Water detection at the moon, Mars and comets with a combined neutron gamma ray instrument

Measuring the fluxes of thermal and epithermal neutrons at a planetary object in conjunction with gamma-ray spectroscopic observations will provide information about the chemical composition of the surface which is less model dependent than the gamma ray measurements by themselves. Researchers devised a passive neutron detector for this purpose. An experimental model was designed and built. Three variables provided the basis for a set of experiments: thickness of the Sm and B layers, the presence or absence of the ACS, and the position of the source relative to the PND's cylindrical axis. Experimental results are given

When Don Breneman called me last January to participate on the New Technologies panel, I eagerly accepted. I have a habit of eagerly accepting responsibilities that are half a year away. In June, responsibilities accepted in January have a way of causing perspiration and I don\u27t believe that has anything to do with the weather in Fargo

    Endomorphisms and Translations of Semigroups

This thesis is a study of some of the properties of mappings or semigroups into semigroups. In Section 1, definitions and basic concepts are given, with brief mention of some well known properties of semigroups and of mappings. Section 2 is devoted to a few theroems which are useful in the process of finding the semigroup of all endomorphisms of a given semigroup. When theorems on endomorphisms are valid in the more general situation in which a semigroup is mapped homomorphically on another semigroup, we state and prove the theorems in the more general setting. Section 3 consists of some theroems and a short discussion of right and of left translations of semigroups. The rest of the paper is devoted to listing, in section 4, 1) the semigroups of all endomorphisms of semigroups of orders two, three and four, and 2) the semigroups of all right translations of and all left translations on semigroups of orders two, three and four

Toward an Understanding of Sports Consumers: A Sociological Perspective

    Get PDF
It is apparent from the number of participants and spectators of sport that it is a pervasive institution in our society. The commercial interests associated with sport further attest to its social and financial importance, A number of sociological factors are helpful for understanding the attractiveness of sport to individual consumers as well as its mass appeal to spectators. On a personal level, the attraction to sport often reflects one\u27s previous sport experiences as well as the degree of involvement in other roles. Furthermore, individual participation and spectators are likely to be consumers of sport if their sport involvement serves to reinforce their self-esteem. Sport also appeals to many people in our society because of the assumption that it contributes to the achievement of basic social values. The emphasis on the ritualistic and festive aspects of sport and the excitement they generate also contribute its mass appeal
