    Replicating capacity and congestion in microscale agent-based simulations

    Disaster events cause detrimental impacts for communities across the globe, ranging from large numbers of fatalities and injuries, to the loss of homes and devastating financial impacts. Emergency professionals are facedwith the challenge of providing sustainable solutions to mitigate these consequences and require tools to aid the assessment of potential impacts. Current modelling tools have either focused on modelling either the microscale (e.g. individual confined spaces such as buildings or stadiums) or the macroscale (e.g. city scale). The aim of thisresearch is to create microscale agent-based modelling (ABM) tools, incorporating a realistic representation of human behaviours, which will help management professionals assess and improve their contingency plans for emergency scenarios. The focus has been on creating a microscale agent-based model of a pedestrian pavement and crossroads, to include overtaking and giving way, alongside the inclusion of varied population characteristics. This research has found that by improving pedestrian interactions (e.g. overtaking and giving way interactions) on pavements and at crossroads more robust travel time estimates can be achieved. To produce more realistic behaviour traits, microscale models should consider: (1) varied walking speed (2) population density, (3) patience level and (4) an exit split percentage for crossroads. Comparisons to 1.34 m/s (3mph) models without additional variables show the travel times may be misrepresentative by up to 78% in pavements and 305% in crossroads for some population types. This has the potential to cause cascading effects such as a significant increase in fatalities or injuries as communities cannot reach safety in the anticipated time

    We consider the case of the proposed Atlanta BeltLine to shed light on what may be crucial limits to ethical decision making and responsible action in shaping or reshaping the built environment, especially as those limits enter into the lived experience of individual residents of metropolitan areas. Drawing from theoretical sources in the humanities and social sciences, we consider the scope and limits of responsible individual conduct within complex urban systems, and derive insights that may be of value to planners and others who have visions for urban transformation. We will also draw from the ongoing analysis of our survey of Atlanta area residents, for purposes of illustration

    Is It Easy to Be Urban? Convergent Success in Urban Habitats among Lineages of a Widespread Native Ant

    The most rapidly expanding habitat globally is the urban habitat, yet the origin and life histories of the populations of native species that inhabit this habitat remain poorly understood. We use DNA barcoding of the COI gene in the widespread native pest ant Tapinoma sessile to test two hypotheses regarding the origin of urban populations and traits associated with their success. First, we determine if urban samples of T. sessile have a single origin from natural populations by looking at patterns of haplotype clustering fromacross their range. Second, we examine whether polygynous colony structure - a trait associated with invasion success - is correlated with urban environments, by studying the lineage dependence of colony structure. Our phylogenetic analysis of 49 samples identified four well supported geographic clades. Within clades, Kimura-2 parameter pairwise genetic distances revealed \u3c2.3% variation; however, between clade genetic distances were 7.5-10.0%, suggesting the possibility of the presence of cryptic species. Our results indicate that T. sessile has successfully colonized urban environments multiple times. Additionally, polygynous colony structure is a highly plastic trait across habitat, clade, and haplotype. In short, T. sessile has colonized urban habitats repeatedly and appears to do so using life history strategies already present in more natural populations. Whether similar results hold for other species found in urban habitats has scarcely begun to be considered

    A high calcium diet containing nonfat dry milk reduces weight gain and associated adipose tissue inflammation in diet-induced obese mice when compared to high calcium alone

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>High dietary calcium (Ca) is reported to have anti-obesity and anti-inflammatory properties. Evidence for these properties of dietary Ca in animal models of polygenic obesity have been confounded by the inclusion of dairy food components in experimental diets; thus, effect of Ca <it>per se </it>could not be deciphered. Furthermore, potential anti-inflammatory actions of Ca <it>in vivo </it>could not be dissociated from reduced adiposity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We characterized adiposity along with metabolic and inflammatory phenotypes in diet-induced obese (DIO) mice fed 1 of 3 high fat diets (45% energy) for 12 wk: control (<it>n </it>= 29), high-Ca (<it>n </it>= 30), or high-Ca + nonfat dry milk (NFDM) (<it>n </it>= 30).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mice fed high-Ca + NFDM had reduced body weight and adiposity compared to high-Ca mice (<it>P </it>< 0.001). Surprisingly, the high-Ca mice had increased adiposity compared to lower-Ca controls (<it>P </it>< 0.001). Hyperphagia and increased feed efficiency contributed to obesity development in high-Ca mice, in contrast to NFDM mice that displayed significantly reduced weight gain despite higher energy intake compared to controls (P < 0.001). mRNA markers of macrophages (e.g., CD68, CD11d) strongly correlated with body weight in all diet treatment groups, and most treatment differences in WAT inflammatory factor mRNA abundances were lost when controlling for body weight gain as a covariate.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results indicate that high dietary Ca is not sufficient to dampen obesity-related phenotypes in DIO mice, and in fact exacerbates weight gain and hyperphagia. The data further suggest that putative anti-obesity properties of dairy emanate from food components beyond Ca.</p
