei detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope

    We use nine years of gamma-ray data provided by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) to systematically study the light curves of more than two thousand active galactic nuclei (AGN) included in recent Fermi-LAT catalogs. Ten different techniques are used, which are organized in an automatic periodicity-search pipeline, in order to search for evidence of periodic emission in gamma rays. Understanding the processes behind this puzzling phenomenon will provide a better view about the astrophysical nature of these extragalactic sources. However, the observation of temporal patterns in gamma-ray light curves of AGN is still challenging. Despite the fact that there have been efforts on characterizing the temporal emission of some individual sources, a systematic search for periodicities by means of a full likelihood analysis applied to large samples of sources was missing. Our analysis finds 11 AGN, of which 9 are identified for the first time, showing periodicity at more than 4sigma in at least four algorithms.     BAT X-ray Survey - III: X-ray Spectra and Statistical Properties

    In this concluding part of the series of three papers dedicated to the Swift/BAT hard X-ray survey (BXS), we focus on the X-ray spectral analysis and statistical properties of the source sample. Using a dedicated method to extract time-averaged spectra of BAT sources we show that Galactic sources have, generally, softer spectra than extragalactic objects and that Seyfert 2 galaxies are harder than Seyfert 1s. The averaged spectrum of all Seyfert galaxies is consistent with a power-law with photon index of 2.00 (+/-0.07). The cumulative flux-number relation for the extragalactic sources in the 14-170 keV band is best described by a power-law with a slope alpha=1.55 (+/-0.20) and a normalization of 9.6±1.9×103\pm1.9 \times 10^{-3} AGN deg2^{-2} (or 396(+/-80) AGN all-sky) above a flux level of 2×1011\times 10^{-11}erg cm2^{-2} s1^{-1} (~0.85 mCrab). The integration of the cumulative flux per unit area indicates that BAT resolves 1-2% of the X-ray background emission in the 14-170 keV band. A sub-sample of 24 extragalactic sources above the 4.5 sigma detection limit is used to study the statistical properties of AGN. This sample comprises local Seyfert galaxies (z=0.026, median value) and ~10% blazars. We find that 55% of the Seyfert galaxies are absorbed by column densities of Log(N_H)>22, but that none is a bona fide Compton-thick.     XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL observations of the black hole candidate XTE J1817-330

    The galactic black hole candidate XTE J1817-330 was discovered in outburst by RXTE in January 2006. We present here the results of an XMM-Newton Target of opportunity observation (TOO), performed on 13 March 2006 (44 days after the maximum), and an INTEGRAL observation performed on 15-18 February 2006 (18 days after the maximum). The EPIC-pn camera on-board XMM-Newton was used in the fast read-out Burst mode to avoid photon pile-up, while the RGSs were used in Spectroscopy high count-rate mode. We fit both the XMM-Newton and the INTEGRAL spectra with a two-component model consisting of a thermal accretion disk and a comptonizing hot corona. The soft X-ray spectrum is dominated by an accretion disk component, with a maximum temperature decreasing from 0.96+/-0.04 keV at the time of the INTEGRAL observation to 0.70+/-m0.01 keV on 13 March. The Optical Monitors on board INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton showed the source with magnitudes V: 11.3-11.4, U:15.0-15.1 and UVW1:14.7-14.8. The soft X-ray spectrum, together with the optical and UV data, show a low hydrogen column density towards the source, and several absorption lines, most likely of interstellar origin, are detected in the RGS spectrum: OI K-alpha, OI K-beta, OII, OIII and OVII, which trace both cold and hot components of the ISM. The soft X-ray spectrum indicates the presence of a black hole, with an estimate for the upper limit of the mass of 6.0(+4.0/-2.5) Msun.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    The WISE gamma-ray strip parametrization: the nature of the gamma-ray Active Galactic Nuclei of Uncertain type

    Despite the large number of discoveries made recently by Fermi, the origins of the so called unidentified gamma-ray sources remain unknown. The large number of these sources suggests that among them there could be a population that significantly contributes to the isotropic gamma-ray background and is therefore crucial to understand their nature. The first step toward a complete comprehension of the unidentified gamma-ray source population is to identify those that can be associated with blazars, the most numerous class of extragalactic sources in the gamma-ray sky. Recently, we discovered that blazars can be recognized and separated from other extragalactic sources using the infrared (IR) WISE satellite colors. The blazar population delineates a remarkable and distinctive region of the IR color-color space, the WISE blazar strip. In particular, the subregion delineated by the gamma-ray emitting blazars is even narrower and we named it as the WISE Gamma-ray Strip (WGS). In this paper we parametrize the WGS on the basis of a single parameter s that we then use to determine if gamma-ray Active Galactic Nuclei of the uncertain type (AGUs) detected by Fermi are consistent with the WGS and so can be considered blazar candidates. We find that 54 AGUs out of a set 60 analyzed have IR colors consistent with the WGS; only 6 AGUs are outliers. This result implies that a very high percentage (i.e., in this sample about 90%) of the AGUs detected by Fermi are indeed blazar candidates.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, Astrophysical Journal in pres

    INTEGRAL observations of the blazar Mrk 421 in outburst (Results of a multi-wavelength campaign)

    We report the results of a multi-wavelength campaign on the blazar Mrk 421 during outburst. We observed four strong flares at X-ray energies that were not seen at other wavelengths (partially because of missing data). From the fastest rise in the X-rays, an upper limit could be derived on the extension of the emission region. A time lag between high-energy and low-energy X-rays was observed, which allowed an estimation of the magnetic-field strength. The spectral analysis of the X-rays revealed a slight spectral hardening of the low-energy (3 - 43 keV) spectral index. The hardness-ratio analysis of the Swift-XRT (0.2 - 10 keV) data indicated a small correlation with the intensity; i. e., a hard-to-soft evolution was observed. At the energies of IBIS/ISGRI (20 - 150 keV), such correlations are less obvious. A multiwavelength spectrum was composed and the X-ray and bolometric luminosities are calculated.Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures; accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Infrared Colors of the gamma-ray detected blazars

    Blazars constitute the most enigmatic class of extragalactic gamma-ray sources, and their observational features have been ascribed to a relativistic jet closely aligned to the line of sight. They are generally divided in two main classes: the BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) and the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). In the case of BL Lacs the double bumped spectral energy distribution (SED) is generally described by the Synchrotron Self Compton (SSC) emission, while for the FSRQs it is interpreted as due to External Compton (EC) emission. Recently, we showed that in the [3.4]-[4.6]-[12] micron color- color diagram the blazar population covers a distinct region (i.e., the WISE blazar Strip, WBS), clearly separated from the other extragalactic sources that are dominated by thermal emission. In this paper we investigate the relation between the infrared and gamma-ray emission for a subset of confirmed blazars from the literature, associated with Fermi sources, for which WISE archival observations are available. This sample is a proper subset of the sample of sources used previously, and the availability of Fermi data is critical to constrain the models on the emission mechanisms for the blazars. We found that the selected blazars also lie on the WISE blazar Strip covering a narrower region of the infrared color-color planes than the overall blazars population. We then found an evident correlation between the IR and gamma-ray spectral indices expected in the SSC and EC frameworks. Finally, we determined the ratio between their gamma-ray and infrared fluxes, a surrogate of the ratio of powers between the inverse Compton and the synchrotron SED components, and used such parameter to test different emitting scenarios blazars.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ, to appear in 2012 March 20 editio
