Comparison of wet and dried chickpea yeast in breadmaking
BACKGROUND: Chickpea yeast (CY), initiated by spontaneous fermentation of coarsely-ground chickpea in water, is considered a variant of conventional sourdough and contributes somewhat similarly to bakery products. As the preparation of wet CY prior to each baking process poses certain difficulties, its usage in dry form has been gaining interest. In this study, CY was used either directly in freshly prepared wet form or in freeze-dried and spray-dried forms at 50, 100 and 150 g kg−1 levels (all on 14% moisture basis) in substitution with wheat flour to compare their effects on bread properties. RESULTS: Utilization of all forms of CY did not noticeably change the contents of protein, fat, ash, total carbohydrate and damaged starch in the wheat flour–CY mixtures. However, falling numbers and sedimentation volumes of CY-containing mixtures decreased significantly, due probably to the increase in the amylolytic and proteolytic activities during chickpea fermentation. These changes somewhat corresponded to improved dough processability. Both wet and dried CY samples reduced pH levels of doughs and breads, and increased probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) count. Total phenolic contents, antioxidant capacities and flavor scores of CY-containing breads were significantly enhanced. However, CY usage slightly influenced yield, moisture content, volume, color and hardness values of breads. CONCLUSION: Effects of wet and dried forms of CY on bread properties were quite comparable, indicating that CY can be used upon properly drying similarly to the conventional wet form
Treatment of aneurysms arising from the proximal (A1) segment of the anterior cerebral artery
The aim of our study was to report a series of 15 consecutive patients with aneurysms of the proximal segment (A1) of the anterior cerebral artery. In 15 patients with diagnosed A1 aneurysms, representing 2.1% of 720 aneurysm patients treated at a University Clinical Center between October 1999 and August 2012, clinical presentation, neuroradiological findings, surgical treatment methods and outcome were retrospectively analyzed. Mean patient age was 53.06 (range 32. to 75) years. Ten saccular aneurysms were treated with micro neurosurgical approach via standard pterional craniotomy, four fusiform aneurysms with coiling, and one fusiform aneurysm with stent. No patients died during the operation. The mean follow-up period was 32 months (range 5 months to 7 years). Clinical outcomes revealed good recovery in all patients. Despite the general opinion that A1 aneurysms are benign lesions, an increasing number of reports have demonstrated their potential complications. To date, due to the rarity of A1 aneurysms, only a few consecutive series have been reported. Conduct of multicenter studies are required in order to understand clinical features of A1 aneurysms and devise a proper treatment plan. (c) 2014 Association of Basic Medical Sciences of FB&H. Intermittent Subcutaneous Injections of Apomorphine in Parkinson’s Disease
The intermittent subcutaneous injection of apomorphine is highly effective in the management of motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Although it has been shown that apomorphine injection can be safely used in selected cases at all stages of the disease, there is no consensus regarding intermittent administration strategies. This review aimed to discuss the indications for intermittent subcutaneous apomorphine use in clinical practice, possible side effects and their management, and contraindicated cases in light of the literature and to present practical recommendations for clinical practice
Dementia and parkinsonism case secondary to giant cystic Virchow-Robin spaces
The perivascular spaces in the brain, called Virchow Robin spaces, are well-defined spaces filled with interstitial fluid accompanying the arteries and arterioles perforating the brain parenchyma. Normally 1 to 2 mm, these spaces can be seen in healthy individuals at almost any age and are usually asymptomatic. When they expand, they may cause different clinical characteristics depending on their localization and frequency. The enlarged giant Virchow-Robin spaces have been associated with hydrocephalus, small vessel diseases, and other neuropsychiatric disorders, but the causes associated with vascular parkinsonism and subcortical dementia are very rare. In this article, we present secondary vascular parkinsonism and subcortical dementia due to multilobule cystic giant Virchow-Robin spaces
