    Interactivity in Latin American digital journalism. An analysis of the main digital media of Colombia, Mexico and Ecuador (2016)

    Introduction: Latin America, in general terms, is a continent with several contextual levels, which depend on historic, economic, political and social characteristics. Despite all this, there are aspects -such as digital divide- that occur again, to a greater or lesser extent, in the different Latin American countries. This digital divide promotes partially disconnected -and thus, invisible- societies, and tends to slow down possibilities of innovation and development of digital journalism. Methodology: In this study, and from the methodology proposed by Rodríguez, Codina and Pedraza (2012), we have analysed the management of interactivity in the main digital media in Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador in 2016. Results and conclusions: The results show a generally low implementation of interactivity options in digital ecosystems in these three Latin American countries. © 2017, University of La Laguna.     Global mRNA expression analysis in myosin II deficient strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae reveals an impairment of cell integrity functions

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The <it>Saccharomyces cerevisiae MYO1 </it>gene encodes the myosin II heavy chain (Myo1p), a protein required for normal cytokinesis in budding yeast. Myo1p deficiency in yeast (<it>myo1Δ</it>) causes a cell separation defect characterized by the formation of attached cells, yet it also causes abnormal budding patterns, formation of enlarged and elongated cells, increased osmotic sensitivity, delocalized chitin deposition, increased chitin synthesis, and hypersensitivity to the chitin synthase III inhibitor Nikkomycin Z. To determine how differential expression of genes is related to these diverse cell wall phenotypes, we analyzed the global mRNA expression profile of <it>myo1Δ </it>strains.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Global mRNA expression profiles of <it>myo1Δ </it>strains and their corresponding wild type controls were obtained by hybridization to yeast oligonucleotide microarrays. Results for selected genes were confirmed by real time RT-PCR. A total of 547 differentially expressed genes (p ≤ 0.01) were identified with 263 up regulated and 284 down regulated genes in the <it>myo1Δ </it>strains. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed the significant over-representation of genes in the protein biosynthesis and stress response categories. The <it>SLT2/MPK1 </it>gene was up regulated in the microarray, and a <it>myo1Δslt2Δ </it>double mutant was non-viable. Overexpression of ribosomal protein genes <it>RPL30 </it>and <it>RPS31 </it>suppressed the hypersensitivity to Nikkomycin Z and increased the levels of phosphorylated Slt2p in <it>myo1Δ </it>strains. Increased levels of phosphorylated Slt2p were also observed in wild type strains under these conditions.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Following this analysis of global mRNA expression in yeast <it>myo1Δ </it>strains, we conclude that 547 genes were differentially regulated in <it>myo1Δ </it>strains and that the stress response and protein biosynthesis gene categories were coordinately regulated in this mutant. The <it>SLT2/MPK1 </it>gene was confirmed to be essential for <it>myo1Δ </it>strain viability, supporting that the up regulated stress response genes are regulated by the <it>PKC1 </it>cell integrity pathway. Suppression of Nikkomycin Z hypersensitivity together with Slt2p phosphorylation was caused by the overexpression of ribosomal protein genes <it>RPL30 </it>and <it>RPS31</it>. These ribosomal protein mRNAs were down regulated in the <it>myo1Δ </it>arrays, suggesting that down regulation of ribosomal biogenesis may affect cell integrity in <it>myo1Δ </it>strains.</p

    Electronic Developments for the Hades RPC Wall: Overview and Progress

    This contribution presents the current status and progress of the electronics developed for the Resistive Plate Chamber detector of HADES. This new detector for the time-of-flight detection system will contain more than 1000 RPC modules, covering a total active area of around 7 m2. The Front-End electronics consist of custom-made boards that exploit the benefit of the use of commercial components to achieve time resolutions below 100 ps. The Readout electronics, also custom-made, is a multipurpose board providing a 128- channel Time to Digital Converter (TDC) based on the HPTDC chip

    Psycho-Neuro-Endocrine-Immunological Basis of the Placebo Effect: Potential Applications beyond Pain Therapy

    The placebo effect can be defined as the improvement of symptoms in a patient after the administration of an innocuous substance in a context that induces expectations regarding its effects. During recent years, it has been discovered that the placebo response not only has neurobiological functions on analgesia, but that it is also capable of generating effects on the immune and endocrine systems. The possible integration of changes in different systems of the organism could favor the well-being of the individuals and go hand in hand with conventional treatment for multiple diseases. In this sense, classic conditioning and setting expectations stand out as psychological mechanisms implicated in the placebo effect. Recent advances in neuroimaging studies suggest a relationship between the placebo response and the opioid, cannabinoid, and monoaminergic systems. Likewise, a possible immune response conditioned by the placebo effect has been reported. There is evidence of immune suppression conditioned through the insular cortex and the amygdala, with noradrenalin as the responsible neurotransmitter. Finally, a conditioned response in the secretion of different hormones has been determined in different studies; however, the molecular mechanisms involved are not entirely known. Beyond studies about its mechanism of action, the placebo effect has proved to be useful in the clinical setting with promising results in the management of neurological, psychiatric, and immunologic disorders. However, more research is needed to better characterize its potential use. This review integrates current knowledge about the psycho-neuro-endocrine-immune basis of the placebo effect and its possible clinical applications

    Histological caracterization of experimental urethroplasties with oral mucosa

    Introducción: Diferentes técnicas quirúrgicas se han utilizado para la reconstrucción uretral, entre ellas la utilización de injertos de mucosa oral. El objetivo del trabajo es estudiar las modificaciones estructurales y ultraestructurales en los tejidos injertados sometidos a condiciones ambientales diferentes a las del tejido original. Material y métodos: 20 ratas Wistar macho de 300 g sometidas a anestesia general. Al grupo control se seccionó longitudinalmente la uretra peneana suturándola posteriormente. Grupos estudio, se realizó uretroplastia con injertos de mucosa oral autóloga y análisis (fijación con formaldehido y tinción H&E) tras sacrificio a los 7, 14 y 30 días. Resultados: La técnica empleada fue factible. El análisis de los tejidos orales implantados mostró adecuada integración, que fue completa a los 30 días presentando 5-6 capas de células planas estructura semejante al epitelio uretral. Conclusiones: La mucosa oral como injerto heterotópico se diferencia de forma adecuada generando un tejido estructuralmente similar a la uretra nativa.Introduction: Several surgical techniques have been used for urethral reconstruction. In this context, oral mucosa grafts are currently required. The aim of this study was to analyze the structural and ultraestructural modifications of grafted tissues exposed to different environmental conditions. Material and methods: 20 male Wistar rats under general anesthesia were used. Control group was set, and groups of study were set, and underwent an urethroplasty with oral mucosa graft analyzed at 7, 14 and 30 days. Results: The technique used was feasible. The analysis in oral grafted tissues showed an adequate integration level, with a shrinking interphase formation between the oral and urethral mucosa. At 30 days, the integration was completed and the oral mucosa showed 5-6 flat cell layers, with a similar structure to the urethral epithelium. Conclusions: The oral mucosa used as heterologous graft was able to differentiate in an adequate way to generate a structurally similar tissue to the native urethra.Financiado por: FIS expediente P 107061

    In-Medium Effects on K0 Mesons in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

    We present the transverse momentum spectra and rapidity distributions of π\pi^{-} and KS0^0_S in Ar+KCl reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.756 A GeV measured with the spectrometer HADES. The reconstructed KS0^0_S sample is characterized by good event statistics for a wide range in momentum and rapidity. We compare the experimental π\pi^{-} and KS0^0_S distributions to predictions by the IQMD model. The model calculations show that KS0^0_S at low tranverse momenta constitute a particularly well suited tool to investigate the kaon in-medium potential. Our KS0^0_S data suggest a strong repulsive in-medium K0^0 potential of about 40 MeV strength.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev.

    Study of the quasi-free npnpπ+πnp \to np \pi^+\pi^- reaction with a deuterium beam at 1.25 GeV/nucleon

    The tagged quasi-free npnpπ+πnp \to np\pi^+\pi^- reaction has been studied experimentally with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI at a deuteron incident beam energy of 1.25 GeV/nucleon (s\sqrt s \sim 2.42 GeV/c for the quasi-free collision). For the first time, differential distributions for π+π\pi^{+}\pi^{-} production in npnp collisions have been collected in the region corresponding to the large transverse momenta of the secondary particles. The invariant mass and angular distributions for the npnpπ+πnp\rightarrow np\pi^{+}\pi^{-} reaction are compared with different models. This comparison confirms the dominance of the tt-channel with ΔΔ\Delta\Delta contribution. It also validates the changes previously introduced in the Valencia model to describe two-pion production data in other isospin channels, although some deviations are observed, especially for the π+π\pi^{+}\pi^{-} invariant mass spectrum. The extracted total cross section is also in much better agreement with this model. Our new measurement puts useful constraints for the existence of the conjectured dibaryon resonance at mass M\sim 2.38 GeV and with width Γ\Gamma\sim 70 MeV

    Production of Sigma{\pm}pi?pK+ in p+p reactions at 3.5 GeV beam energy

    We study the production of Sigma^+-pi^+-pK^+ particle quartets in p+p reactions at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy. The data were taken with the HADES experiment at GSI. This report evaluates the contribution of resonances like Lambda(1405$, Sigma(1385)^0, Lambda(1520), Delta(1232), N^* and K^*0 to the Sigma^+- pi^-+ p K+ final state. The resulting simulation model is compared to the experimental data in several angular distributions and it shows itself as suitable to evaluate the acceptance corrections properly.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
