    Towards quantum superpositions of a mirror

    We propose a scheme for creating quantum superposition states involving of order 101410^{14} atoms via the interaction of a single photon with a tiny mirror. This mirror, mounted on a high-quality mechanical oscillator, is part of a high-finesse optical cavity which forms one arm of a Michelson interferometer. By observing the interference of the photon only, one can study the creation and decoherence of superpositions involving the mirror. The set-up of the course and the ICT-tool used in the course were evaluated for two years through a questionnaire among the students. The results show that the applied e-learning concept is highly appreciated and serves as an effective tool to exchange knowledge

    Modulation of calcium oxalate monohydrate crystallization kinetics in vitro. The effects of several low and high molecular weight (mol wt) compounds on the kinetics of calcium oxalate crystallization were examined using a seeded crystal growth method in which the solubility, the growth and the agglomeration of calcium oxalate crystals were measured as three separate and system-independent parameters. Git-rate, magnesium, phosphate, pyrophosphate, chondroitinsulphate, pen-tosanpolysulphate and heparin were tested in a wide range of concentrations. The solubility of calcium oxalate crystals Was increased only by citrate and magnesium. The crystal growth was inhibited by all compounds tested, but those with the high mol wt had the greatest effect at low concentrations. In contrast, inhibition of crystal agglomeration was achieved only by the low mol wt compounds; citrate was found to be the most potent inhibitor at concentrations likely to be present in normal urine. The high mol wt substances, despite their potent crystal growth inhibitory activity, had no effect on agglomeration. The results show that growth and agglomeration of calcium oxalate crystals are separate processes which are differently modulated by various compounds. They further provide a possible explanation for the pathogenetic role of citrate in hypocitraturic renal stone disease

    A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer for a Two-Photon Wave Packet

    We propose an experiment that permits observation of the de Broglie two-photon wave packet behavior for a pair of photons, using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. It is based on the use of pulsed lasers to generate pairs of photons via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and the post-selection of events. It differs from previous realizations by the use of a third time-correlated photon to engineer the state of the photons. The same technique can give us which-path information via an ``interaction-free'' experiment and can be used in other experiments on the foundations of quantum mechanics related to wave-particle duality and to nonlocality.Comment: Submmited for publication in Physical Review

    A search for transiting companions in the J1407 (V1400 Cen) system

    In 2007, the young star 1SWASP J140747.93-394542.6 (V1400 Cen) underwent a complex series of deep eclipses over 56 days. This was attributed to the transit of a ring system filling a large fraction of the Hill sphere of an unseen substellar companion. Subsequent photometric monitoring has not found any other deep transits from this candidate ring system, but if there are more substellar companions and they are coplanar with the potential ring system, there is a chance that they will transit the star as well. This young star is active and the light curves show a 5% modulation in amplitude with a dominant rotation period of 3.2 days due to star spots rotating in and out of view. We model and remove the rotational modulation of the J1407 light curve and search for additional transit signatures of substellar companions orbiting around J1407. We combine the photometry of J1407 from several observatories, spanning a 19 year baseline. We remove the rotational modulation by modeling the variability as a periodic signal, whose periodicity changes slowly with time over several years due to the activity cycle of the star. A Transit Least Squares (TLS) analysis searches for any periodic transiting signals within the cleaned light curve. We identify an activity cycle of J1407 with a period of 5.4 years. A Transit Least Squares search does not find any plausible periodic eclipses in the light curve, from 1.2% amplitude at 5 days up to 1.9% at 20 days. This sensitivity is confirmed by injecting artificial transits into the light curve and determining the recovery fraction as a function of transit depth and orbital period. J1407 is confirmed as a young active star with an activity cycle consistent with a rapidly rotating solar mass star. With the rotational modulation removed, the TLS analysis rules out transiting companions with radii larger than about 1 Jupiter.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics.     Motional effects of single trapped atomic/ionic qubit

    We investigate theoretical decoherence effects of the motional degrees of freedom of a single trapped atomic/ionic electronically coded qubit. For single bit rotations from a resonant running wave laser field excitation, we found the achievable fidelity to be determined by a single parameter characterized by the motional states. Our quantitative results provide a useful realistic view for current experimental efforts in quantum information and computing.Comment: 3 fig

    Magneto-thermal evidence of a partial gap at the Fermi surface of UPt_2Si_2

    Motivated by the observation of a giant Nernst effect in URu_2Si_2, the thermoelectric response of the related system UPt_2Si_2 was investigated using thermal and electric transport properties such as the Nernst and Seebeck effects, thermal conductivity, Hall effect and electrical resitivity. Unlike URu_2Si_2, UPt_2Si_2 is neither superconducting nor exhibits a ``hidden-order'' state. Nevertheless a pronounced Nernst effect anomaly is found to coincide with the onset of the antiferromagnetic order in UPt_2Si_2. Although the absolute values are substantially lower, its appearance and characteristics can favorably be compared to the giant Nernst effect in URu_2Si_2 indicating the common feature of a partial Fermi surface gap.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Irreversible Effects of Ivermectin on Adult Parasites in Onchocerciasis Patients in the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa

    Ivermectin is an effective drug for the treatment of human onchocerciasis, a disease caused by the parasitic filarial nematode Onchocerca volvulus. When humans are treated, the microfilariae normally found in the skin are rapidly and very nearly completely eliminated. Nonetheless, after a delay, microfilariae gradually reappear in the skin. This study is concerned with the causes of this delay. Hypotheses are tested by comparing the results of model calculations with skin microfilaria counts collected from 114 patients during a trial of five annual treatments in the focus area of Asubende, Ghana. The results obtained strongly suggest that annual treatment with ivermectin causes an irreversible decline in microfilariae production of ∼30%/treatment. This result has important implications for public health strategies designed to eliminate onchocerciasis as a significant health hazar
