These issues were of paramount importance to the earliest Christians, the apostle Paul included. Eschatology was not then, as in later Christian theology, simply an appendix to Christianity much in the way that John's Revelation seems to be a sort of strange appendix to the New Testament. Even the importance of such issues as the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus depended upon the way in which they fit into and altered the eschatological scheme. Because Jesus had died and had been raised again, he was Lord of the world and was even then beginning to prepare to bring in the Kingdom of God. Christians were not to wait for the day when they would die and go to heaven, but for the day when Jesus would come from heaven to bring the Kingdom to Earth (I Thessalonians 1:9-10). Eschatology was an essential key to their whole way of thinking. Historically Paul's eschatology has been the focus of scant attention. This is because the more elaborate apocalyptic stories found in texts such as Daniel, the Synoptic Gospels (Mark 13 with parallels), and especially John's Revelation seem to swallow up and render superfluous anything Paul has to say about the issue. Whether Paul might have had in mind something different or even contradictory to these other sources is often a possibility considered unthinkable if not heretical. The purpose of this research has been to allow Paul to speak for himself on the issue, letting the chips fall where they may in regard to his agreement or disagreement with other New Testament authors

The Impact of Dual Identities of College Student-Athletes on Academic Performance

Maintaining a balance between the dual roles of being both a student and an athlete can be challenging for many college student-athletes. While research has indicated identity conflicts exist for student-athletes because of these two roles, few investigations have analyzed the impact of having dual identities on academic performance. Using identity theory as a theoretical framework, this study sought to determine if relationships exist among athlete identity, student identity, and GPA. In addition, this study examined whether these relationships varied based on gender, race, year in school, major, and sport. A survey instrument that included the Academic and Athletic Identity Scale (Yukhymenko-Lescroart, 2014) was distributed to 469 student-athletes at one NCAA Division I university. Data analyses were conducted from 192 completed surveys. Results revealed a moderate positive correlation between student identity and athlete identity (r=.45, p.05). Few differences were found when examining correlations by gender, race, year in school, major, and sport. The only significant findings were differences in the correlations between student identity and athlete identity based on year in school and major. This correlation was much higher for juniors (.70) in comparison to seniors (.19). Also, the correlation between these two identities was higher for social science majors (.54) than natural science majors (.30). Results are discussed in relation to identity theory and implications for coaches and athletic academic advisors are given

A study of the response of nonlinear springs

The various phases to developing a methodology for studying the response of a spring-reinforced arch subjected to a point load are discussed. The arch is simply supported at its ends with both the spring and the point load assumed to be at midspan. The spring is present to off-set the typical snap through behavior normally associated with arches, and to provide a structure that responds with constant resistance over a finite displacement. The various phases discussed consist of the following: (1) development of the closed-form solution for the shallow arch case; (2) development of a finite difference analysis to study (shallow) arches; and (3) development of a finite element analysis for studying more general shallow and nonshallow arches. The two numerical analyses rely on a continuation scheme to move the solution past limit points, and to move onto bifurcated paths, both characteristics being common to the arch problem. An eigenvalue method is used for a continuation scheme. The finite difference analysis is based on a mixed formulation (force and displacement variables) of the governing equations. The governing equations for the mixed formulation are in first order form, making the finite difference implementation convenient. However, the mixed formulation is not well-suited for the eigenvalue continuation scheme. This provided the motivation for the displacement based finite element analysis. Both the finite difference and the finite element analyses are compared with the closed form shallow arch solution. Agreement is excellent, except for the potential problems with the finite difference analysis and the continuation scheme. Agreement between the finite element analysis and another investigator's numerical analysis for deep arches is also good

Negative mood state impairs false memory priming when problem-solving

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of emotional mood states on the ability to create effective primes using the recently developed false memory priming paradigm. A negative or positive mood state was induced before Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) list presentation. A further control group experienced no mood induction. Participants were then presented with Compound Remote Associate Task (CRAT) problems, half of which had been primed by the previous DRM lists whose critical lure was the solution to the CRAT problem. The results of this study showed that induction of a negative mood state not only impaired recall of critical lures but also diminished their effectiveness as primes for solving CRAT problems. In contrast, for both positive mood and control conditions, the false memory priming advantage was evident, with a higher proportion of primed problems solved in comparison to those not primed. Findings are discussed in relation to the role of affect on semantic activation and the adaptive consequences of false memories
