The universe is chosen as spatially flat FRW space-time with modified Chaplygin gas as the only cosmic substratum.     Genetic regulation of autophagic cell death in Drosophila Melanogester

    Apoptosis and autophagic cell death are the two most prominent morphological forms of programmed cell death that occur during animal development. While much is known about the mechanisms that regulate apoptosis, relatively little is known about autophagic cell death. The steroid hormone ecdysone coordinates multiple cellular processes during metamorphosis in Drosophila, including cell differentiation, morphogenesis and death. E93 is necessary and sufficient for larval tissue cell death during metamorphosis, including autophagic cell death of salivary glands. Here we characterize new mutant alleles of a dominant wing vein mutation Vein-off (Vno), and provide evidence that E93 and Vno are related. Our data also indicate that E93 functions in steroid regulation of both cell development and death during metamorphosis. E93 encodes a helix-turn-helix DNA binding motif and binds to specific regions of salivary gland polytene chromosomes. We have used genetic and genomic approaches to identify downstream targets of E93. We have identified numerous candidate E93 target genes using DNA microarrays, and have generated transgenic animals to identify downstream target genes of E93 by chromatin immune precipitation. We show that one putative E93 target gene, hippo (hpo), is required for salivary gland cell death. The Wts/Hpo tumor-suppressor pathway is a critical regulator of tissue growth in animals, but it is not clear how this signaling pathway controls cell growth. Our data indicate that salivary gland degradation requires genes in the Wts/Hpo pathway. Wts is required for cell growth arrest and autophagy in dying salivary glands, and regulates the degradation of this tissue in a PI3K-dependent manner

    Kernelization of the Subset General Position Problem in Geometry

    In this paper, we consider variants of the Geometric Subset General Position problem. In defining this problem, a geometric subsystem is specified, like a subsystem of lines, hyperplanes or spheres. The input of the problem is a set of n points in mathbb{R}^d and a positive integer k. The objective is to find a subset of at least k input points such that this subset is in general position with respect to the specified subsystem. For example, a set of points is in general position with respect to a subsystem of hyperplanes in mathbb{R}^d if no d+1 points lie on the same hyperplane. In this paper, we study the Hyperplane Subset General Position problem under two parameterizations. When parameterized by k then we exhibit a polynomial kernelization for the problem. When parameterized by h=n-k, or the dual parameter, then we exhibit polynomial kernels which are also tight, under standard complexity theoretic assumptions. We can also exhibit similar kernelization results for d-Polynomial Subset General Position, where a vector space of polynomials of degree at most d are specified as the underlying subsystem such that the size of the basis for this vector space is b. The objective is to find a set of at least k input points, or in the dual delete at most h = n-k points, such that no b+1 points lie on the same polynomial. Notice that this is a generalization of many well-studied geometric variants of the Set Cover problem, such as Circle Subset General Position. We also study general projective variants of these problems. These problems are also related to other geometric problems like Subset Delaunay Triangulation problem

    Visceral Leishmaniasis

    Clinically, leishmaniasis is of three types—visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or kala-azar, cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL). Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is considered as a complication of VL. VL is characterized by fever, anemia and splenomegaly in a VL-endemic area (malaria excluded). A subject with such symptoms should be subjected to an rK39 strip test. Confirmation of diagnosis is made by demonstration of the parasite (Leishmania donovani) from samples obtained by aspiration of bone marrow or iliac crest puncture. Miltefosine, stibogluconate, amphotericin B, liposomal amphotericin B and paromomycin are effective available anti-leishmaniasis drugs. Vector (Phleblotomus argentipes) control for reduction of transmission and early diagnosis and complete treatment are essential elements of case management. There is no effective vaccine against VL. This review on VL aims at providing state-art knowledge on epidemiology, diagnosis and case-management and vaccine development

    Association Of Handgrip Strength, Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference And Depression Scale Among Adults: A Hospital Based Cross-Sectional Observational Study

    In the northeastern region of India, particularly, there has been limited research on the connection between handgrip strength, body mass index (BMI), and depression. The current study aimed to investigate whether obesity in adult women (aged 20 to 80) influenced the relationship between handgrip strength and the risk of depression. This research was conducted at Kolkata's Peerless Hospital from February 2022 to March 2023, involving a cross-sectional observational study with a total of 458 participants, both male and female, aged 18 to 80. Ethical clearance for the study was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Peerless Hospital and B K Roy Research Center, located at 360 Pancha Sayar Rd, Sahid Smirity Colony, Pancha Sayar, Kolkata, West Bengal 700094 (PHH&RCLCREC/ 4020/2023). The study adhered to the ethical guidelines established by the institution's research committee and followed the principles outlined in the 1964 Helsinki Declaration and its subsequent revisions to ensure consistent ethical standards in all procedures involving human participants. Prior to commencing the study, informed written consent was obtained from all participants. Older women with thyroid dysfunction, or hormone replacement therapy, amenorrhea, those taking vitamin D supplements and individuals with physical or mental challenges, and those who were generally uncooperative were excluded from the study. The results of the present study demonstrated a statistically significant association between depression and handgrip strength, as indicated by the Chi-Square test. Handgrip strength also displayed a significant negative correlation with BMI. Waist circumference (WC) showed a significant association with handgrip strength, with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.66. Furthermore, there was a significant negative correlation between WC and handgrip strength. When considering body fat percentage, the OR for handgrip strength was 2.92, and a significant association was observed between handgrip strength and body fat percentage
