    Motor Capabilities of Lower Limb Amputated Patients and Its Relation to Body Image and Depression

    Background: Lower limb amputation is a great event in the life of individual’s which having an counteractive effect on overall physical, psychological and social functioning of an individual so the study aim is to measure relation of motor capabilities of lower limb amputated patients on body image and depression level. Methods: Design: The descriptive correctional research design was utilized to achieve the aim of the study. Sample: A convenient sample of sixty four participant consisted of male and female adult amputee patients. Setting: This study was conducted in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Department at Minia University Hospital. Tools of data collection: Three scales and one tool were utilized; Bio socio-demographic characteristic and structured interview, Locomotor Capabilities Index, Amputee Body Image Scale and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scale. Results: 73.5% of the amputated patients have low locomotor capabilities while 93.7% of the study sample has a low body image and 31.2% of the study sample suffers from moderate depression after 6 month from amputation and high positive significant correlation between locomotor capabilities and body image, while that there was a high negative significant correlation between locomotor capabilities and depression level among the imputed patients. Conclusions: The recent amputee patients that are have lower limb prosthesis suffer from low locomotor capabilities and theses have negative impact on their body image and depression level. Recommendation: A well planned structured rehabilitation program should be done to the specific needs of people with limb amputation in order to be able to find out its impact on their functional abilities, body image and depression level.     Acrylamides with hydrolytically labile carbonate ester side chains as versatile building blocks for well-defined block copolymer micelles via RAFT polymerization

    En route towards improved delivery systems for targeted chemotherapy, we propose a straightforward approach for the hydrophobic modification of the acrylamide N-(2-Hydroxyethyl) acrylamide (HEAm). An ethyl or benzyl group was introduced via a hydrolytically sensitive carbonate ester yielding HEAm-EC and HEAm-BC, respectively. Block copolymers of HEAm, respectively PEG and HEAm-EC or HEAm-BC were successfully synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, obtaining a library of well-defined block copolymers with different degrees of polymerization (DP). To further explore the versatility of our approach in terms of polymer synthesis, self-assembly, drug solubilization and in vitro cell interaction, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyHEAm as hydrophilic polymer blocks were compared. The block copolymers formed micellar nanoparticles (10-100 nm) in PBS and could efficiently solubilize hydrophobic dyes and anti-cancer drugs. Benzyl carbonate ester side chains increased micellar stability and drug loading capacity. Moreover, PEG as hydrophilic block showed in comparison to HEAm more promising results concerning both colloidal stability and drug loading capacity. Confocal microscopy showed that the micelles could efficiently deliver a hydrophobic dye inside the cells. Finally, we also demonstrated efficient formulation of the anti-cancer drug paclitaxel with an in vitro cancer cell killing performance comparable or even better than the two commercial PTX nano-formulations Abraxane and Genexol-PM at equal drug dose. In conclusion, modification of HEAm through carbonate linkages offers a versatile platform for the design of degradable polymers with potential for biomedical applications

    Traditional methods for managing illness in newborns and infants in an Arab society

    Aim: This study explored self‐management practices in relation to traditional methods for managing illness in newborns and infants and the implications of these practices on infant health. Background: Self‐medication with folk remedies is believed to have short‐ and long‐term impacts on well‐being. Little is known about how mothers in Arab societies used their traditional beliefs and practices in self‐managing their newborns’ and infants’ health. Methods: Data were collected from five focus groups using open‐ended questions with 37 mothers. Participants were selected using snowball sampling and were recruited from four different cities in Jordan between June 2016 and August 2016. Ethical approval: All identifying information regarding the study participants has been omitted, and this study was approved by the Academic Research Committee at the University of Jordan. Findings: Mothers were more willing to try herbal remedies, traditional massage and certain foods to self‐manage their infants’ health. Folk remedies were not restricted to traditions handed down through generations, but included a representation of newly emerged trends towards ‘safety’ or ‘nature’. Conclusions: While the use of folk remedies have been handed down generations as customs, today, virtual support groups and social media provide modern resources for folk remedies’ promotion in care and self‐management. Implications for nursing and health policy: Nursing and health policymakers can use our findings for planning and developing strategies and health policies that increase public awareness about adverse health effects associated with herbal remedies. Such strategies are likely to be facilitated through partnerships between nursing and midwifery education institutions, antenatal clinics and social media in the region

    Transmission measurements of a new metamaterial sample with negative refraction index

    We presented the microwave experiments with a new metamaterial composed of triangular split ring resonators (TSRRs) and wire strip at microwave regime. The transmission measurements were performed in free space for two LHM samples which have different number of TSRRs and wire strips. The experimental results show that the left-handed transmission peak stands in the frequency band where both the permittivity and permeability are negative. It is also observed that left-handed transmission band can be shifted if the number of TSRRs and wire strips are changed. Crown Copyright © 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Does a reduction in alcohol use by Dutch high school students relate to higher use of tobacco and cannabis?

    Background: Substance use of adolescents was investigated in a region around Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in the period 2005-2009. The study was intended to find out to what extent behaviour related to different substances are interrelated and how trends develop in different subgroups. Methods: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted among Dutch students in the second and fourth year of secondary school, aged 13-16 [n = 1,854 in 2005; n = 2,088 in 2009] by making use of an online questionnaire including questions about alcohol consumption, tobacco use (smoking behaviour) and cannabis use. Two educational levels were included. Results: Decreases in alcohol consumption, tobacco and cannabis use were found between 2005 and 2009. The strongest decline was seen in alcohol consumption. Last month drinking decreased from 61.8 % in 2005 to 36.5 % in 2009. Last month binge drinking decreased from 38.7 % in 2005 to 24.0 % in 2009. Reduced alcohol consumption was found among boys and girls, for all ages and in both educational levels. Changes were strongest among 13-year-olds. Weekly or daily smoking declined between 2005 and 2009 among 13-year-olds, girls and students in the lower schooling level. Last month cannabis use decreased among girls and students in the higher schooling level. In both 2005 and 2009 clustering with alcohol consumption was found for the use of other substances. Conclusions: Between 2005 and 2009 alcohol consumption strongly decreased among high school students. This may be due to the national prevention campaign which in the same period highlighted the importance of not drinking before the age of 16. The decrease in smoking and cannabis use between 2005 and 2009 may be due to clustering with alcohol consumption. A reduction in the use of alcohol in adolescence did not lead to replacement by tobacco or cannabis use

    Encapsulation Of Ag Nanoparticle-Carbon Composite And Enhancement Of Visible Light ZnO Nanorods Photodiode

    In this paper, the effect of encapsulating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs)- carbon composite onto zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs) hydrothermally grown on silicon substrate is characterized and its photodiode performance studied. The composite was dissolved in acetone and drop casted onto ZnO NRs and the samples are baked on a hot plate. FESEM imaging was done and shows the top part of ZnO NRs coated with the composite and EDX testing shows the component are made of carbon as the majority and Ag the minority component. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows the Ag-NPs embedded into the carbon coating. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra shows slight peak broadening of the ZnO main peak at 378 nm. Photodiode measurements shows the encapsulated nanorods has reduced photoresponse to UV light (395 nm) but more responsive to visible light (460 nm) due to creation of new energy states inside the band gap of ZnO

    “3D Bioprinting for Reconstructive Surgery: Principles, Applications and Challenges”

    Despite the increasing laboratory research in the growing field of 3D bioprinting, there are few reports of successful translation into surgical practice. This review outlines the principles of 3D bioprinting including software and hardware processes, biocompatible technological platforms and suitable bioinks. The advantages of 3D bioprinting over traditional tissue engineering techniques in assembling cells, biomaterials and biomolecules in a spatially controlled manner to reproduce native tissue macro-, micro- and nanoarchitectures are discussed, together with an overview of current progress in bioprinting tissue types relevant for plastic and reconstructive surgery. If successful, this platform technology has the potential to biomanufacture autologous tissue for reconstruction, obviating the need for donor sites or immunosuppression. The biological, technological and regulatory challenges are highlighted, with strategies to overcome these challenges by using an integrated approach from the fields of engineering, biomaterial science, cell biology and reconstructive microsurgery

    The Inherited Intestinal Microbiota from Myeloid-Specific ZIP8KO Mice Impairs Pulmonary Host Defense against Pneumococcal Pneumonia

    Intestinal dysbiosis increases susceptibility to infection through the alteration of metabolic profiles, which increases morbidity. Zinc (Zn) homeostasis in mammals is tightly regulated by 24 Zn transporters. ZIP8 is unique in that it is required by myeloid cells to maintain proper host defense against bacterial pneumonia. In addition, a frequently occurring ZIP8 defective variant (SLC39A8 rs13107325) is strongly associated with inflammation-based disorders and bacterial infection. In this study, we developed a novel model to study the effects of ZIP8-mediated intestinal dysbiosis on pulmonary host defense independent of the genetic effects. Cecal microbial communities from a myeloid-specific Zip8 knockout mouse model were transplanted into germ-free mice. Conventionalized ZIP8KO-microbiota mice were then bred to produce F1 and F2 generations of ZIP8KO-microbiota mice. F1 ZIP8KO-microbiota mice were also infected with S. pneumoniae, and pulmonary host defense was assessed. Strikingly, the instillation of pneumococcus into the lung of F1 ZIP8KO-microbiota mice resulted in a significant increase in weight loss, inflammation, and mortality when compared to F1 wild-type (WT)-microbiota recipients. Similar defects in pulmonary host defense were observed in both genders, although consistently greater in females. From these results, we conclude that myeloid Zn homeostasis is not only critical for myeloid function but also plays a significant role in the maintenance and control of gut microbiota composition. Further, these data demonstrate that the intestinal microbiota, independent of host genetics, play a critical role in governing host defense in the lung against infection. Finally, these data strongly support future microbiome-based interventional studies, given the high incidence of zinc deficiency and the rs13107325 allele in humans
