    "I Saw You": searching for lost love via practices of reading, writing and responding

    How do emotions move and how do emotions move us? How are feelings and recognitions distributed socio-materially? Based on a multi-site ethnographic study of a romantic correspondance system, this article explores the themes of love, privacy, identity and public displays. Informed by ethnomethodology and actor-network theory its investigations into these informal affairs are somewhat unusual in that much of the research carried out by those bodies of work concentrates on institutional settings such as laboratories, offices and courtrooms. In common with ethnomethodology it attempts to re-specify some topics of interest in the social sciences and humanities; in this case, documents and practices of writing and reading those documents. A key element of the approach taken is restoring to reading and writing their situated nature as observable, knowable, distributed community practices. Re-specifying topics for the social sciences involves the detailed description of several situated ways in which the romantic correspondence system is used. Detailing the translations, transformations and transportations of documents as 'quasi-objects' through several orderings, the article suggests that documents have no essential meaning and that making them meaningful is part of the work of those settings

    An ethnography of a neighbourhood café: informality, table arrangements and background noise

    Café society is something that many of us as customers and/or social theorists take for granted. Cafés are places where we are not simply served hot beverages but are also in some way partaking of a specific form of public life. It is this latter aspect that has attracted the attention of social theorists, especially Jürgen Habermas, and leads them to locate the café as a key place in the development of modernity. Our approach to cafés is to ‘turn the tables’ on theories of the public sphere and return to just what the life of a particular café consists of, and in so doing re-specify a selection of topics related to public spaces. The particular topics we deal with in a ‘worldly manner’ are the socio-material organisation of space, informality and rule following. In as much as we are able we have drawn on an ethnomethodological way of doing and analysing our ethnographic studies

    An analysis of bi-directional use of frequencies for satellite communications

    The bi-directional use of frequencies allocated for space communications has the potential to double the orbit/spectrum capacity available. The technical feasibility of reverse band use (RBU) at C-band (4 GHz uplinks and 6 GHz downlinks) is studied. The analysis identifies the constraints under which both forward and reverse band use satellite systems can share the same frequencies with terrestrial, line of sight transmission systems. The results of the analysis show that RBU satellite systems can be similarly sized to forward band use (FBU) satellite systems. In addition, the orbital separation requirements between RBU and FBU satellite systems are examined. The analysis shows that a carrier to interference ratio of 45 dB can be maintianed between RBU and FBU satellites separated by less than 0.5 deg., and that a carrier to interference ratio of 42 dB can be maintained in the antipodal case. Rain scatter propagation analysis shows that RBU and FBU Earth stations require separation distances fo less than 10 km at a rain rate of 13.5 mm/hr escalating to less than 100 km at a rain rate of 178 mm/hr for Earth station antennas in the 3 to 10 m range

    'Bring us the female condom': HIV intervention, gender and political empowerment in two South African communities

    The quotation which heads this paper encapsulates two important issues in AIDS research in South Africa: the one is substantive, the other methodological. The link between them is the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in the country and the indication not only that women are more at risk of infection than men, but that, as in many other parts of the world, much of their vulnerability is gender based. ‘Bring us the female condom’ sums up the response of one particular group of black South African women to AIDS education. Their demand was a reflection of their relative domestic and gender empowerment - and also a high degree of political mobilization. However, their position is not necessarily shared by other black women. But the call for the female condom went further: it was a challenge to rethink our position as researchers and particularly to face the implications of commitment to a participatory model of community based intervention research

    Transforming teacher-family relationships: Shifting roles and perceptions of home visits through the Funds of Knowledge approach

    Education has embraced the idea of an ‘asset approach’ to working with families and children, creating a focus on developing collaborative relationships with families by building on what they bring to the table. In this paper we explore what happened when early childhood teachers entered homes to learn from families and identify their Funds of Knowledge. The findings show how issues of power and perception surfaced when teachers attempted to shift their role from that of teacher to learner. In analyzing teachers’ experience before, during, and after ethnographic home visits we saw their general desire to adopt an asset-based mentality. However, the hegemonic structure of schooling, previous experiences, and traditional teachers’ roles shaped their experience with the Funds of Knowledge framework. We end by discussing the implications for teachers and teacher educators who are interested in using home visits to develop an asset approach to their work with families

    The power of improvisational teaching

    In this study we examine how improvisation can facilitate understanding how teachers respond to children\u27s multiple resources, interests, experiences, and skills in early childhood programs. Improvisation is conceptualized as a responsive, partnered activity through which teachers and children generate meaning and knowledge together. In our analysis we show improvisation is taken up differently in two classrooms and how it variably provides opportunities for learning. Two cases from a professional development program designed to support culturally and developmentally appropriate early mathematics are used to demonstrate the possibilities improvisation creates in era of increasing standardization of curriculum

    Teaching and assessing consultation skills: an evaluation of a South African workshop on using the Leicester Assessment Package

    BackgroundThe consultation is at the very centre of clinical practice. It is in the meeting between doctor and patient that the story is told (and in good practice properly heeded) and decisions are made about the cause and treatment of the patient's problem. Following one year of supervised internship, South African doctors are required to do a year of community service and these doctors mostly work in understaffed peripheral hospitals. A substantial component of this work is unsupervised consultations with patients suffering from new or complex continuing diseases. On graduation, these doctors therefore require a high level of consultation competence. They must be able to make accurate diagnoses and manage patients' problems reliably and efficiently.The Leicester Assessment Package (LAP) was originally developed to assess the consultation competence of general practitioners in the UK. It was subsequently adapted for use in undergraduate teaching. In 2002, the LAP was presented at a medical education conference in South Africa. As a result, the Department of Family Medicine at Pretoria University began using the LAP in the teaching and formative assessment of the consultation skills of senior students in outpatient clinics. In 2003, the University of the Witwatersrand introduced a four-year graduate entry medical curriculum. The Centre for Health Care Education was interested in assessing whether the LAP would be suitable for the summative assessment of the consultation performance of students during their third and four years of the new curriculum.A workshop course was organised to train senior clinicians from the Universities of Pretoria and the Witwatersrand in the use of the LAP as a means of teaching and assessing the consultation performance of South African medical students.MethodTwenty-two experienced South African medical educators participated in a three-day workshop. Their attitudes to the LAP and the forms of teaching that its use promotes were analysed by responses to pre- and post-workshop questionnaires with Likert-scale and free-text questions.ResultsThe participants were positive about the LAP at the end of the workshop. They all believed that it was a useful instrument, and a majority would apply this method in their own departments. There were continuing reservations about the feasibility of the method and some respondents felt it would require some adaptation, particularly to the criteria for awarding grades.ConclusionsThe workshop participants learnt to use an instrument developed in the United Kingdom that encourages an analytical approach to the assessment and teaching of consultation skills.     Numerical arc segmentation algorithm for a radio conference: A software tool for communication satellite systems planning

    The Numerical Arc Segmentation Algorithm for a Radio Conference (NASARC) provides a method of generating predetermined arc segments for use in the development of an allotment planning procedure to be carried out at the 1988 World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC) on the Use of the Geostationary Satellite Orbit and the Planning of Space Services Utilizing It. Through careful selection of the predetermined arc (PDA) for each administration, flexibility can be increased in terms of choice of system technical characteristics and specific orbit location while reducing the need for coordination among administrations. The NASARC software determines pairwise compatibility between all possible service areas at discrete arc locations. NASARC then exhaustively enumerates groups of administrations whose satellites can be closely located in orbit, and finds the arc segment over which each such compatible group exists. From the set of all possible compatible groupings, groups and their associated arc segments are selected using a heuristic procedure such that a PDA is identified for each administration. Various aspects of the NASARC concept and how the software accomplishes specific features of allotment planning are discussed
