Standardising Morphological Trait Schemes: Introducing the Global Ant Database
Dendrochronology is based on the study of tree-ring pattern variations in relation
to time and is at present the only dating technique that provides dates with annual or
sub-annual resolution. Due to the climatic signal contained in these patterns, it is also
possible to determine the provenance of the wood through comparison of tree-ring
series derived from the objects under study with appropriate master chronologies. By
allowing such a precise dating of wooden materials, dendrochronology is a fundamental
tool used in archaeological and historical investigations. In this work, dendrochronology
was used to date and to determine the provenance of wooden finds derived from two
archaeological excavations in the Netherlands: the Martinikerkhof (St. Martin’s
churchyard) situated in Groningen and from Dorestad (present Wijk Bij Duurstede).
With the same aim, we investigated samples from the structural timbers of historical
buildings from the city of Venlo, also located in the Netherlands.
The 26 researched coffins from the Martinikerkhof had been built from oak
timbers (Quercus sp.) derived from trees grown in different regions of Germany and
France. Furthermore, the dates determined indicated that the excavated section of the
churchyard was used as a burial ground since the mid 16th century until at least, the
second half of the 18th century.
From the ancient town of Dorestad, 43 barrels found reused as water wells were
investigated and determined to have been built either with silver fir (Abies alba Mill. )
or with oak wood (Quercus sp.). The oak wood was derived from trees grown in forests
of western Germany. Both kinds of barrels were contemporary and dated around the 8th
century, the exception being one of the oak barrels, which dated to the 12th century.
Oak (Quercus sp.) was the only species found among the wood employed in the
construction of the 12 researched buildings from the town of Venlo. The determined
provenances suggest the timbers would have been harvested from Belgium forests,
while in other cases it would have come from Germany, and south of The Netherlands.
Only one of the buildings could not be dated. However, the dating results for the rest
placed their construction in the Medieval and early Modern periods, meaning they had
survived the second World War bombardments.
segunda metade do século XVIII.
datou no século XII.
As proveniências
Effects of habitat disturbance on the morphology of ant assemblages
Introduction: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) belongs to the Hepevirus genus from the Hepeviridae
family. HEV is a non-enveloped small icosahedral virus with 30-32 nm of diameter and a (+)
ssRNA genome. There are four genotypes (1-4) of the virus, genotype 1 and 2 are
associated with exclusive infection on humans, while genotype 3 and 4 can also infect pigs
and other mammalians. HEV is responsible for a liver disease, generally an acute hepatitis,
most frequent in developing countries, where the main way of transmission of HEV is fecaloral
through the ingestion of contaminated water or food. In other regions genotypes 3 and
4 may be causing outbreaks of infection through its zoonotic potential.
Aim: Evaluate the prevalence of HEV infection in wild boars and deer as well as to its
presence in wastewaters, in order to evaluate the risk for the public health caused by HEV,
in Portugal.
Methods: Thirty samples of wild boar and deer feces, 28 bile samples of wild boars and 30
wastewaters samples (15 samples collected from the influent of the WWTP and 15 samples
of the respective effluent of the WWTP) from across country, were submitted to nucleicacid
extraction followed by RT-PCR Real Time amplifications aiming the detection of the
viral genome of HEV.
Results: No HEV-RNA was detected in all feces and bile samples from wild animals.
Two (13.3%) out of the 15 influent WWTP samples revealed the presence of HEV-RNA,
while the viral genome was not detected in any of the effluent samples.
Conclusion: We find that HEV is not spread across the population of Portuguese wild
boars. Nevertheless we acquired that HEV is in fact present in our country which can cause
outbreaks by contaminated water ingestion. We must be alert to HEV infections, even if
most of them are asymptomatic, there is a high risk for pregnant women and for
immunosuppressed population, and until the moment no effective and risk free treatment is
available either to a possible chronic infection or even to a clinical symptomatic infection for
the general population.
Existem 4 genótipos do vírus (1-4).

The arterial hypertension is the main modifiable risk factor for morbimortality of cardiovascular diseases, the main cause of death worldwide. Given the increase of its prevalence with age, the arterial hypertension in the elderly is becoming increasingly frequent. The arterial stiffness and endothelial dysfunction are the pathophysiological basis of the arterial hypertension in the elderly, although it cannot be neglect the higher incidence of secondary causes. The pharmacological treatment of arterial hypertension in the elderly is recommended considering its effects on the reduction of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. The blood pressure target recommended for these patients is 150/90 mmHg, due to the lack of benefits in a stricter blood pressure control. There is no evidence supporting the preferential utilization of a pharmacological class or combination. The major focus should be on blood pressure reduction and not on the agent used. Patients with comorbidities or from special populations may have specific pharmacologial indications and different target values. The therapy’s adverse reactions are more frequent in the elderly. Thus, the hypertensive elderly must maintain vigilance to identify early the adverse reactions and increase the therapeutic adherenc

Digital Inclusion Across the Americas and Caribbean
This research brings together digital inequality scholars from across the Americas and Caribbean to examine efforts to tackle digital inequality in Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, the United States, and Canada. As the case studies show, governmental policy has an important role to play in reducing digital disparities, particularly for potential users in rural or remote areas, as well as populations with great economic disparities. We find that public policy can effectively reduce access gaps when it combines the trifecta of network, device, and skill provision, especially through educational institutions. We also note, that urban populations have benefitted from digital inclusion strategies to a greater degree. This underscores that, no matter the national context, rural-urban digital inequality (and often associated economic inequality) is resistant to change. Even when access is provided, potential users may not find it affordable, lack skills, and/or see no benefit in adoption. We see the greatest potential for future digital inclusion in two related approaches: 1) initiatives that connect with hard-to-reach, remote, and rural communities outside urban cores and 2) initiatives that learn from communities about how best to provide digital resources while respecting their diversely situated contexts, while meeting social, economic and political needs
