ArgoNeuT, a liquid argon time projection chamber in a low energy neutrino beam
ArgoNeuT (Argon Neutrino Test), a NSF/DOE project at Fermilab, is the first
LArTPC to go in a low energy neutrino beam and just the second LArTPC to go in
a neutrino beam ever. ArgoNeuT sits just upstream of the on-axis MINOS near
detector in the NuMI beamline, about 1 km from the target station and 100 m
underground. The detector features a 47X40X90 cm (169 L) active volume TPC with
a fully contained recirculation and purification system. Among other physics,
ArgoNeuT will measure the charged-current quasi-elastic (anti-) neutrino cross

Room temperature organic exciton-polariton condensate in a lattice

We also thank the WuÌrzburgâDresden Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat for financial support.Interacting Bosons in artificial lattices have emerged as a modern platform to explore collective manybody phenomena and exotic phases of matter as well as to enable advanced on-chip simulators. On chip, excitonâpolaritons emerged as a promising system to implement and study bosonic non-linear systems in lattices, demanding cryogenic temperatures. We discuss an experiment conducted on a polaritonic lattice at ambient conditions: We utilize fluorescent proteins providing ultra-stable Frenkel excitons. Their soft nature allows for mechanically shaping them in the photonic lattice. We demonstrate controlled loading of the coherent condensate in distinct orbital lattice modes of different symmetries. Finally, we explore the self-localization of the condensate in a gap-state, driven by the interplay of effective interaction and negative effective mass in our lattice. We believe that this work establishes organic polaritons as a serious contender to the well-established GaAs platform for a wide range of applications relying on coherent Bosons in lattices.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Diarrheagenic enteroaggregative Escherichia coli causing urinary tract infection and bacteremia leading to sepsis
We report a case of a 55-year-old immunocompromised female who presented to the emergency department with severe diarrhea and vomiting following travel to the Philippines. Stool bacteriology revealed a mixed infection involving an enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and two distinct strains of enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC). During hospitalization, urine and blood culture tested positive for one of the diarrheagenic EAEC strains, necessitating urinary catheterization, intensive care, and antimicrobial treatment with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, followed by meropenem. Although known to occasionally cause urinary tract infections, EAEC have not been previously associated with sepsis. Our report highlights the potential of EAEC to cause severe extraintestinal infections
Late pleistocene sedimentation history of the Shirshov Ridge, Bering Sea
The analysis of the lithology, grain-size distribution, clay minerals, and geochemistry of Upper
Pleistocene sediments from the submarine Shirshov Ridge (Bering Sea) showed that the main source area was
the YukonâTanana terrane of Central Alaska. The sedimentary materials were transported by the Yukon
River through Beringia up to the shelf break, where they were entrained by a strong northwestward-flowing
sea current. The lithological data revealed several pulses of ice-rafted debris deposition, roughly synchronous
with Heinrich events, and periods of weaker bottom-current intensity. Based on the geochemical results, we
distinguished intervals of an increase in paleoproductivity and extension of the oxygen minimum zone. The
results suggest that there were three stages of deposition driven by glacioeustatic sea-level fluctuations and
glacial cycles in Alaska

Combinatorics of Crystal Folding
We study the structure of a Kashiwara crystal of simply-laced Cartan type \cd under an automorphism , via a process known as folding. We define the category of -foldable crystals, which is a monoidal category and admits a monoidal functor into the category of \cd^{\sigma\vee}-crystals. Various properties of a foldable crystal---normality, Weyl group action, \emph{etc.}---can be transferred to its quotient modulo the -action. On the other hand, the quotient of a foldable highest-weight crystal contains a new type of crystal, which we call multi-highest-weight. We consider multi-highest-weight crystals obtained as foldings of Kashiwara Littelmann crystals .The structure of the highest-weight set of is explained by certain subsets of the Weyl group we call the balanced parabolic quotients; in many cases the latter parameterizes a generating set for the highest-weight elements. A balanced parabolic quotient relates the branching rules, Demazure crystals, and -action on , and is enumerated by a forest graph with self-similar components
Long noncoding RNAs are associated with metabolic and cellular processes in the jejunum mucosa of pre-weaning calves in response to different diets
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) emerged as important regulatory component of mechanisms involved in gene expression, chromatin modification and epigenetic processes, but they are rarely annotated in the bovine genome. Our study monitored the jejunum transcriptome of German Holstein calves fed two different milk diets using transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq). To identify potential lncRNAs within the pool of unknown transcripts, four bioinformatic lncRNA prediction tools were applied. The intersection of the alignment-free lncRNA prediction tools (CNCI, PLEK and FEELnc) predicted 1,812 lncRNA transcripts concordantly comprising a catalogue of 1,042 putative lncRNA loci expressed in the calvesâ intestinal mucosa. Nine lncRNA loci were differentially expressed (DE lncRNAs) between both calf groups. To elucidate their biological function, we applied a systems biology approach that combines weighted gene co-expression network analysis with functional enrichment and biological pathway analysis. Four DE lncRNAs were found to be strongly correlated with a gene network module (GNM) enriched for genes from canonical pathways of remodeling of epithelial adherens junction, tight junction and integrin signaling. Another DE lncRNA was strongly correlated with a GNM enriched for genes associated with energy metabolism and maintaining of cellular homeostasis with a focus on mitochondrial processes. Our data suggest that these DE lncRNAs may play potential regulatory roles in modulating biological processes associated with energy metabolism pathways and cellular signaling processes affecting the barrier function of intestinal epithelial cells of calves in response to different feeding regimens in the pre-weaning period
