Manipulator technology for the space shuttle

    Get PDF
A shuttle-attached manipulator is currently proposed as the payload-handling device for the space shuttle. Basic requirements for the manipulator involve length, force, compliance, and control. Approaches for studying control methods are presented and simulation methods are discussed. Basic details about the two earthbased manipulators selected for simulation experiments are related to the test methods. Preliminary data from one test are shown as an example of the direction of the testing. A computer-generated simulation is explained, and the relationship of the three simulations to the design problems is discussed

    Mouth-breathing - its post-operative treatment by respiratory re-education

It may be thought that some excuse is required for a description of such a simple method of treatment as respiratory re- education. It is certainly a simple matter, but I am convinced of its efficacy. I have been interested from very early years in mouth breathing, especially of functional origin, having been myself addicted to the habit when a boy. In my case, it was proved by Dr. Bickersteth,of Liverpool, whom I was taken to see, that there was no anatomical basis for the evil habit. So far as I can remember, I commenced to breathe by the mouth during a prolonged attack of coryza, and continued to do so after the coryza had disappeared. I found it absolutely impossible to breathe by the nose. I have since had many such cases brought under my notice. Treatment was partly psychical, partly thera- peutic, I being led to believe that breathing by the mouth was, in some obscure manner, morally wrong. A similar feeling appears to exist in relation to left -handedness. I suffered a good deal in consequence, and, though recognising the value of suggestion in treating cases of functional mouth - breathing, I have always been careful in my own practice to restrict its use. I certainly tried very earnestly to acquire the habit of nasal respiration, and at the end of about two years, after many dreaded visits to my physician ( I did not appreciate the nasal douches and digital post -nasal examinations), I succeeded in establishing a physio- logical basal respiration. No wonder, then, that I was much impressed, when working in Dr. Lermoyez's clinique in Paris ( 1903 - 4), by the results of systematically planned respiratory.exercises, which were then being carried out by Dr. Georges Rosenthal. A case of a young lady, 21 years of age, who had been a mouth breather for at least seven years, cured in four lessons, extending over a period of a fortnight, was so surprising, in_:comparison with my personal experience, as to command attention and investigation of the subject. The case is fully reported on page 77. Subsequent experience has only enforced the lesson of the value of respiratory exercises in functional bùccal respiration, and as a complement to surgical methods in cases of organic nasal stenosi:. As I have occasion to point out more than once in this paper, respiratory exercises are only of service when there no longer exists any anatomical obstruction in the continuity of the nasal passages. They are useless as a substitute for surgical operations in the nose and post -nasal space. Otherwise, the treatment is a perfectly rational and physiological one,and it is doubtless to this fact that the encouraging results of nasal respiratory re- education are due

US and EU Efforts to Combat International Money Laundering in the Art Market are no Masterpiece

    Get PDF
Despite the lack of significant, tangible evidence of money laundering through fine art and antiquities dealers, the EU recently passed the Fifth Anti-Money Laundering Directive adding art dealers to the list of businesses obligated to comply with record keeping and due diligence requirements. Shortly thereafter, a similar measure was proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, one-size-fits-all unilateral regulations will fail to protect the fine art and antiquities industry and will place crippling burdens on many art market participants. Instead, soft law agreements, used for most international finance regulation, should be the main tool to establish international standards. This Note suggests that the Financial Action Task Force, an international anti-money laundering institution, should create a flexible framework for risk-based regulations and international information sharing

Views of Coaching Practice Expressed by School-Based Coaches

    Get PDF
This study reports on the views of coaching expressed by school-based coaches and coaching experts in response to observing the practice of a novice coach featured in a video. Researchers hypothesized that a coach participant\u27s observations about another coach\u27s practice would be a useful tool for examining participants\u27 beliefs about coaching. Researchers compared responses from school-based coaches to the responses of coaching experts and views expressed in leading coaching literature in order to examine the variation in school-based coaches\u27 views. Analysis of responses from both practicing coaches and coaching experts revealed eight themes that describe components of the videotaped coaching cycle: 1) coaching relationships; 2) the use of praise by the coach; 3) discussions of student learning; 4) how coaches respond to teachers\u27 questions; 5) how coaches prompt reflection; 6) how coaches address teacher knowledge and learning; 7) discussions of mathematics content; and, 8) facilitation of the coaching session. The analysis also revealed that these themes correspond to accepted domains of coaching knowledge reported in the coaching literature

The Royal Free Hospital score: a calibrated prognostic model for patients with cirrhosis admitted to intensive care unit. Comparison with current models and CLIF-SOFA score

Prognosis for patients with cirrhosis admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) is poor. ICU prognostic models are more accurate than liver-specific models. We identified predictors of mortality, developed a novel prognostic score (Royal Free Hospital (RFH) score), and tested it against established prognostic models and the yet unvalidated Chronic Liver Failure-Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (CLIF-SOFA) model

Three Factors Leading to the Failure of Communications in Emergency Situations

The failure of communications, particularly related to interoperability, between police and firefighters responding to dangerous situations has resulted in death or injury to themselves or those they strive to protect. Using Grebner\u27s and Shannon and Weaver\u27s conceptualizations of communications theory as the foundation, the purpose of this general qualitative study was to evaluate, from the perspective of first responders, what barriers exist that may impede opportunities for interoperability of communications systems. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 18 experienced first responders from the states of California, New York, and Texas. Interview data were deductively coded and subjected to a thematic analysis procedure. Key findings indicated that participants perceived differences in technology among agencies as a primary source of frustration and impediment to full interoperability. Further, participants identified policy barriers, a lack of inter-agency training opportunities, and budgetary constraints as frustrating the efforts toward interoperability. The positive social change implications of this study include recommendations to policy makers and first responder agency leadership to support policy change, including appropriations, that encourage increased interoperability among first responder agencies to foster a more expeditious response to large scale emergencies
