Accurate and precise photometric redshifts (photo-z's) of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can enable the use of SNe Ia, measured only with photometry, to probe cosmology. This dramatically increases the science return of supernova surveys planned for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). In this paper we describe a significantly improved version of the simple analytic photo-z estimator proposed by Wang (2007) and further developed by Wang, Narayan, and Wood-Vasey (2007). We apply it to 55,422 simulated SNe Ia generated using the SNANA package with the LSST filters. We find that the estimated errors on the photo-z's, \sigma_{z_{phot}}/(1+z_{phot}), can be used as filters to produce a set of photo-z's that have high precision, accuracy, and purity. Using SN Ia colors as well as SN Ia peak magnitude in the i band, we obtain a set of photo-z's with 2 percent accuracy (with \sigma(z_{phot}-z_{spec})/(1+z_{spec}) = 0.02), a bias in z_{phot} (the mean of z_{phot}-z_{spec}) of -9 X 10^{-5}, and an outlier fraction (with |(z_{phot}-z_{spec})/(1+z_{spec})|>0.1) of 0.23 percent, with the requirement that \sigma_{z_{phot}}/(1+z_{phot})<0.01. Using the SN Ia colors only, we obtain a set of photo-z's with similar quality by requiring that \sigma_{z_{phot}}/(1+z_{phot})<0.007; this leads to a set of photo-z's with 2 percent accuracy, a bias in z_{phot} of 5.9 X 10^{-4}, and an outlier fraction of 0.32 percent.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. Despite increasing literature that confirms the therapeutic benefits of music, metal music is still stigmatized as sexist, masculine, and detrimental to its fans. Psychology researchers have generally focused on trying to identify the negative effects of metal music (Snell & Hodgetts, 2007), and have succeeded in finding links between metal music and aggression (Rubin, West, & Mitchell, 2001) and suicide (Lacourse, Claes, & Villeneuve, 2001) for example. Most of the research has focused on male fans as well, with little research from the perspective of female metal fans and musicians (Diehl, 2013). Hence, we conducted a qualitative study focused on female metal fans perceived positive effects of metal music for its female fans. An online survey, distributed through social media, was completed by a purposeful sample of 224 female participants (aged 18-65+) from around the world who described critical incidents specific to metal music and its positive impact in their lives. Several key themes were identified through analyses: (a) creation and awareness of identity, (b) forging and strengthening relationship, (c) provision of life experience and knowledge; and (d) helping with emotions. Implications for counselling practice and recommendations for future research are made

Medication errors are the most common type of preventable error. Bar-code medication administration (BCMA) technology was designed to reduce medication administration errors. Poor system design, implementation and workarounds remain a cause of errors. This paper reviews the literature on BCMA, identifies a gap in the findings and identifies three evidence based practices that could be used to improve system implementation and reduce error. The literature review identified that Bar-code medication administration and system workarounds are well documented and affect patient safety. Based on the critical analysis of 10 studies, we identified gaps in the standardization of BCMA planning, implementation, and sustainability. The themes that emerged from the literature were poor BCMA design and implementation that resulted in workarounds. The three evidence based strategies proposed to address this gap are, evidence based standardization in planning and implementation, the identification and elimination of workarounds and hard wiring. An evidence based checklist evaluates compliance with standard procedures. The LEAN model of Jodoka is used to assure adaptation of the machine to human workflow. Direct observation provides valuable workflow assessment. An effective BCMA implementation involves careful system design, identification of workflow issues which cause workarounds, and adapting the machine to nursing needs

Assessing flood risk for a rural detention area

International audienceFlood detention areas serve the primary purpose of controlled water storage during large flood events in order to decrease the flood risk downstream along the river. These areas are often used for agricultural production. While various damage estimation methods exist for urban areas, there are only a few, most often simpler approaches for loss estimation in rural areas. The loss assessment can provide an estimate of the financial provisions required for the farmers' compensation (e.g., in the context of cost-benefit analyses of detention measures). Flood risk is a combination of potential damage and probability of flooding. Losses in agricultural areas exhibit a strong seasonal pattern, and the flooding probability also has a seasonal variation. In the present study, flood risk is assessed for a planned detention area alongside the Elbe River in Germany based on two loss and probability estimation approaches of different time frames, namely a monthly and an annual approach. The results show that the overall potential damage in the proposed detention area amounts to approximately 40 000 ? a?1, with approximately equal losses for each of the main land uses, agriculture and road infrastructure. A sensitivity analysis showed that the probability of flooding (i.e., the frequency of operation of the detention area) has the largest impact on the overall flood risk

The Truncated Moment Problem for Unital Commutative R-Algebras

Let A be a unital commutative R-algebra, B a linear subspace of A and K a closed subset of the character space of A. For a linear functional L: B --> R, we investigate conditions under which L admits an integral representation with respect to a positive Radon measure supported in K. When A is equipped with a submultiplicative seminorm, we employ techniques from the theory of positive extensions of linear functionals to prove a criterion for the existence of such an integral representation for L. When no topology is prescribed on A, we identify suitable assumptions on B, A, L and K which allow us to construct a seminormed structure on A, so as to exploit our previous result to get an integral representation for L. We then use our main theorems to obtain, as applications, several well known results on the classical truncated moment problem, the moment problem for point processes, and the subnormal completion problem for 2-variable weighted shifts

Estudo para determinação da frequência de deformidade do mento em Chironomus sancticaroli (Diptera: chironomidae) em cultura de laboratório

The midge Chironomus sancticaroli (Diptera: Chironomidae) has been used in ecotoxicological tests because it is sensitive to a variety of inorganic pollutants. Among the parameters used to evaluate the toxicity of a substance is the frequency of mentum deformity, which is part of the oral system of this organism. However, there is still no consensus on the baseline level (percentage) of acceptable deformities in laboratory cultures not exposed to pollutants. The determination of this variable is important to ensure the validity of bioassays and to compare cultures from different research and teaching institutions. Once this value is established, it will also be used to monitor the quality of organisms cultured, since factors such as inbreeding could increase the frequency of mentum deformity. Thus, the objective of this study was to quantify the percentage of mentum deformity in the fourth instar of C. sancticaroli larvae from the culture of the Laboratory of Aquatic Ecosystems, at Embrapa Meio Ambiente. The average frequency of mentum deformity obtained was 6,63%. It is believed that factors such as the renewal of the culture with the inclusion of spawns from the laboratories of other institutions, as well as the control of the quality of the dilution water and the sediment of the breeding may have contributed to a low frequency of mentum deformity of the culture observed in this study.142sensível a uma variedade de poluentes inorgânicos.
