    Interface relaxation in electrophoretic deposition of polymer chains: Effects of segmental dynamics, molecular weight, and field

    Using different segmental dynamics and relaxation, characteristics of the interface growth is examined in an electrophoretic deposition of polymer chains on a three (2+1) dimensional discrete lattice with a Monte Carlo simulation. Incorporation of faster modes such as crankshaft and reptation movements along with the relatively slow kink-jump dynamics seems crucial in relaxing the interface width. As the continuously released polymer chains are driven (via segmental movements) and deposited, the interface width WW grows with the number of time steps tt, Wtβ,W \propto t^{\beta}, (β0.4\beta \sim 0.4--0.8)0.8), which is followed by its saturation to a steady-state value WsW_s. Stopping the release of additional chains after saturation while continuing the segmental movements relaxes the saturated width to an equilibrium value (WsWrW_s \to W_r). Scaling of the relaxed interface width WrW_r with the driving field EE, WrE1/2W_r \propto E^{-1/2} remains similar to that of the steady-state WsW_s width. In contrast to monotonic increase of the steady-state width WsW_s, the relaxed interface width WrW_r is found to decay (possibly as a stretched exponential) with the molecular weight.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

    Foreign direct investment and investment environment in Dongguan Municipality of southern China

    Based on 26 case studies, this paper investigates the socio-economic causes of the inflow of FDI and its policy implications in Dongguan. The favourable factors for foreign investors in Dongguan can be categorised under the Dunning's OLI (ownership, locational and internalisation advantages) framework. This paper argues that factors other than policy incentive, such as sub-contractual and pseudo integration, are playing more important roles in attracting the inflow of FDI and maintaining the high level of economic growth in Dongguan. This finding questions the effectiveness of policy incentives, such as tax-breaks, implemented by the Government as a means to attract FDI in Dongguan. The existence of 'Chinese crony capitalism' calls for further improvement in the implementation of laws and regulations in Dongguan and the reduction of bureaucratic red-tape by the central and local governments

    Quasi-static Response of a Timoshenko Beam Loaded by an Elastically Supported Moving Rigid Beam

    The present paper is concerned with the quasi-static response of an elastic beam, loaded by a rigid beam, which is slowly transported along the elastic beam. The elastic beam is modelled as a Timoshenko beam. The present paper provides a limiting case of the model with constant distributed load that is often considered in the study of transported masses. The rigid beam is connected to the Timoshenko beam by means of an interface modelled as a Winkler foundation. We present a non-dimensional study on the influence of the interface stiffness upon the displacement, bending moment and shear force of the Timoshenko beam, when the rigid beam is assumed to suffer a prescribed transverse displacement. Special emphasis is laid on the distribution of pressure transmitted by the interface between the Timoshenko beam and the rigid beam. Considerable pressure concentrations are found to take place and the locations of the maximum bending moments in the Timoshenko beam move towards the ends of the rigid beam

    Wideband outdoor MIMO channel model derived from directional channel measurements at 2 GHz

    This paper describes the use of directional channel measurements to derive a MIMO channel model. The measurements were obtained using a wideband channel sounder and eight element circular array in a metropolitan area in central Bristol, U.K. The raw measurements were processed using SAGE to extract the parameters of multipath components. The analysis of these parameters revealed several interesting features, notably that their amplitude distribution was well modelled as log-normal, and that there was little evidence of clustering in the angles of arrival. Hence a MIMO channel based on the assumption of finite scattering was derived, using the distributions obtained. The model allows the channel matrix H to be derived in the narrow-band case, and a tapped delay line model is also obtained for wideband systems. While the model derived is based on only a small set of measurements, it provides a case study for MIMO modelling based on measurements

    Restoring circadian gene profiles in clock networks using synthetic feedback control

    The circadian system—an organism’s built-in biological clock—is responsible for orchestrating biological processes to adapt to diurnal and seasonal variations. Perturbations to the circadian system (e.g., pathogen attack, sudden environmental change) often result in pathophysiological responses (e.g., jetlag in humans, stunted growth in plants, etc.) In view of this, synthetic biologists are progressively adapting the idea of employing synthetic feedback control circuits to alleviate the effects of perturbations on circadian systems. To facilitate the design of such controllers, suitable models are required. Here, we extend our recently developed model for the plant circadian clock—termed the extended S-System model—to model circadian systems across different kingdoms of life. We then use this modeling strategy to develop a design framework, based on an antithetic integral feedback (AIF) controller, to restore a gene’s circadian profile when it is subject to loss-of-function due to external perturbations. The use of the AIF controller is motivated by its recent successful experimental implementation. Our findings provide circadian biologists with a systematic and general modeling and design approach for implementing synthetic feedback control of circadian systems

    Autonomous Navigation and Mapping using LiDAR

    The goal of this project was to make a fully autonomous robot, capable of mapping its surroundings and navigating through obstacles. This was done through the use of a chassis fitted with tracks and two motors, a lidar, a compass, and a Raspberry Pi. The robot also contains two batteries and is self powered. Encoders are used on the motors in order to track the distance traveled for more precise mapping and movements

    Development of a Friction Rig and Experimental Results

    The development of a friction rig, which is integrated into a milling machine for testing the frictional characteristics of various types of materials and specimen shapes are described. This is followed by the experimental technique used to measure the friction coefficient for different experimental conditions. The results obtained indicate the frictional coefficient obtained changes with the specimen type, contact area and lubrication condition. The results obtained are also compared to available published results. The discussions and conclusions related to the development and experimental results are finally presented

    Automated three-axis gonioreflectometer for computer graphics applications

    We describe an automated three-axis BRDF measurement instrument that can help increase the physical realism of computer graphics images by providing light scattering data for the surfaces within a synthetic scene that is to be rendered. To our knowledge, the instrument is unique in combining wide angular coverage (beyond 85 ° from the surface normal), dense sampling of the visible wavelength spectrum (1024 samples), and rapid operation (less than ten hours for complete measurement of an isotropic sample). The gonioreflectometer employs a broadband light source and a detector with a diffraction grating and linear diode array. Validation was achieved by comparisons against reference surfaces and other instruments. The accuracy and spectral and angular ranges of the BRDFs are appropriate for computer graphics imagery, while reciprocity and energy conservation are preserved. Measured BRDFs on rough aluminum, metallic silver automotive paint, and a glossy yellow paint are reported, and an example rendered automotive image is included
