Two-Frequency Jahn-Teller Systems in Circuit QED
We investigate the simulation of Jahn-Teller models with two non-degenerate
vibrational modes using a circuit QED architecture. Typical Jahn-Teller systems
are anisotropic and require at least a two-frequency description. The proposed
simulator consists of two superconducting lumped-element resonators interacting
with a common flux qubit in the ultrastrong coupling regime. We translate the
circuit QED model of the system to a two-frequency Jahn-Teller Hamiltonian and
calculate its energy eigenvalues and the emission spectrum of the cavities. It
is shown that the system can be systematically tuned to an effective single
mode Hamiltonian from the two-mode model by varying the coupling strength
between the resonators. The flexibility in manipulating the parameters of the
circuit QED simulator permits isolating the effective single frequency and pure
two-frequency effects in the spectral response of Jahn-Teller systems.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, figures revise
ANALYSIS AND APPLICATION OF A NEW MARITIME CONTAINER LINE: A CASE STUDY
Marine container transportation has shown important developments during recent years. Due to increased demands for such transportation, the related companies have to enlarge their capacities and establish new lines. The most important criterion to put in a new line is the customer’s demand for such a line under marketing conditions. There would be no commercial significance for the supply if the demand is insufficient. The demand can be calculated by the present market, marketing research and cargo statistics between the two ports involved. Marketing research consists of the phases related to identify the targets and the problems, doing the research, developing the plan, collecting and analyzing the data. Another step when establishing a new line is the itinerary of the line and also which ports will be used for the line. Furthermore the present equipment of the ports, technology and possibilities play important role in the selection of the ports.
In this research the following aspects have been discussed; the factors which should be considered while the decision is being taken to establish a new container line; analysis of the operation costs; financial analyses and result for the first 5 voyages of the new container line which was established according to certain assumptions and acceptances
Flea beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Alticinae) collected by malaise trap method in Gölcük Natural Park (Isparta, Turkey), with a new record for Turkish fauna
This study is based on Alticinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) material collected by Malaise trapping which is different from other standardized collecting methods. A total of 19 flea beetle species belonging to 6 genera were collected from Gölcük Natural Park, Isparta (Turkey) during 2009. The species are listed in a table together with distributional data in Turkey. Among them, Longitarsus curtus (Allard, 1860) is recorded for the first time in Turkey. L. monticola Kutschera, 1863 and L. curtus are recently separated synonyms and thus all data referring to the distribution of both species are currently important. Hence, the zoogeographical distribution of the new record is reviewed with some remarks; habitus and genitalia are illustrated
The Role of Personality and Team-Based Product Dissection on Fixation Effects
D esign fixation has been found to be complex in its definition and expression, but it plays an important role in design idea generation. Identifying the factors that influence fixation is crucial in understanding how to enhance the design process and reduce the negative effects of fixation. One way to potentially mitigate fixation is through product dissection activities since this activity has been shown to increase creativity and design space exploration in engineering design. However, product dissection has not been studied in the context of design fixation, so it is unclear if, or how, this type of activity influences fixation. Additionally, although prior work studied product dissection in a team environment, it did not examine how individual factors such as personality attributes influence one’s involvement or exposure to the activity. Therefore, this study explores the role of product dissection and personality traits on design fixation in an engineering design classroom setting. Our results show that product dissection can reduce fixation effects when students are actively engaged in the activity. However, individual personality attributes can influence one\u27s engagement in a team-based dissection activity and thus, can serve to reduce the positive impact of product dissection. These findings demonstrate a relationship between personality and active engagement in product dissection activities, and also indicate product dissection as a way to mitigate fixation effects in engineering design education. The results from this study can be used to enhance our understanding of the design process, and help reduce fixation effects in the engineering classroom
Cyber Collaboratory-based Sustainable Design Education: A Pedagogical Framework
Educators from across the educational spectrum are faced with challenges in delivering curricula that address sustainability issues. This article introduces a cyber-based interactive e-learning platform, entitled the Sustainable Product Development Collaboratory, which is focused on addressing this need. This collaboratory aims to educate a wide spectrum of learners in the concepts of sustainable design and manufacturing by demonstrating the effects of product design on supply chain costs and environmental impacts. In this paper, we discuss the overall conceptual framework of this collaboratory along with pedagogical and instructional methodologies related to collaboratory-based sustainable design education. Finally, a sample learning module is presented along with methods for assessment of student learning and experiences with the collaboratory
Thrombotic risk assessment in antiphospholipid syndrome: do noncriteria antibodies contribute?
BACKGROUND/AIM: In this cross-sectional study, it was aimed to test the predictive value of noncriteria antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) in addition to the global antiphospholipid syndrome score (GAPSS) in predicting vascular thrombosis (VT) in a cohort of patients with APS and aPL (+) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 50 patients with primary APS, 68 with SLE/APS, and 52 with aPL (+) SLE who were classified according to VT as VT ± pregnancy morbidity (PM), PM only or aPL (+) SLE. Antiphospholipid serology consisting of lupus anticoagulant (LA), anticardiolipin (aCL) immunoglobulin G (IgG)/IgM/IgA, antibeta2 glycoprotein I (aβ2GPI) IgG/IgM/IgA, antiphosphatidylserine/prothrombin (aPS/PT) IgG/IgM and antidomain-I (aDI) IgG was determined for each patient. The GAPSS and adjusted GAPSS (aGAPSS) were calculated for each patient, as previously defined. Logistic regression analysis was carried out with thrombosis as the dependent variable and high GAPSS, aCL IgA, aβ2GPI IgA, and aDI IgG as independent variables. RESULTS: The mean GAPSS and aGAPSS of the study population were 11.6 ± 4.4 and 9.6 ± 3.8. Both the VT ± PM APS (n = 105) and PM only APS (n = 13) groups had significantly higher GAPSS and aGAPSS values compared to the aPL (+) SLE (n = 52) group. The patients with recurrent thrombosis had higher aGAPSS but not GAPSS than those with a single thrombotic event. The computed area under the receiver operating characteristic curve demonstrated that a GAPSS ≥13 and aGAPSS ≥10 had the best predictive values for thrombosis. Logistic regression analysis including a GAPSS ≥13, aCL IgA, aβ2GPI IgA, and aDI IgG showed that none of the factors other than a GAPSS ≥13 could predict thrombosis. CONCLUSION: Both the GAPSS and aGAPSS successfully predict the thrombotic risk in aPL (+) patients and aCL IgA, aβ2GPI IgA, and aDI IgG do not contribute to high a GAPSS or aGAPSS
Time-Kill Kinetics and In Vitro Antifungal Susceptibility of Non-fumigatus Aspergillus Species Isolated from Patients with Ocular Mycoses
Aspergillus species can cause ocular morbidity and blindness, and thus, appropriate antifungal therapy is needed. We investigated the in vitro activity of itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole, caspofungin, anidulafungin, and amphotericin B against 14 Aspergillus isolates obtained from patients with ocular mycoses, using the CLSI reference broth microdilution methodology. In addition, time-kill assays were performed, exposing each isolate separately to 1-, 4-, and 16-fold concentrations above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of each antifungal agent. A sigmoid maximum-effect (Emax) model was used to fit the time-kill curve data. The drug effect was further evaluated by measuring an increase/decrease in the killing rate of the tested isolates. The MICs of amphotericin B, itraconazole, voriconazole, and posaconazole were 0.5–1.0, 1.0, 0.5–1.0, and 0.25 µg/ml for A. brasiliensis, A. niger, and A. tubingensis isolates, respectively, and 2.0–4.0, 0.5, 1.0 for A. flavus, and 0.12–0.25 µg/ml for A. nomius isolates, respectively. A. calidoustus had the highest MIC range for the azoles (4.0–16.0 µg/ml) among all isolates tested. The minimum effective concentrations of caspofungin and anidulafungin were ≤0.03–0.5 µg/ml and ≤0.03 µg/ml for all isolates, respectively. Posaconazole demonstrated maximal killing rates (Emax = 0.63 h−1, r2 = 0.71) against 14 ocular Aspergillus isolates, followed by amphotericin B (Emax = 0.39 h−1, r2 = 0.87), voriconazole (Emax = 0.35 h−1, r2 = 0.098), and itraconazole (Emax = 0.01 h−1, r2 = 0.98). Overall, the antifungal susceptibility of the non-fumigatusAspergillus isolates tested was species and antifungal agent dependent. Analysis of the kinetic growth assays, along with consideration of the killing rates, revealed that posaconazole was the most effective antifungal against all of the isolates
Photophysical properties of porphycene derivatives (18 π porphyrinoids)
Absorption and fluorescence spectral data and triplet energy content, as well as quantum yields of fluorescence, of triplet state formation, and of sensitized generation of singlet molecular oxygen, O₂(¹∆g), of 38 porphycene derivatives are reported. Long-wavelength absorption and the efficiency of fluorescence and O₂(¹∆g) sensitization qualify most of these porphycenes as potential photodynamic therapy agents (so-called second-generation sensitizers), unless steric or electronic effects by substitution perturb the parent aromatic 18 π system.Instituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y Aplicada
Arcobacter butzleri Induce Colonic, Extra-Intestinal and Systemic Inflammatory Responses in Gnotobiotic IL-10 Deficient Mice in a Strain-Dependent Manner
BACKGROUND: The immunopathological impact of human Arcobacter (A.) infections
is under current debate. Episodes of gastroenteritis with abdominal pain and
acute or prolonged watery diarrhea were reported for A. butzleri infected
patients. Whereas adhesive, invasive and cytotoxic capacities have been
described for A. butzleri in vitro, only limited information is available
about the immunopathogenic potential and mechanisms of infection in vivo.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Gnotobiotic IL-10-/- mice were generated by
broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment and perorally infected with the A.
butzleri strains CCUG 30485 and C1 shown to be invasive in cell culture
assays. Bacterial colonization capacities, clinical conditions, intestinal,
extra-intestinal and systemic immune responses were monitored at day six and
16 postinfection (p.i.). Despite stable intestinal A. butzleri colonization at
high loads, gnotobiotic IL-10-/- mice were virtually unaffected and did not
display any overt symptoms at either time point. Notably, A. butzleri
infection induced apoptosis of colonic epithelial cells which was paralleled
by increased abundance of proliferating cells. Furthermore A. butzleri
infection caused a significant increase of distinct immune cell populations
such as T and B cells, regulatory T cells, macrophages and monocytes in the
colon which was accompanied by elevated colonic TNF, IFN-γ, nitric oxide (NO),
IL-6, IL-12p70 and MCP-1 concentrations. Strikingly, A. butzleri induced
extra-intestinal and systemic immune responses as indicated by higher NO
concentrations in kidney and increased TNF, IFN-γ, IL-12p70 and IL-6 levels in
serum samples of infected as compared to naive mice. Overall, inflammatory
responses could be observed earlier in the course of infection by the CCUG
30485 as compared to the C1 strain. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Peroral A.
butzleri infection induced not only intestinal but also extra-intestinal and
systemic immune responses in gnotobiotic IL-10-/- mice in a strain-dependent
manner. These findings point towards an immunopathogenic potential of A.
butzleri in vertebrate hosts
