Energy Prices, Inflation, and Recession, 1974-1975
The energy price shock depressed real output by two percent in 1974 and by five percent in 1975, according to our results. Prices rose by four percent in 1974 and by another two percent in 1975. These conclusions are derived from an aggregate model of the U.S. economy with an explicit role of energy in production. The distinction between expected and unexpected shocks is an important part of the model. We also examine monetary and fiscal policies that might have offset the energy shock.
Triplet Production by Linearly Polarized Photons
The process of electron-positron pair production by linearly polarized
photons is used as a polarimeter to perform mobile measurement of linear photon
polarization. In the limit of high photon energies, omega, the distributions of
the recoil-electron momentum and azimuthal angle do not depend on the photon
energy in the laboratory frame. We calculate the power corrections of order
m/omega to the above distributions and estimate the deviation from the
asymptotic result for various values of omega.Comment: LaTeX2e, 13 pages, 5 figure files (eps), submitted to Phys. Rev.
Modal properties of photonic crystal cavities and applications to lasers
Photonic crystal cavities enable strong light–matter interactions, with numerous applica-tions, such as ultra-small and energy-efficient semiconductor lasers, enhanced nonlinearities and single-photon sources. This paper reviews the properties of the modes of photonic crystal cavities, with a special focus on line-defect cavities. In particular, it is shown how the fundamental resonant mode in line-defect cavities gradually turns from Fabry–Perot-like to distributed-feedback-like with increasing cavity size. This peculiar behavior is directly traced back to the properties of the guided Bloch modes. Photonic crystal cavities based on Fano interference are also covered. This type of cavity is realized through coupling of a line-defect waveguide with an adjacent nanocavity, with applications to Fano lasers and optical switches. Finally, emerging cavities for extreme dielectric confinement are covered. These cavities promise extremely strong light–matter interactions by realizing deep sub-wavelength mode size while keeping a high quality factor
Polarized triplet production by circularly polarized photons
A process of the pair production by a circularly polarized photon in the
field of unpolarized atomic electron has been considered in the
Weizaecker-Williams approximation. The degree of longitudinal polarization of
positron and electron has been calculated. An exclusive cross-section as well
as a spectral distribution are obtained. We estimate the accuracy of our
calculations at the level of a few percent. We show the identity of the
positron polarization for considered process and for process of pair production
in the screened Coulomb field of nucleus.Comment: 9 pages, 3 picture
Overcoming phonon-induced dephasing for indistinguishable photon sources
Reliable single photon sources constitute the basis of schemes for quantum
communication and measurement based quantum computing. Solid state single
photon sources based on quantum dots are convenient and versatile but the
electronic transitions that generate the photons are subject to interactions
with lattice vibrations. Using a microscopic model of electron-phonon
interactions and a quantum master equation, we here examine phonon-induced
decoherence and assess its impact on the rate of production, and
indistinguishability, of single photons emitted from an optically driven
quantum dot system. We find that, above a certain threshold of desired
indistinguishability, it is possible to mitigate the deleterious effects of
phonons by exploiting a three-level Raman process for photon production
Signatures of stirring and mixing near the Gulf Stream front
In October, 1986 the surface waters adjacent to the Gulf Stream front were surveyed with an undulating profiler to describe the finescale structure of the mixed layer. The profiler was a Seasoar equipped with a CTD and fluorometer. The survey first defined the structure of a cyclonic eddy which resembled frontal eddies of the South Atlantic Bight in sea surface temperature imagery. The Seasoar transects revealed, however, that the cyclonic eddy lacked a cold dome typically seen in frontal eddies. Farther downstream the Seasoar defined the structure of streamers of Gulf Stream and Shelf water wrapped about the southern edge of a warm-core ring. The streamers had lateral and along-axis dimensions on the order of ≈ 10 km and 100 km, respectively, and were bordered by narrow intrusive features. The temporal history of the streamers was described from SST imagery, and the surface flow derived from ship\u27s drift vectors. CTD casts taken while following an isopycnal float provided a means to examine the structure of the intrusive features. Interleaving was evident at the boundaries of the streamers and intrusive features where high conductivity Cox numbers were concentrated, suggesting elevated microstructure activity. The Turner angle distribution, indicating either saltfingering or diffusive convection, did not correlate well with the Cox number distribution. This is interpreted as evidence that lateral, rather than diapycnal, mixing was the process mediating the exchange of properties at the boundaries of contrasting water types. In contrast to physical properties, the distribution of fluorescence showed relatively less structure in the surface layer between the ring and Gulf Stream front. In the surface layers of the two streamers the pigment and bacterial biomass, and the diatom species composition, were typical of Slope water communities. We hypothesize that small-scale mixing processes concentrated at the boundaries of the streamers were the mechanism by which Slope water plankton were seeded into streamers of different hydrographic origins. Presumably, high netplankton growth rates allowed the Slope water species to dominate the communities in the streamers

Human papillomavirus infection as a risk factor for anal and perianal skin cancer in a prospective study
Human papillomavirus has emerged as the leading infectious cause of cervical and other anogenital cancers. We have studied the relation between human papillomavirus infection and the subsequent risk of anal and perianal skin cancer. A case–cohort study within two large Nordic serum banks to which about 760 000 individuals had donated serum samples was performed. Subjects who developed anal and perianal skin cancer during follow up (median time of 10 years) were identified by registry linkage with the nationwide cancer registries in Finland and Norway. Twenty-eight cases and 1500 controls were analysed for the presence of IgG antibodies to HPV 16, 18, 33 or 73, and odds ratios of developing anal and perianal skin cancer were calculated. There was an increased risk of developing anal and perianal skin cancer among subjects seropositive for HPV 16 (OR=3.0; 95%CI=1.1–8.2) and HPV 18 (OR=4.4; 95%CI=1.1–17). The highest risks were seen for HPV 16 seropositive patients above the age of 45 years at serum sampling and for patients with a lag time of less than 10 years. This study provides prospective epidemiological evidence of an association between infection with HPV 16 and 18 and anal and perianal skin cancer
Patterns of childhood adverse events are associated with clinical characteristics of bipolar disorder
Background
Previous studies in bipolar disorder investigating childhood trauma and clinical presentations of the illness have mainly focused on physical and sexual abuse. Our aim was to explore further the relationship between childhood trauma and disease characteristics in bipolar disorder to determine which clinical characteristics were most strongly associated with childhood trauma total score, as well as subtypes of adverse childhood events, including physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect.
Methods
141 Patients with bipolar disorder were consecutively recruited, and disease history and clinical characteristics were assessed. History of childhood abuse was obtained using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Statistical methods used were factor analysis, Poisson and linear regression, and generalized additive modeling (GAM).
Results
The factor analysis of CTQ identified three factors: emotional abuse/neglect, sexual abuse and physical abuse. There were significant associations between CTQ total score and earlier onset of illness, reduced level of psychosocial functioning (GAF; Global Assessment of Functioning) and decreased number of hospitalization, which mainly were due to the factor emotional abuse/neglect. Physical abuse was significantly associated with lower GAF scores, and increased number of mood episodes, as well as self-harm. Sexual abuse was significantly associated with increased number of mood episodes. For mood episodes and self-harm the associations were characterized by great variance and fluctuations.
Conclusions
Our results suggest that childhood trauma is associated with a more severe course of bipolar illness. Further, childhood abuse (physical and sexual), as well as emotional abuse and neglect were significantly associated with accelerating staging process of bipolar disorder. By using specific trauma factors (physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional abuse/neglect) the associations become both more precise, and diverse
