Strong disorder renormalization group on fractal lattices: Heisenberg models and magnetoresistive effects in tight binding models
We use a numerical implementation of the strong disorder renormalization
group (RG) method to study the low-energy fixed points of random Heisenberg and
tight-binding models on different types of fractal lattices. For the Heisenberg
model new types of infinite disorder and strong disorder fixed points are
found. For the tight-binding model we add an orbital magnetic field and use
both diagonal and off-diagonal disorder. For this model besides the gap spectra
we study also the fraction of frozen sites, the correlation function, the
persistent current and the two-terminal current. The lattices with an even
number of sites around each elementary plaquette show a dominant
periodicity. The lattices with an odd number of sites around each elementary
plaquette show a dominant periodicity at vanishing diagonal
disorder, with a positive weak localization-like magnetoconductance at infinite
disorder fixed points. The magnetoconductance with both diagonal and
off-diagonal disorder depends on the symmetry of the distribution of on-site

The effect of combined glutamate receptor blockade in the NTS on the hypoxic ventilatory response in awake rats differs from the effect of individual glutamate receptor blockade.
Ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia (VAH) increases the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) and causes persistent hyperventilation when normoxia is restored, which is consistent with the occurrence of synaptic plasticity in acclimatized animals. Recently, we demonstrated that antagonism of individual glutamate receptor types (GluRs) within the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) modifies this plasticity and VAH (J. Physiol. 592(8):1839-1856); however, the effects of combined GluR antagonism remain unknown in awake rats. To evaluate this, we exposed rats to room air or chronic sustained hypobaric hypoxia (CSH, PiO2 = 70 Torr) for 7-9 days. On the experimental day, we microinjected artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF: sham) and then a "cocktail" of the GluR antagonists MK-801 and DNQX into the NTS. The location of injection sites in the NTS was confirmed by glutamate injections on a day before the experiment and with histology following the experiment. Ventilation was measured in awake, unrestrained rats breathing normoxia or acute hypoxia (10% O2) in 15-min intervals using barometric pressure plethysmography. In control (CON) rats, acute hypoxia increased ventilation; NTS microinjections of GluR antagonists, but not ACSF, significantly decreased ventilation and breathing frequency in acute hypoxia but not normoxia (P < 0.05). CSH increased ventilation in hypoxia and acute normoxia. In CSH-conditioned rats, GluR antagonists in the NTS significantly decreased ventilation in normoxia and breathing frequency in hypoxia. A persistent HVR after combined GluR blockade in the NTS contrasts with the effect of individual GluR blockade and also with results in anesthetized rats. Our findings support the hypotheses that GluRs in the NTS contribute to, but cannot completely explain, VAH in awake rats
Control-system techniques for improved departure/spin resistance for fighter aircraft
Some fundamental information on control system effects on controllability of highly maneuverable aircraft at high angles of attack are summarized as well as techniques for enhancing fighter aircraft departure/spin resistance using control system design. The discussion includes: (1) a brief review of pertinent high angle of attack phenomena including aerodynamics, inertia coupling, and kinematic coupling; (2) effects of conventional stability augmentation systems at high angles of attack; (3) high angle of attack control system concepts designed to enhance departure/spin resistance; and (4) the outlook for applications of these concepts to future fighters, particularly those designs which incorporate relaxed static stability
LOX/hydrocarbon rocket engine analytical design methodology development and validation. Volume 2: Appendices
This final report includes a discussion of the work accomplished during the period from Dec. 1988 through Nov. 1991. The objective of the program was to assemble existing performance and combustion stability models into a usable design methodology capable of designing and analyzing high-performance and stable LOX/hydrocarbon booster engines. The methodology was then used to design a validation engine. The capabilities and validity of the methodology were demonstrated using this engine in an extensive hot fire test program. The engine used LOX/RP-1 propellants and was tested over a range of mixture ratios, chamber pressures, and acoustic damping device configurations. This volume contains time domain and frequency domain stability plots which indicate the pressure perturbation amplitudes and frequencies from approximately 30 tests of a 50K thrust rocket engine using LOX/RP-1 propellants over a range of chamber pressures from 240 to 1750 psia with mixture ratios of from 1.2 to 7.5. The data is from test configurations which used both bitune and monotune acoustic cavities and from tests with no acoustic cavities. The engine had a length of 14 inches and a contraction ratio of 2.0 using a 7.68 inch diameter injector. The data was taken from both stable and unstable tests. All combustion instabilities were spontaneous in the first tangential mode. Although stability bombs were used and generated overpressures of approximately 20 percent, no tests were driven unstable by the bombs. The stability instrumentation included six high-frequency Kistler transducers in the combustion chamber, a high-frequency Kistler transducer in each propellant manifold, and tri-axial accelerometers. Performance data is presented, both characteristic velocity efficiencies and energy release efficiencies, for those tests of sufficient duration to record steady state values
Pilot Human Factors in Stall/Spin Accidents of Supersonic Fighter Aircraft
A study has been made of pilot human factors related to stall/spin accidents of supersonic fighter aircraft. The military specifications for flight at high angles of attack are examined. Several pilot human factors problems related to stall/spin are discussed. These problems include (1) unsatisfactory nonvisual warning cues; (2) the inability of the pilot to quickly determine if the aircraft is spinning out of control, or to recognize the type of spin; (3) the inability of the pilot to decide on and implement the correct spin recovery technique; (4) the inability of the pilot to move, caused by high angular rotation; and (5) the tendency of pilots to wait too long in deciding to abandon the irrecoverable aircraft. Psycho-physiological phenomena influencing pilot's behavior in stall/spin situations include (1) channelization of sensory inputs, (2) limitations in precisely controlling several muscular inputs, (3) inaccurate judgment of elapsed time, and (4) disorientation of vestibulo-ocular inputs. Results are given of pilot responses to all these problems in the F14A, F16/AB, and F/A-18A aircraft. The use of departure spin resistance and automatic spin prevention systems incorporated on recent supersonic fighters are discussed. These systems should help to improve the stall/spin accident record with some compromise in maneuverability
Coherent coupling between surface plasmons and excitons in semiconductor nanocrystals
We present an experimental demonstration of strong coupling between a surface
plasmon propagating on a planar silver substrate, and the lowest excited state
of CdSe nanocrystals. Variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements
demonstrated the formation of plasmon-exciton mixed states, characterized by a
Rabi splitting of 82 meV at room temperature. Such a coherent
interaction has the potential for the development of plasmonic non-linear
devices, and furthermore, this system is akin to those studied in cavity
quantum electrodynamics, thus offering the possibility to study the regime of
strong light-matter coupling in semiconductor nanocrystals at easily accessible

Coulomb gap in the one-particle density of states in three-dimensional systems with localized electrons
The one-particle density of states (1P-DOS) in a system with localized
electron states vanishes at the Fermi level due to the Coulomb interaction
between electrons. Derivation of the Coulomb gap uses stability criteria of the
ground state. The simplest criterion is based on the excitonic interaction of
an electron and a hole and leads to a quadratic 1P-DOS in the three-dimensional
(3D) case. In 3D, higher stability criteria, including two or more electrons,
were predicted to exponentially deplete the 1P-DOS at energies close enough to
the Fermi level. In this paper we show that there is a range of intermediate
energies where this depletion is strongly compensated by the excitonic
interaction between single-particle excitations, so that the crossover from
quadratic to exponential behavior of the 1P-DOS is retarded. This is one of the
reasons why such exponential depletion was never seen in computer simulations.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
Out of equilibrium electronic transport properties of a misfit cobaltite thin film
We report on transport measurements in a thin film of the 2D misfit Cobaltite
. Dc magnetoresistance measurements obey the modified
variable range hopping law expected for a soft Coulomb gap. When the sample is
cooled down, we observe large telegraphic-like fluctuations. At low
temperature, these slow fluctuations have non Gaussian statistics, and are
stable under a large magnetic field. These results suggest that the low
temperature state is a glassy electronic state. Resistance relaxation and
memory effects of pure magnetic origin are also observed, but without aging
phenomena. This indicates that these magnetic effects are not glassy-like and
