Upper limits on K-band polarization in three high-redshift radio galaxies: LBDS 53W091, 3C 441 and MRC 0156-252
We present the results of K-band imaging polarimetry of three radio galaxies,
including the very red and apparently old z=1.55 galaxy 53W091. We find weak
evidence for polarization in components of 3C 441 and in the south-east
companion of 53W091, but no evidence of significant polarization in 53W091
itself. We also find strong evidence that MRC 0156-252 is unpolarised. We
present upper limits for the K-band polarization of all three sources. For
53W091, the lack of significant K-band polarization provides further confidence
that its red R-K colour can be attributed to a mature stellar population,
consistent with the detailed analyses of its ultraviolet spectral-energy
distribution which indicate a minimum age of 2-3.5 Gyr.Comment: 7 pages, 3 postscript figures. In press at MNRA
A Combined EIS-NVSS Survey Of Radio Sources (CENSORS) III: Spectroscopic observations
The Combined EIS-NVSS Survey Of Radio Sources (CENSORS) is a 1.4GHz radio
survey selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and complete to a
flux-density of 7.2mJy. It targets the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) Patch D, which
is a 3 by 2 square degree field centred on 09 51 36.0, -21 00 00 (J2000). This
paper presents the results of spectroscopic observations of 143 of the 150
CENSORS sources. The primary motivation for these observations is to achieve
sufficient spectroscopic completeness so that the sample may be used to
investigate the evolution of radio sources.
The observations result in secure spectroscopic redshifts for 63% of the
sample and likely redshifts (based on a single emission line, for example) for
a further 8%. Following the identification of the quasars and star-forming
galaxies in the CENSORS sample, estimated redshifts are calculated for the
remainder of the sample via the K-z relation for radio galaxies. Comparison of
the redshift distribution of the CENSORS radio sources to distributions
predicted by the various radio luminosity function evolution models of Dunlop &
Peacock 1990, results in no good match. This demonstrates that this sample can

Cosmology with redshift surveys of radio sources
We use the K-z relation for radio galaxies to illustrate why it has proved
difficult to obtain definitive cosmological results from studies based entirely
on catalogues of the brightest radio sources, e.g. 3C. To improve on this
situation we have been undertaking redshift surveys of complete samples drawn
from the fainter 6C and 7C radio catalogues. We describe these surveys, and
illustrate the new studies they are allowing. We also discuss our `filtered' 6C
redshift surveys: these have led to the discovery of a radio galaxy at z=4.4,
and are sensitive to similar objects at higher redshift provided the space
density of these objects is not declining too rapidly with z. There is
currently no direct evidence for a sharp decline in the space density of radio
galaxies for z > 4, a result only barely consistent with the observed decline

Genome-Wide Methylation Profiling in 229 Patients With Crohn's Disease Requiring Intestinal Resection:Epigenetic Analysis of the Trial of Prevention of Post-operative Crohn's Disease (TOPPIC)
Background & AimsDNA methylation alterations may provide important insights into gene-environment interaction in cancer, aging, and complex diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aim first to determine whether the circulating DNA methylome in patients requiring surgery may predict Crohn’s disease (CD) recurrence following intestinal resection; and second to compare the circulating methylome seen in patients with established CD with that we had reported in a series of inception cohorts.MethodsTOPPIC was a placebo-controlled, randomized controlled trial of 6-mercaptopurine at 29 UK centers in patients with CD undergoing ileocolic resection between 2008 and 2012. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood samples from 229 of the 240 patients taken before intestinal surgery and analyzed using 450KHumanMethylation and Infinium Omni Express Exome arrays (Illumina, San Diego, CA). Coprimary objectives were to determine whether methylation alterations may predict clinical disease recurrence; and to assess whether the epigenetic alterations previously reported in newly diagnosed IBD were present in the patients with CD recruited into the TOPPIC study. Differential methylation and variance analysis was performed comparing patients with and without clinical evidence of recurrence. Secondary analyses included investigation of methylation associations with smoking, genotype (MeQTLs), and chronologic age. Validation of our previously published case-control observation of the methylome was performed using historical control data (CD, n = 123; Control, n = 198).ResultsCD recurrence in patients following surgery is associated with 5 differentially methylated positions (Holm P < .05), including probes mapping to WHSC1 (P = 4.1 × 10-9, Holm P = .002) and EFNA3 (P = 4.9 × 10-8, Holm P = .02). Five differentially variable positions are demonstrated in the group of patients with evidence of disease recurrence including a probe mapping to MAD1L1 (P = 6.4 × 10-5). DNA methylation clock analyses demonstrated significant age acceleration in CD compared with control subjects (GrimAge + 2 years; 95% confidence interval, 1.2–2.7 years), with some evidence for accelerated aging in patients with CD with disease recurrence following surgery (GrimAge +1.04 years; 95% confidence interval, -0.04 to 2.22). Significant methylation differences between CD cases and control subjects were seen by comparing this cohort in conjunction with previously published control data, including validation of our previously described differentially methylated positions (RPS6KA2 P = 1.2 × 10-19, SBNO2 = 1.2 × 10-11) and regions (TXK [false discovery rate, P = 3.6 × 10-14], WRAP73 [false discovery rate, P = 1.9 × 10-9], VMP1 [false discovery rate, P = 1.7 × 10-7], and ITGB2 [false discovery rate, P = 1.4 × 10-7]).ConclusionsWe demonstrate differential methylation and differentially variable methylation in patients developing clinical recurrence within 3 years of surgery. Moreover, we report replication of the CD-associated methylome, previously characterized only in adult and pediatric inception cohorts, in patients with medically refractory disease needing surgery
Cross-Correlation of the Cosmic Microwave Background with Radio Sources: Constraints on an Accelerating Universe
We present a new limit on the cosmological constant based on the absence of
correlations between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the distribution
of distant radio sources. In the cosmological constant-cold dark matter models
currently favored, such correlations should have been produced via the
integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, assuming that radio sources trace the local
(z=1) matter density. We find no evidence of correlations between the COBE 53Hz
microwave map and the NVSS 1.4 GHz radio survey. The implied 95% CL limit on
the cosmological constant is Lambda < 0.74, in marginal agreement with the
values suggested by recent measurements of the CMB anisotropy and type-IA
supernovae observations, 0.6 < Lambda < 0.7. If the cosmological model does lie
in this range, then the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect should be detectable with
upcoming CMB maps and radio surveys.Comment: 5 pages; 3 figures; submitted to PR
The star-formation histories of elliptical galaxies across the fundamental plane
We present the first results from a study designed to test whether, given
high-quality spectrophotometry spanning the mid-UV--optical wavelength regime,
it is possible to distinguish the metal content (Z) and star-formation history
(sfh) of individual elliptical galaxies with sufficient accuracy to establish
whether their formation history is linked to their detailed morphology and
position on the Fundamental Plane. From a detailed analysis of UV-optical
spectrophotometry of the `cuspy' elliptical galaxy NGC 3605 and the giant
elliptical NGC 5018 we find that: 1) optical spectra with l > 3500 A may not
contain sufficient data to robustly uncover all the stellar populations present
in individual galaxies, even in such relatively passive objects as ellipticals,
2) the addition of the UV data approaching l = 2500 A holds the key to
establishing well-constrained sfhs, from which we can infer a formation and
evolution history which is consistent with their photometric properties, 3)
despite the superficial similarity of their spectra, the two galaxies have very
different `recent' sfhs -- the smaller, cuspy elliptical NGC 3605 contains a
high-Z population of age ~= 1 Gyr, and has a position on the fundamental plane
typical of the product of a low-z gas-rich merger (most likely at z ~ 0.08),
while the giant elliptical NGC 5018, with a sub-solar secondary population,
appears to have gained its more recent stars via mass transfer / accretion of
gas from its spiral companion, 4) despite these differences in detailed
history, more than 85% of the stellar mass of both galaxies is associated with
an old (9-12 Gyr) stellar population of near-solar Z. This pilot study provides
strong motivation for the construction and analysis of high-quality UV-optical

Linking stellar mass and star formation in Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron galaxies
We present deep Ks<21.5 (Vega) identifications, redshifts and stellar masses
for most of the sources composing the bulk of the 24 micron background in the
GOODS/CDFS. Our identified sample consists of 747 Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron
objects, and includes ~94% of all the 24 micron sources in the GOODS-South
field which have fluxes Snu(24)>83 microJy (the 80% completeness limit of the
Spitzer/GTO 24 micron catalog). 36% of our galaxies have spectroscopic
redshifts (mostly at z<1.5) and the remaining ones have photometric redshifts
of very good quality, with a median of |dz|=|zspec-zphot|/(1+zspec)=0.02. We
find that MIPS 24 micron galaxies span the redshift range z~0-4, and that a
substantial fraction (28%) lie at high redshifts z>1.5. We determine the
existence of a bump in the redshift distribution at z~1.9, indicating the
presence of a significant population of galaxies with PAH emission at these
redshifts. Massive (M>10^11 Msun) star-forming galaxies at redshifts 2<z<3 are
characterized by very high star-formation rates (SFR>500 Msun/yr), and some of
them are able to construct a mass of 10^10-10^11 Msun in a single burst
lifetime (~0.01-0.1 Gyr). At lower redshifts z<2, massive star-forming galaxies
are also present, but appear to be building their stars on long timescales,
either quiescently or in multiple modest burst-like episodes. At redshifts
z~1-2, the ability of the burst-like mode to produce entire galaxies in a
single event is limited to some lower (M<7x10^10 Msun) mass systems, and it is
basically negligible at z<1. Our results support a scenario where
star-formation activity is differential with assembled stellar mass and
redshift, and where the relative importance of the burst-like mode proceeds in

Radio Galaxy Clustering at z~0.3
Radio galaxies are uniquely useful as probes of large-scale structure as
their uniform identification with giant elliptical galaxies out to high
redshift means that the evolution of their bias factor can be predicted. As the
initial stage in a project to study large-scale structure with radio galaxies
we have performed a small redshift survey, selecting 29 radio galaxies in the
range 0.19<z<0.45 from a contiguous 40 square degree area of sky. We detect
significant clustering within this sample. The amplitude of the two-point
correlation function we measure is consistent with no evolution from the local
(z<0.1) value. This is as expected in a model in which radio galaxy hosts form
at high redshift and thereafter obey a continuity equation, although the
signal:noise of the detection is too low to rule out other models. Larger
surveys out to z~1 should reveal the structures of superclusters at
intermediate redshifts and strongly constrain models for the evolution of

The nuclear to host galaxy relation of high redshift quasars
We present near-infrared imaging with ESO VLT+ISAAC of the host galaxies of
low luminosity quasars in the redshift range 1 < z < 2, aimed at investigating
the relationship between the nuclear and host galaxy luminosities at high
redshift. This work complements our previous study to trace the cosmological
evolution of the host galaxies of high luminosity quasars (Falomo et al. 2004).
The new sample includes 15 low luminosity quasars, nine radio-loud (RLQ) and
six radio-quiet (RQQ). They have similar distribution of redshift and optical
luminosity, and together with the high luminosity quasars they cover a large
range (~4 mag) of the quasar luminosity function. The host galaxies of both
types of quasars are in the range of massive inactive ellipticals between L*
and 10 L*. RLQ hosts are systematically more luminous than RQQ hosts by a
factor of ~2. This difference is similar to that found for the high luminosity
quasars. This luminosity gap appears to be independent of the rest-frame U-band
luminosity but clearly correlated with the rest-frame R-band luminosity. The
color difference between the RQQs and the RLQs is likely a combination of an
intrinsic difference in the strength of the thermal and nonthermal components
in the SEDs of RLQs and RQQs, and a selection effect due to internal dust
extinction. For the combined set of quasars, we find a reasonable correlation
between the nuclear and the host luminosities. This correlation is less
apparent for RQQs than for RLQs. If the R-band luminosity is representative of
the bolometric luminosity, and assuming that the host luminosity is
proportional to the black hole mass, as observed in nearby massive spheroids,
quasars emit with a relatively narrow range of power with respect to their
Eddington luminosity and with the same distribution for RLQs and RQQs.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 24 pages, 4 figure
