Chaos in the one-dimensional gravitational three-body problem
We have investigated the appearance of chaos in the 1-dimensional Newtonian
gravitational three-body system (three masses on a line with pairwise
potential). We have concentrated in particular on how the behavior changes when
the relative masses of the three bodies change (with negative total energy).
For two mass choices we have calculated 18000 full orbits (with initial states
on a lattice on the Poincar\'e section) and obtained dwell time
distributions. For 105 mass choices we have calculated Poincar\'e maps for
starting points. Our results show that the Poincar\'e section
(and hence the phase space) divides into three well defined regions with orbits
of different characteristics: 1) There is a region of fast scattering, with a
minimum of pairwise collisions and smooth dependence on initial values. 2) In
the chaotic scattering region the interaction times are longer, and both the
interaction time and the final state depend sensitively on the starting point
on the Poincar\'e section. For both 1) and 2) the initial and final states
consists of a binary + single particle. 3) The third region consists of
quasiperiodic orbits where the three masses are bound together forever. At the
center of the quasiperiodic region there is the periodic Schubart orbit, whose
stability turns out to correlate strongly with the global behavior.Comment: 24 pages of text (REVTEX 3.0) + 21 pages of figures. Figures are only

Dilute ferrimagnetic semiconductors in Fe-substituted spinel ZnGaO
Solid solutions of nominal composition
[ZnGaO][FeO], of the semiconducting spinel
ZnGaO with the ferrimagnetic spinel FeO have been prepared with
= 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15. All samples show evidence for long-range magnetic
ordering with ferromagnetic hysteresis at low temperatures. Magnetization as a
function of field for the = 0.15 sample is S-shaped at temperatures as high
as 200 K. M\"ossbauer spectroscopy on the = 0.15 sample confirms the
presence of Fe, and spontaneous magnetization at 4.2 K. The magnetic
behavior is obtained without greatly affecting the semiconducting properties of
the host; diffuse reflectance optical spectroscopy indicates that Fe
substitution up to = 0.15 does not affect the position of the band edge
absorption. These promising results motivate the possibility of dilute
ferrimagnetic semiconductors which do not require carrier mediation of the
magnetic moment.Comment: 9 pages and 6 figure
A new set of integrals of motion to propagate the perturbed two-body problem
A formulation of the perturbed two-body problem that relies on a new set of orbital elements is presented. The proposed method represents a generalization of the special perturbation method published by Peláez et al. (Celest Mech Dyn Astron 97(2):131?150,2007) for the case of a perturbing force that is partially or totally derivable from a potential. We accomplish this result by employing a generalized Sundman time transformation in the framework of the projective decomposition, which is a known approach for transforming the two-body problem into a set of linear and regular differential equations of motion. Numerical tests, carried out with examples extensively used in the literature, show the remarkable improvement of the performance of the new method for different kinds of perturbations and eccentricities. In particular, one notable result is that the quadratic dependence of the position error on the time-like argument exhibited by Peláez?s method for near-circular motion under the J2 perturbation is transformed into linear. Moreover, themethod reveals to be competitive with two very popular elementmethods derived from theKustaanheimo-Stiefel and Sperling-Burdet regularizations
Baseline Neurocognitive Performance and Symptoms in Those With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders and History of Concussion With Previous Loss of Consciousness
Previous consensus statements on sports concussion have highlighted the importance of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and loss of consciousness (LOC) as risk factors related to concussion management. The present study investigated how self-reported history of either ADHD diagnosis or history of previous concussion resulting in LOC influence baseline neurocognitive performance and self-reported symptoms. This analysis was performed retrospectively on data collected primarily from student-athletes, both Division 1 and club sports athletes. The dataset (n = 1460) is comprised of college students (age = 19.1 ± 1.4 years). Significant differences were found for composite scores on the ImPACT for both history of concussion (p = 0.016) and ADHD (p = 0.014). For concussion history, those with a previous concussion, non-LOC, performed better on the visual motor speed (p = 0.004). Those with diagnosis of ADHD performed worse on verbal memory (p = 0.001) and visual motor speed (p = 0.033). For total symptoms, concussion history (p < 0.001) and ADHD (p = 0.001) had an influence on total symptoms. Those with ADHD reported more symptoms for concussion history; those with previous LOC concussion reported more symptoms than those with non-LOC concussion (p = 0.003) and no history (p < 0.001). These results highlight the importance of baseline measures of neurocognitive function and symptoms in concussion management in order to account for pre-existing conditions such as ADHD and LOC from previous concussion that could influence these measures
The Al-Rich Part of the Fe-Al Phase Diagram
The Al-rich part of the Fe-Al phase diagram between 50 and 80 at.% Al including the complex intermetallic phases FeAl (ε), FeAl, FeAl, and Fe4Al was re-investigated in detail. A series of 19 alloys was produced and heat-treated at temperatures in the range from 600 to 1100 °C for up to 5000 h. The obtained data were further complemented by results from a number of diffusion couples, which helped to determine the homogeneity ranges of the phases FeAl, FeAl, and FeAl. All microstructures were inspected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and chemical compositions of the equilibrium phases as well as of the alloys were obtained by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Crystal structures and the variation of the lattice parameters were studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) was applied to measure all types of transition temperatures. From these results, a revised version of the Al-rich part of the phase diagram was constructed
Pipe organs have been built in Brazil or imported from elsewhere since the very first decades of the colonial period. Albeit relatively small in number, such instruments have inestimable historical and musical value. Notwithstanding, they are generally in very poor working condition and some have lost much of their original structure and configuration; they are often found in a state of abandonment and, incredible as it may seem, still under the threat of arbitrary interventions performed with no technical expertise or any concern for their historical and musicological significance. This article is an effort to understand how this state of affairs came to be, and discusses principles and criteria for the restoration, maintenance and preventive conservation of this legacy, based on assumptions regarding its original conditions and entitlement to restoration in accordance with the stringent standards already set for artifacts that enjoy the full status of cultural assets, which should also be urgently granted to pipe organs of any time and age
Histology of the Pharyngeal Constrictor Muscle in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome and Non-Syndromic Children with Velopharyngeal Insufficiency
Plastic surgeons aim to correct velopharyngeal insufficiency manifest by hypernasal speech with a velopharyngoplasty. The functional outcome has been reported to be worse in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome than in patients without the syndrome. A possible explanation is the hypotonia that is often present as part of the syndrome. To confirm a myogenic component of the etiology of velopharyngeal insufficiency in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, specimens of the pharyngeal constrictor muscle were taken from children with and without the syndrome. Histologic properties were compared between the groups. Specimens from the two groups did not differ regarding the presence of increased perimysial or endomysial space, fiber grouping by size or type, internalized nuclei, the percentage type I fibers, or the diameters of type I and type II fibers. In conclusion, a myogenic component of the etiology of velopharyngeal insufficiency in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome could not be confirmed
