    Convergence of fully discrete schemes for diffusive dispersive conservation laws with discontinuous coefficient

    We are concerned with fully-discrete schemes for the numerical approximation of diffusive-dispersive hyperbolic conservation laws with a discontinuous flux function in one-space dimension. More precisely, we show the convergence of approximate solutions, generated by the scheme corresponding to vanishing diffusive-dispersive scalar conservation laws with a discontinuous coefficient, to the corresponding scalar conservation law with discontinuous coefficient. Finally, the convergence is illustrated by several examples. In particular, it is delineated that the limiting solutions generated by the scheme need not coincide, depending on the relation between diffusion and the dispersion coefficients, with the classical Kruzkov-Oleinik entropy solutions, but contain nonclassical undercompressive shock waves.Comment: 38 Pages, 6 figure

    In silico characterization of bacterial chitinase : illuminating its relationship with archaeal and eukaryotic cousins

    BackgroundChitin is one of the most abundant biopolymers on Earth, only trailing second after cellulose. The enzyme chitinase is responsible for the degradation of chitin. Chitinases are found to be produced by wide range of organisms ranging from archaea to higher plants. Though chitin is a major component of fungal cell walls and invertebrate exoskeletons, bacterial chitinase can be industrially generated at low cost, in facile downstream processes at high production rate. Microbial chitinases are more stable, active, and economically practicable compared to the plant- and animal-derived enzymes.ResultsIn the present study, computationally obtained results showed functional characteristics of chitinase with particular emphasis on bacterial chitinase which is fulfilling all the required qualities needed for commercial production. Sixty-two chitinase sequences from four different groups of organisms were collected from the RCSB Protein Data Bank. Considering one suitable exemplary sequence from each group is being compared with others. Primary, secondary, and tertiary structures are determined by in silico models. Different physical parameters, viz., pI, molecular weight, instability index, aliphatic index, GRAVY, and presence of functional motifs, are determined, and a phylogenetic tree has been constructed to elucidate relationships with other groups of organisms.ConclusionsThis study provides novel insights into distribution of chitinase among four groups and their characterization. The results represent valuable information toward bacterial chitinase in terms of the catalytic properties and structural features, can be exploited to produce a range of chitin-derived products.Peer reviewe

    Boundary null-controllability of 1d linearized compressible Navier-Stokes system by one control force

    In this article, we study the boundary null-controllability of the one-dimensional linearized compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the interval (0,1)(0,1) with a Dirichlet boundary control only on the density component and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on the velocity component. We prove that the linearized system is null-controllable in H˙pers(0,1)×L2(0,1)\dot{H}^s_{per}(0,1) \times L^2(0,1) for any s>1/2s > 1/2 provided the time T>1T > 1, where H˙pers(0,1)\dot{H}^s_{per}(0,1) denotes the Sobolev space of periodic functions with zero mean value. As it is well-known, the time restriction is arising due to the presence of a transport equation in the system. The proof for the null-controllability is based on solving a mixed parabolic-hyperbolic moments problem. To apply this, we perform a spectral analysis of the associated adjoint operator which is the main involved part of this work

    Seismic response of soil-pile raft-structure system

    This paper presents an initial effort to investigate seismic response of soil-pile raft-structure system considering soil-structure interaction effect. In general, structure and piled raft under seismic load are designed considering fixed base condition. However, soil flexibility may result significant changes in the response of soil-pile raft-structure system. The study considers one storey system consisting of a mass in the form of a rigid floor slab supported by four columns. The piles are modelled by beam-column element supported by laterally distributed springs and dampers. This simple model used in present study is adequately tuned to exhibit reasonably accurate dynamic characteristics while compared to the existing well accepted methodologies. The study shows that soil-structure interaction leads to considerable lengthening of period though the lateral shear in columns are not significantly changed. However, the shear in piles is significantly increased due to SSI effect as inertia of the considerable foundation mass contributes to this increase in shear of pile. Thus, neglecting SSI may lead to unsafe seismic design of piles. A parametric study encompassing feasible variations of parameters is made under spectrum consistent ground motion. Effect of uncertainty in the soil subgrade modulus on the pile and column response variability is also studied

    Association Between Serum Vitamin D Levels and Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Background: Vitamin D is an important secosteroid which is involved the development and regulation of brain activity. Several studies have focused on exploring the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and Parkinson's disease (PD), but the conclusion remains ambiguous.Methods: We searched observational studies that explored the association between serum vitamin D levels and PD based on PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane library from inception through to January 2018. The quality of included studies was evaluated by using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Statistical analysis of this meta-analysis was performed by Stata version 12.0 and R software.Results: Twenty studies with a total of 2,866 PD patients and 2,734 controls were included. Compared with controls, PD patients had lower serum vitamin D levels (WMD −3.96, 95%CI −5.00, −2.92), especially in higher latitude regions (WMD −4.20, 95%CI −5.66, −2.75). Assay methods contributed significantly to high heterogeneity. Furthermore, PD patients with deficient vitamin D levels had advanced risk (OR 2.08, 95%CI 1.35, 3.19) than those patients with insufficient ones (OR = 1.73, 95%CI 1.48, 2.03). In addition, serum vitamin D levels were also related to the severity of PD (WMD −5.27, 95%CI −8.14, −2.39) and the summary correlation coefficient showed strongly negative correlation (r = −0.55, 95%CI −0.73, −0.29). Moreover, the pooled correlation coefficient revealed that serum vitamin D levels were also negatively correlated to the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale III (UPDRS III) (r = −0.36, 95%CI −0.53, −0.16), but did not correlate with the duration of PD (P = 0.37) and age of patients (P = 0.49).Conclusion: Serum vitamin D levels are inversely associated with the risk and severity of PD. Our results provided an updated evidence of association between low vitamin D levels and PD and prompt the adjunctive therapeutic decisions about vitamin D replacement in PD

    HIV, opioid use, and alterations to the gut microbiome: elucidating independent and synergistic effects

    BackgroundThe microbiome is essential to immune development, defense against pathogens, and modulation of inflammation. Microbial dysbiosis has been reported in various diseases including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and opioid use disorder (OUD). Notably, people living with HIV (PLWH) have been reported to both have higher rates of OUD and use opioids at higher rates than the general public. Thus, studying gut microbial alterations in people living with HIV and with OUD could elucidate mechanisms pertaining to how these conditions both shape and are shaped by the microbiome. However, to date few studies have investigated how HIV and OUD in combination impact the microbiome.Aim of reviewHere, we review previous studies outlining interactions between HIV, opioid use, and microbial dysbiosis and describe attempts to treat this dysbiosis with fecal microbial transplantation, probiotics, and dietary changes.Key scientific concepts of reviewWhile the limited number of studies prevent overgeneralizations; accumulating data suggest that HIV and opioid use together induce distinct alterations in the gut microbiome. Among the three existing preclinical studies of HIV and opioid use, two studies reported a decrease in Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae, and one study reported a decrease in Muribaculaceae in the combined HIV and opioid group relative to HIV-alone, opioid-alone, or control groups. These bacteria are known to modulate immune function, decrease colonic inflammation, and maintain gut epithelial barrier integrity in healthy individuals. Accordingly, modulation of the gut microbiome to restore gut homeostasis may be attempted to improve both conditions. While mixed results exist regarding treating dysbiosis with microbial restoration in PLWH or in those with opioid dependency, larger well-defined studies that can improve microbial engraftment in hosts hold much promise and should still be explored

    Age-related cognitive decline and associations with sex, education and apolipoprotein E genotype across ethnocultural groups and geographic regions: a collaborative cohort study

    Background: The prevalence of dementia varies around the world, potentially contributed to by international differences in rates of age-related cognitive decline. Our primary goal was to investigate how rates of age-related decline in cognitive test performance varied among international cohort studies of cognitive aging. We also determined the extent to which sex, educational attainment, and apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (APOE*4) carrier status were associated with decline. Methods and findings: We harmonized longitudinal data for 14 cohorts from 12 countries (Australia, Brazil, France, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Spain, South Korea, United Kingdom, United States), for a total of 42,170 individuals aged 54–105 y (42% male), including 3.3% with dementia at baseline. The studies began between 1989 and 2011, with all but three ongoing, and each had 2–16 assessment waves (median = 3) and a follow-up duration of 2–15 y. We analyzed standardized Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and memory, processing speed, language, and executive functioning test scores using linear mixed models, adjusted for sex and education, and meta-analytic techniques. Performance on all cognitive measures declined with age, with the most rapid rate of change pooled across cohorts a moderate -0.26 standard deviations per decade (SD/decade) (95% confidence interval [CI] [-0.35, -0.16], p < 0.001) for processing speed. Rates of decline accelerated slightly with age, with executive functioning showing the largest additional rate of decline with every further decade of age (-0.07 SD/decade, 95% CI [-0.10, -0.03], p = 0.002). There was a considerable degree of heterogeneity in the associations across cohorts, including a slightly faster decline (p = 0.021) on the MMSE for Asians (-0.20 SD/decade, 95% CI [-0.28, -0.12], p < 0.001) than for whites (-0.09 SD/decade, 95% CI [-0.16, -0.02], p = 0.009). Males declined on the MMSE at a slightly slower rate than females (difference = 0.023 SD/decade, 95% CI [0.011, 0.035], p < 0.001), and every additional year of education was associated with a rate of decline slightly slower for the MMSE (0.004 SD/decade less, 95% CI [0.002, 0.006], p = 0.001), but slightly faster for language (-0.007 SD/decade more, 95% CI [-0.011, -0.003], p = 0.001). APOE*4 carriers declined slightly more rapidly than non-carriers on most cognitive measures, with processing speed showing the greatest difference (-0.08 SD/decade, 95% CI [-0.15, -0.01], p = 0.019). The same overall pattern of results was found when analyses were repeated with baseline dementia cases excluded. We used only one test to represent cognitive domains, and though a prototypical one, we nevertheless urge caution in generalizing the results to domains rather than viewing them as test-specific associations. This study lacked cohorts from Africa, India, and mainland China. Conclusions: Cognitive performance declined with age, and more rapidly with increasing age, across samples from diverse ethnocultural groups and geographical regions. Associations varied across cohorts, suggesting that different rates of cognitive decline might contribute to the global variation in dementia prevalence. However, the many similarities and consistent associations with education and APOE genotype indicate a need to explore how international differences in associations with other risk factors such as genetics, cardiovascular health, and lifestyle are involved.
