Using Semantic Web technologies in the development of data warehouses: A systematic mapping
The exploration and use of Semantic Web technologies have attracted considerable attention from researchers examining data warehouse (DW) development. However, the impact of this research and the maturity level of its results are still unclear. The objective of this study is to examine recently published research articles that take into account the use of Semantic Web technologies in the DW arena with the intention of summarizing their results, classifying their contributions to the field according to publication type, evaluating the maturity level of the results, and identifying future research challenges. Three main conclusions were derived from this study: (a) there is a major technological gap that inhibits the wide adoption of Semantic Web technologies in the business domain;(b) there is limited evidence that the results of the analyzed studies are applicable and transferable to industrial use; and (c) interest in researching the relationship between DWs and Semantic Web has decreased because new paradigms, such as linked open data, have attracted the interest of researchers.This study was supported by the Universidad de La Frontera, Chile, PROY. Drug Absorption Modeling as a Tool to Define the Strategy in Clinical Formulation Development
The purpose of this mini review is to discuss the use of physiologically-based drug absorption modeling to guide the formulation development. Following an introduction to drug absorption modeling, this article focuses on the preclinical formulation development. Case studies are presented, where the emphasis is not only the prediction of absolute exposure values, but also their change with altered input values. Sensitivity analysis of technologically relevant parameters, like the drug’s particle size, dose and solubility, is presented as the basis to define the clinical formulation strategy. Taking the concept even one step further, the article shows how the entire design space for drug absorption can be constructed. This most accurate prediction level is mainly foreseen once clinical data is available and an example is provided using mefenamic acid as a model drug. Physiologically-based modeling is expected to be more often used by formulators in the future. It has the potential to become an indispensable tool to guide the formulation development of challenging drugs, which will help minimize both risks and costs of formulation development
Peritoneal Cavity Regulatory B Cells (B10 Cells) Modulate IFN- +CD4+ T Cell Numbers during Colitis Development in Mice
The spleen regulatory B cell subset with the functional capacity to express IL-10 (B10 cells) modulates both immune responses and autoimmune disease severity. However, the peritoneal cavity also contains relatively high frequencies of functionally-defined IL-10-competent B10 cells. In this study, peritoneal cavity B10 cells shared similar cell surface phenotypes with their spleen counterparts. However, peritoneal cavity B10 cells were 10-fold more frequent among B cells than occurred within the spleen, intestinal track or mesenteric lymph nodes and were present at higher proportions among the phenotypically-defined peritoneal B1a>B1b>B2 cell subpopulations. The development or localization of B10 cells within the peritoneal cavity was not dependent on the presence of commensal microbiota, T cells, IL-10 or B10 cell IL-10 production, or differences between their fetal liver or adult bone marrow progenitor cell origins. The BCR repertoire of peritoneal cavity B10 cells was diverse, as occurs in the spleen, and predominantly included germline-encoded VH and VL regions commonly found in either the conventional or B1 B cell compartments. Thereby, the capacity to produce IL-10 appears to be an intrinsic functional property acquired by clonally diverse B cells. Importantly, IL-10 production by peritoneal cavity B cells significantly reduced disease severity in spontaneous and induced models of colitis by regulating neutrophil infiltration, colitogenic CD4+ T cell activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine production during colitis onset. Thus, the numerically small B10 cell subset within the peritoneal cavity has regulatory function and is important for maintaining homeostasis within gastrointestinal tissues and the immune system
An integrated open-coastal biogeochemistry, ecosystem and biodiversity observatory of the eastern Mediterranean – the Cretan Sea component of the POSEIDON system
There is a general scarcity of oceanic observations that
concurrently examine air–sea interactions, coastal–open-ocean processes and
physical–biogeochemical processes, in appropriate spatiotemporal
scales and under continuous, long-term data acquisition schemes. In the
Mediterranean Sea, the resulting knowledge gaps and observing challenges
increase due to its oligotrophic character, especially in the eastern part
of the basin. The oligotrophic open Cretan Sea's biogeochemistry is
considered to be representative of a greater Mediterranean area up to
106 km2, and understanding its features may be useful on even
larger oceanic scales, since the Mediterranean Sea has been considered a
miniature model of the global ocean. The spatiotemporal coverage of biogeochemical (BGC)
observations in the Cretan Sea has progressively increased over the last
decades, especially since the creation of the POSEIDON observing system,
which has adopted a multiplatform, multivariable approach, supporting BGC
data acquisition. The current POSEIDON system's status includes open and
coastal sea fixed platforms, a Ferrybox (FB) system and Bio-Argo autonomous
floats that remotely deliver fluorescence as a proxy of chlorophyll-a
(Chl-a), O2, pH and pCO2 data, as well as BGC-related physical
variables. Since 2010, the list has been further expanded to other BGC
(nutrients, vertical particulate matter fluxes), ecosystem and biodiversity
(from viruses up to zooplankton) variables, thanks to the addition of
sediment traps, frequent research vessel (R/V) visits for seawater–plankton
sampling and an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) delivering
information on macrozooplankton–micronekton vertical migration (in the
epipelagic to mesopelagic layer). Gliders and drifters are the new (currently under
integration to the existing system) platforms, supporting BGC monitoring.
Land-based facilities, such as data centres, technical support
infrastructure, calibration laboratory and mesocosms, support and give added
value to the observatory. The data gathered from these platforms are used to
improve the quality of the BGC-ecosystem model predictions, which have
recently incorporated atmospheric nutrient deposition processes and
assimilation of satellite Chl-a data. Besides addressing open scientific
questions at regional and international levels, examples of which are
presented, the observatory provides user-oriented services to marine
policy makers and the society, and is a technological test bed for new
and/or cost-efficient BGC sensor technology and marine equipment. It is part
of European and international observing programs, playing a key role in
regional data handling and participating in harmonization and best practices
procedures. Future expansion plans consider the evolving scientific and
society priorities, balanced with sustainable management.</p
Social Participation Network: Linking things, services and people to support participatory processes
International audienceDigital technologies have impacted almost every aspect of our society, including how people participate in activities that matter to them. Indeed, digital participation allows people to be involved in different societal activities at an unprecedented scale through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Still, enabling participation at scale requires making it seamless for people to: interact with a variety of software platforms, get information from connected physical objects and software services, and communicate and collaborate with their peers. Toward this objective, this paper introduces and formalizes the concept of Social Participation Network, which captures the diverse participation relationships-between people, digital services and connected things-supporting participatory processes. The paper further presents the design of an associated online service to support the creation and management of Social Participation Networks. The design advocates the instantiation of Social Participation Networks within distinct participation contexts-spanning, e.g., private institutions, neighbor communities, and governmental institutions-so that the participants' information and contributions to participation remain isolated and private within the given context
Wikipedia Information Flow Analysis Reveals the Scale-Free Architecture of the Semantic Space
In this paper we extract the topology of the semantic space in its encyclopedic acception, measuring the semantic flow between the different entries of the largest modern encyclopedia, Wikipedia, and thus creating a directed complex network of semantic flows. Notably at the percolation threshold the semantic space is characterised by scale-free behaviour at different levels of complexity and this relates the semantic space to a wide range of biological, social and linguistics phenomena. In particular we find that the cluster size distribution, representing the size of different semantic areas, is scale-free. Moreover the topology of the resulting semantic space is scale-free in the connectivity distribution and displays small-world properties. However its statistical properties do not allow a classical interpretation via a generative model based on a simple multiplicative process. After giving a detailed description and interpretation of the topological properties of the semantic space, we introduce a stochastic model of content-based network, based on a copy and mutation algorithm and on the Heaps' law, that is able to capture the main statistical properties of the analysed semantic space, including the Zipf's law for the word frequency distribution
