Weak KAM aspects of convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations with Neumann type boundary conditions
We establish the stability under the formations of infimum and of convex
combinations of subsolutions of convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations, some
comparison and existence results for convex and coercive Hamilton-Jacobi
equations with the Neumann type boundary condition as well as existence results
for the Skorokhod problem. We define the Aubry-Mather set associated with the
Neumann type boundary problem and establish some properties of the Aubry-Mather
set including the existence results for the ``calibrated'' extremals for the
corresponding action functional (or variational problem).Comment: 39 pages, 1 figur
The performance of thin NaI(Tl) scintillator plate for dark matter search
A thin (0.05cm) and wide area (5cmX5cm) NaI(Tl) scintillator was developed.
The performance of the thin NaI(Tl) plate, energy resolution, single
photoelectron energy and position sensitivity were tested. An excellent energy
resolution of 20% (FWHM) at 60keV was obtained. The single photoelectron energy
was calculated to be approximately 0.42 0.02keV. Position information in the
5cmx5cm area of the detector was also obtained by analyzing the ratio of the
number of photons collected at opposite ends of the detector. The position
resolution was obtained to be 1cm (FWHM) in the 5cmx5cm area.Comment: 10 pages. Accepted to Journal of Physical Society of Japa

Oncostatin M induces heat hypersensitivity by gp130-dependent sensitization of TRPV1 in sensory neurons
Oncostatin M (OSM) is a member of the interleukin-6 cytokine family and regulates eg. gene activation, cell survival, proliferation and differentiation. OSM binds to a receptor complex consisting of the ubiquitously expressed signal transducer gp130 and the ligand binding OSM receptor subunit, which is expressed on a specific subset of primary afferent neurons. In the present study, the effect of OSM on heat nociception was investigated in nociceptor-specific gp130 knock-out (SNS-gp130-/-) and gp130 floxed (gp130fl/fl) mice
WIMPs search by means of the highly segmented scintillator
The highly sensitive method to search for WIMPs dark matter particles is
proposed. An array of thin NaI(Tl) plate has the great selectivity for
distinguishing the WIMPs events and background ones. The principle of signal
selection for WIMPs is described. The high sensitivity for SD (spin-dependent)
type WIMPs is expected by applying multi-layer system of NaI(Tl) detector.Comment: 11 pages, added some sentences to make the arguments clea
1+1 dimensional QCD with fundamental bosons and fermions
We analyze the properties of mesons in 1+1 dimensional QCD with bosonic and
fermionic ``quarks'' in the large \nc limit. We study the spectrum in detail
and show that it is impossible to obtain massless mesons including boson
constituents in this model. We quantitatively show how the QCD mass inequality
is realized in two dimensional QCD. We find that the mass inequality is close
to being an equality even when the quarks are light. Methods for obtaining the
properties of ``mesons'' formed from boson and/or fermion constituents are
formulated in an explicit manner convenient for further study. We also analyze
how the physical properties of the mesons such as confinement and asymptotic
freedom are realized.Comment: 20 pages, harvmac, 5 figure
Relativistic quantum dynamics in strong fields: Photon emission from heavy, few-electron ions
Recent progress in the study of the photon emission from highly-charged heavy
ions is reviewed. These investigations show that high- ions provide a unique
tool for improving the understanding of the electron-electron and
electron-photon interaction in the presence of strong fields. Apart from the
bound-state transitions, which are accurately described in the framework of
Quantum Electrodynamics, much information has been obtained also from the
radiative capture of (quasi-) free electrons by high- ions. Many features in
the observed spectra hereby confirm the inherently relativistic behavior of
even the simplest compound quantum systems in Nature.Comment: Version 18/11/0
Expression of Foxp3 in colorectal cancer but not in Treg cells correlates with disease progression in patients with colorectal cancer
Background: Regulatory T cells (Treg) expressing the transcription factor forkhead-box protein P3 (Foxp3) have been identified to counteract anti-tumor immune responses during tumor progression. Besides, Foxp3 presentation by cancer cells itself may also allow them to evade from effector T-cell responses, resulting in a survival benefit of the tumor. For colorectal cancer (CRC) the clinical relevance of Foxp3 has not been evaluated in detail. Therefore the aim of this study was to study its impact in colorectal cancer (CRC).
Methods and Findings: Gene and protein analysis of tumor tissues from patients with CRC was performed to quantify the expression of Foxp3 in tumor infiltrating Treg and colon cancer cells. The results were correlated with clinicopathological parameters and patients overall survival. Serial morphological analysis demonstrated Foxp3 to be expressed in cancer cells. High Foxp3 expression of the cancer cells was associated with poor prognosis compared to patients with low Foxp3 expression. In contrast, low and high Foxp3 level in tumor infiltrating Treg cells demonstrated no significant differences in overall patient survival.
Conclusions: Our findings strongly suggest that Foxp3 expression mediated by cancer cells rather than by Treg cells contribute to disease progression
CIDACS-RL: a novel indexing search and scoring-based record linkage system for huge datasets with high accuracy and scalability
Background: Record linkage is the process of identifying and combining records about the same individual from two or more different datasets. While there are many open source and commercial data linkage tools, the volume and complexity of currently available datasets for linkage pose a huge challenge; hence, designing an efficient linkage tool with reasonable accuracy and scalability is required. Methods: We developed CIDACS-RL (Centre for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health – Record Linkage), a novel iterative deterministic record linkage algorithm based on a combination of indexing search and scoring algorithms (provided by Apache Lucene). We described how the algorithm works and compared its performance with four open source linkage tools (AtyImo, Febrl, FRIL and RecLink) in terms of sensitivity and positive predictive value using gold standard dataset. We also evaluated its accuracy and scalability using a case-study and its scalability and execution time using a simulated cohort in serial (single core) and multi-core (eight core) computation settings. Results: Overall, CIDACS-RL algorithm had a superior performance: positive predictive value (99.93% versus AtyImo 99.30%, RecLink 99.5%, Febrl 98.86%, and FRIL 96.17%) and sensitivity (99.87% versus AtyImo 98.91%, RecLink 73.75%, Febrl 90.58%, and FRIL 74.66%). In the case study, using a ROC curve to choose the most appropriate cut-off value (0.896), the obtained metrics were: sensitivity = 92.5% (95% CI 92.07–92.99), specificity = 93.5% (95% CI 93.08–93.8) and area under the curve (AUC) = 97% (95% CI 96.97–97.35). The multi-core computation was about four times faster (150 seconds) than the serial setting (550 seconds) when using a dataset of 20 million records. Conclusion: CIDACS-RL algorithm is an innovative linkage tool for huge datasets, with higher accuracy, improved scalability, and substantially shorter execution time compared to other existing linkage tools. In addition, CIDACS-RL can be deployed on standard computers without the need for high-speed processors and distributed infrastructures
