    Development of a low profile laser Doppler probe for monitoring perfusion at the patient – mattress interface

    The clinical importance of pressure ulcers is reviewed confirming the need for continuous monitoring of skin blood perfusion at the patient – mattress interface. The design of a low profile (H≈1mm) laser Doppler probe is then described together with the experimental setup used for evaluation. The results show that the performance of the new sensor does not vary significantly from that of currently available probes over a wide range of operating parameters. The authors conclude that the sensor design provides a low cost perfusion monitoring solution with potential to significantly reduce the risk of bed sores in hospital patients

    Dynamic general equilibrium analysis of improved weed management in Australia's winter cropping systems

    A recent analysis indicated that the direct financial cost of weeds to Australia’s winter grain sectorwas approximately A1.2bnin19981999.Costsofthismagnituderepresentalargerecurringproductivitylossinanagriculturalsectorthatissufficienttoimpactsignificantlyonregionaleconomies.Usingamultiregionaldynamiccomputablegeneralequilibriummodel,wesimulatethegeneralequilibriumeffectsofahypotheticalsuccessfulcampaigntoreducetheeconomiccostsofweeds.WeassumethatanadditionalA1.2bn in 1998–1999. Costs of thismagnitude represent a large recurring productivity loss in an agricultural sector that is sufficient to impact significantly on regional economies.Using amulti-regional dynamic computable general equilibrium model, we simulate the general equilibrium effects of a hypothetical successful campaign to reduce the economic costs of weeds. We assume that an additional 50m of R&D spread over five years is targeted at reducing the additional costs and reduced yields arising from weeds in various broadacre crops. Following this R&D effort, one-tenth of the losses arising from weeds is temporarily eliminated, with a diminishing benefit in succeeding years. At the national level, there is a welfare increase of $700m in discounted net present value terms.     Energy loss rates of two-dimensional hole gases in inverted Si/Si0.8Ge0.2 heterostructures

    We have investigated the energy loss rate of hot holes as a function of carrier temperature TC in p-type inverted modulation-doped (MD) Si/SiGe heterostructures over the carrier sheet density range (3.5–13)×1011 cm–2, at lattice temperatures of 0.34 and 1.8 K. It is found that the energy loss rate (ELR) depends significantly upon the carrier sheet density, n2D. Such an n2D dependence of ELR has not been observed previously in p-type SiGe MD structures. The extracted effective mass decreases as n2D increases, which is in agreement with recent measurements on a gated inverted sample. It is shown that the energy relaxation of the two-dimensional hole gases is dominated by unscreened acoustic phonon scattering and a deformation potential of 3.0±0.4 eV is deduced

    Stigmatising views towards individuals with eating disorders: trends and associations from 1998 to 2008 using a repeated cross-sectional design

    Background Eating disorders are stigmatised. Little is known about whether stigma has decreased over time and which groups hold more stigmatising beliefs. Aims To explore whether stigma towards eating disorders has changed between 1998 and 2008 and whether it varies by sociodemographic characteristics. Method We used the Office for National Statistics Omnibus surveys 1998 and 2008. As outcomes, we selected four questions eliciting participants' views on issues of blame and ability to recover, and compared their mean scores across eating disorders, depression and alcohol dependence in both years. We used multivariable linear regressions to investigate associations between sociodemographic characteristics and each stigma domain. Results In total, 2720 participants had data on all variables of interest. Compared with 1998, in 2008 stigmatising views towards eating disorders improved. In both years, participants believed it was easier to recover from eating disorders than depression or alcohol dependence. Respondents believed people with eating disorders were more to blame for their condition than those with depression, but less than those with alcohol dependence. Men, those with less formal education, and those from ethnic minority backgrounds were more likely to place greater blame on individuals for their mental illness. Men were more likely than women to think it was possible to recover from an eating disorder. Conclusions Stigmatising attitudes towards people with eating disorders have improved over time, but are still greater than those observed for other mental illnesses. Improving eating disorder mental health literacy could help to reduce these negative views and lead to improved quality of life, greater help-seeking and better prognosis

    Spectral and growth characteristics of willows and maize in soil contaminated with a layer of crude or refined oil

    Remote sensing holds great potential for detecting stress in vegetation caused by hydro-carbons, but we need to better understand the effects of hydrocarbons on plant growth and specific spectral expression. Willow (Salix viminalis var. Tora) cuttings and maize (Zea mays var. Lapriora) seedlings were grown in pots of loam soil containing a hydrocarbon-contaminated layer at the base of the pot (crude or refined oil) at concentrations of 0.5, 5, or 50 g·kg−1 . Chlorophyll concen-tration, biomass, and growth of plants were determined through destructive and nondestructive sampling, whilst reflectance measurements were made using portable hyperspectral spectrometers. All biophysical (chlorophyll concentration and growth) variables decreased in the presence of high concentrations of hydrocarbons, but at lower concentrations an increase in growth and chlorophyll were often observed with respect to nonpolluted plants, suggesting a biphasic response to hydrocarbon presence. Absorption features were identified that related strongly to pigment concentration and biomass. Variations in absorption feature characteristics (band depth, band area, and band width) were dependent upon the hydrocarbon concentration and type, and showed the same biphasic pattern noted in the biophysical measurements. This study demonstrates that the response of plants to hydrocarbon pollution varies according to hydrocarbon concentration and that remote sensing has the potential to both detect and monitor the variable impacts of pollution in the landscape.Atmospheric Remote Sensin
