Amino Acids from Icy Amines: A Radiation-Chemical Approach to Extraterrestrial Synthesis
Detections of amino acids in meteorites go back several decades, with at least 100 such compounds being reported for the Murchison meteorite alone. The presence of these extraterrestrial molecules raises questions as to their formation, abundance, thermal stability, racemization, and possible subsequent reactions. Although all of these topics have been studied in laboratories, such work often involves many variables and unknowns. This has led us to seek out model systems with which to uncover reaction products, test chemical predictions, and sited light on underlying reaction mechanisms. Law, Liberty and the Rule of Law (in a Constitutional Democracy)
In the hunt for a better--and more substantial--awareness of the “law,” The author intends to analyze the different notions related to the “rule of law” and to criticize the conceptions that equate it either to the sum of “law” and “rule” or to the formal assertion that “law rules,” regardless of its relationship to certain principles, including both “negative” and “positive” liberties. Instead, he pretends to scrutinize the principles of the “rule of law,” in general, and in a “constitutional democracy,” in particular, to conclude that the tendency to reduce the “democratic principle” to the “majority rule” (or “majority principle”), i.e. to whatever pleases the majority, as part of the “positive liberty,” is contrary both to the “negative liberty” and to the “rule of law” itself
Liberal equality: political not erinaceous
Ronald Dworkin’s Justice for Hedgehogs defends liberal political morality on the basis of a rich account of dignity as constitutive of living well. This article raises the Rawlsian concern that making political morality dependent on ethics threatens citizens’ political autonomy. Thereafter, it addresses whether the abandonment of (erinaceous) ethical foundations signals the demise of Dworkin’s liberalism and explores the possibility of laundering his conception so as to facilitate a marriage between the political philosophies of Rawls and Dworkin. The article finishes by rebutting some objections Dworkin raises against Rawls’s account of public reason
Global equality of resources and the problem of valuation
The principle that every individual on the planet has a claim to an equal share of Earth’s natural resources has an intuitive attraction. Yet the Principle of Natural Resource Equality is not without its problems. This article focuses on the problem of valuation. Unless and until its adherents are able to develop an adequate theoretical mechanism for determining the comparative value of two or more bundles of natural resources the principle lacks applicability and persuasive force. Three adequacy constraints on such a mechanism are presented and then applied to a theorisation of the Principle of Natural Resource Equality that I have already expounded elsewhere: Global Equality of Resources. In each case I try to argue that Global Equality of Resources could satisfy the adequacy constraint, provided that both this theory and the relevant constraint are properly understood
Weighted Dirac combs with pure point diffraction
A class of translation bounded complex measures, which have the form of
weighted Dirac combs, on locally compact Abelian groups is investigated. Given
such a Dirac comb, we are interested in its diffraction spectrum which emerges
as the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation measure. We present a
sufficient set of conditions to ensure that the diffraction measure is a pure
point measure. Simultaneously, we establish a natural link to the theory of the
cut and project formalism and to the theory of almost periodic measures. Our
conditions are general enough to cover the known theory of model sets, but also

Efficiency Improvements for Encrypt-to-Self
Recent work by Pijnenburg and Poettering (ESORICS'20) explores the novel
cryptographic Encrypt-to-Self primitive that is dedicated to use cases of
symmetric encryption where encryptor and decryptor coincide. The primitive is
envisioned to be useful whenever a memory-bounded computing device is required
to encrypt some data with the aim of temporarily depositing it on an untrusted
storage device. While the new primitive protects the confidentiality of
payloads as much as classic authenticated encryption primitives would do, it
provides considerably better authenticity guarantees: Specifically, while
classic solutions would completely fail in a context involving user
corruptions, if an encrypt-to-self scheme is used to protect the data, all
ciphertexts and messages fully remain unforgeable.
To instantiate their encrypt-to-self primitive, Pijnenburg et al propose a
mode of operation of the compression function of a hash function, with a
carefully designed encoding function playing the central role in the
serialization of the processed message and associated data. In the present work
we revisit the design of this encoding function. Without questioning its
adequacy for securely accomplishing the encrypt-to-self job, we improve on it
from a technical/implementational perspective by proposing modifications that
alleviate certain conditions that would inevitably require implementations to
disrespect memory alignment restrictions imposed by the word-wise operation of
modern CPUs, ultimately leading to performance penalties. Our main
contributions are thus to propose an improved encoding function, to explain why
it offers better performance, and to prove that it provides as much security as
its predecessor. We finally report on our open-source implementation of the

In defence of global egalitarianism
This essay argues that David Miller's criticisms of global egalitarianism do not undermine the view where it is stated in one of its stronger, luck egalitarian forms. The claim that global egalitarianism cannot specify a metric of justice which is broad enough to exclude spurious claims for redistribution, but precise enough to appropriately value different kinds of advantage, implicitly assumes that cultural understandings are the only legitimate way of identifying what counts as advantage. But that is an assumption always or almost always rejected by global egalitarianism. The claim that global egalitarianism demands either too little redistribution, leaving the unborn and dissenters burdened with their societies' imprudent choices, or too much redistribution, creating perverse incentives by punishing prudent decisions, only presents a problem for global luck egalitarianism on the assumption that nations can legitimately inherit assets from earlier generations – again, an assumption very much at odds with global egalitarian assumptions
Tilings, tiling spaces and topology
To understand an aperiodic tiling (or a quasicrystal modeled on an aperiodic
tiling), we construct a space of similar tilings, on which the group of
translations acts naturally. This space is then an (abstract) dynamical system.
Dynamical properties of the space (such as mixing, or the spectrum of the
translation operator) are closely related to bulk properties of the individual
tilings (such as the diffraction pattern). The topology of the space of
tilings, particularly the Cech cohomology, gives information on how the
original tiling can be deformed. Tiling spaces can be constructed as inverse
