    Stand-alone flat-plate photovoltaic power systems: System sizing and life-cycle costing methodology for Federal agencies

    A simple methodology to estimate photovoltaic system size and life-cycle costs in stand-alone applications is presented. It is designed to assist engineers at Government agencies in determining the feasibility of using small stand-alone photovoltaic systems to supply ac or dc power to the load. Photovoltaic system design considerations are presented as well as the equations for sizing the flat-plate array and the battery storage to meet the required load. Cost effectiveness of a candidate photovoltaic system is based on comparison with the life-cycle cost of alternative systems. Examples of alternative systems addressed are batteries, diesel generators, the utility grid, and other renewable energy systems

    Tagging two-photon production offers a significant extension of the LHC physics programme. Effective luminosity of high-energy gamma-gamma collisions reaches 1% of the proton-proton luminosity and the standard detector techniques used for measuring very forward proton scattering should allow for a reliable extraction of interesting two-photon interactions.     The "quasi-stable" lipid shelled microbubble in response to consecutive ultrasound pulses

    Controlled microbubble stability upon exposure to consecutive ultrasound exposures is important for increased sensitivity in contrast enhanced ultrasound diagnostics and manipulation for localised drug release. An ultra high-speed camera operating at 13 × 10 6 frames per second is used to show that a physical instability in the encapsulating lipid shell can be promoted by ultrasound, causing loss of shell material that depends on the characteristics of the microbubble motion. This leads to well characterized disruption, and microbubbles follow an irreversible trajectory through the resonance peak, causing the evolution of specific microbubble spectral signatures. © 2012 American Institute of Physics

    Evaluating tree root distribution in a tree-based intercropping system with use of ground penetrating radar

Proceedings, 13th North American Agroforestry Conference, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, June 19-21, 2013.Within agroforestry systems, tree root architecture is a driver of important ecological processes such as belowground nutrient flows and C storage. Yet the belowground component of trees remains largely under-studied due to methodological restraints. Conventional subsurface sampling can overlook the heterogeneity of root systems, while complete excavations are destructive and unrepeatable. Thus, there is a need to develop non-intrusive technologies, such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), to measure root systems in situ. In this study we used GPR to detect coarse root distributions below five tree species (Quercus rubra, Juglans nigra, Populus sp., Picea abies, and Thuja occidentalis) at a temperate tree-based intercropping site in Guelph, Ontario. GPR geo-imaged transects were collected in 4.5 _ 4.5m grids that were centered on 15 individual trees. Subsequently, tree roots were identified across all geo-images (visualized as radar signal reflections) providing 3-dimensional root distribution data for each target tree. Roots detected by GPR accounted for approximately 80% of large coarse roots (�1cm) and 40% of small coarse roots (<1cm) that were later exposed in a subset of matched soil profiles. Significant inter-specific variations of coarse rooting depth preferences were detected. Additionally, preliminary analyses indicate different tree rooting patterns below the crop rows. To determine fine root distributions, fine roots were extracted from soil cores collected from the tree root study plots. Preliminary analysis indicates fine root length densities vary across species predominately in the upper 20cm. Limitations will be identified and applications will be discussed of GPR to answer ecological questions within agroforestry systems.     A Case for Simpler GainBifurcation for Real Estate Developers

    This Article examines the judicially sanctioned bifurcation of real estate developers’ gain. The Article recognizes that even though some commentators oppose granting favorable tax treatment to capital gains, the law most likely will not change. With that in mind, the Article examines the all-or-nothing approach of characterizing gain from the sale of real estate as either capital gain or ordinary income. The Article rejects the all-or-nothing approach of characterizing income under the current statutory system. Instead, it embraces gain bifurcation in the second-best setting that taxes capital gains and ordinary income differently. Illustrating the policy justification for gain bifurcation and judicially sanctioned bifurcation structures, the Article recommends that lawmakers should more fully embrace gain bifurcation for real estate developers by creating a simple statutory election for bifurcating gain that would enhance equity, accuracy, and transparency of gain bifurcation. Although the Article limits its analysis to real estate developers, the idea of gain bifurcation, once improved in this area, could be a catalyst for exploring bifurcation in other areas

    Life history and pheromone response in Pissodes schwarzi Hopk. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

    Pitfall traps baited with live Pissodes schwarzi Hopk. males plus pine sections captured 46 female P. schwarzi from I June to 1 September, 1989, indicating the presence of a male-produced sex pheromone. No weevils were captured in unbaited traps, or those baited with females on pine or pine sections alone. Seasonal response of P. schwarzi females to the male-baited pifall traps indicated peak. periods of activity in early June, representing overwintered adults, and mid- to late July, corresponding to the emergence of new adults. Development time of P. schwarzi varied depending on oviposition location on the tree. Overwintered brood adults began to oviposit in May and continued through August
