Using mutual information to measure order in model glass-formers
Whether or not there is growing static order accompanying the dynamical
heterogeneity and increasing relaxation times seen in glassy systems is a
matter of dispute. An obstacle to resolving this issue is that the order is
expected to be amorphous and so not amenable to simple order parameters. We use
mutual information to provide a general measurement of order that is sensitive
to multi-particle correlations. We apply this to two glass-forming systems (2D
binary mixtures of hard disks with different size ratios to give varying
amounts of hexatic order) and show that there is little growth of amorphous
order in the system without crystalline order. In both cases we measure the
dynamical length with a four-point correlation function and find that it
increases significantly faster than the static lengths in the system as density
is increased. We further show that we can recover the known scaling of the
dynamic correlation length in a kinetically constrained model, the 2-TLG.Comment: 10 pages, 12 Figure
A Source of Bacterial Blight Resistance For Soybeans
Incidence of bacterial blight of soybeans was observed from 1953 to 1959. During this period the disease was observed in 25 to 72 percent of the fields examined. A search was made for an improved source of blight resistance. A soybean introduction, P.I. 68708 was resistant to blight under natural conditions and when inoculated. It was also resistant to brown spot but was susceptible to race 8 of Peronospora manshurica as well as to Phytophthora rot. Yield, date of maturity, seed size, seed quality, and lodging resistance of the introduction were comparable to the same characters of the variety Blackhawk
On the Exponentials of Some Structured Matrices
In this note explicit algorithms for calculating the exponentials of
important structured 4 x 4 matrices are provided. These lead to closed form
formulae for these exponentials. The techniques rely on one particular Clifford
Algebra isomorphism and basic Lie theory. When used in conjunction with
structure preserving similarities, such as Givens rotations, these techniques
extend to dimensions bigger than four.Comment: 19 page

Housing theory, housing research and housing policy
Jim Kemeny in 1992 criticised existing housing research for neglecting social theory and being overly positivist and policy focused. The result has been a strengthening of the conceptual basis of housing research in general, but also a growing schism between researchers who focus on policy relevancy and those that pursue more theoretical work. This paper challenges this schism and argues for theoretically based and policy relevant research. First the paper argues that the policy-making process is complex and can vary between different countries, situations and over time. Therefore, it is argued that many styles of research can influence policy in the right circumstances. Second, the paper challenges the idea that there can be theoretically-free housing research arguing that all research has a theoretical foundation even though in many studies it is not explicit. Finally, the paper engages with the debate about where theory for housing research should come from and what it would look like
DEVELOPMENT OF CONTAINER MATERIALS FOR LAMPRE APPLICATIONS
Some 53 high-purity binary tantalum-base alloys were prepared and evaluated as candidate materials of construc tion for the Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor Experiment. Preliminary data indicate that good resistance to attack by the fuels can be obtained by alloying tantalum. Alloys containing additions of rhenium and tungsten showed good corrosion resistance in polythermal (1352 to 1022 deg F) tilting-furnace exposures. Tantalum--yttrium alloys also displayed good corrosion resistance, even though the yttrium apparently was lost during arc melting. Most of the alloys, including those which showed good corrosion resistance, were amenable to arc melting and casting and fabrication at room temperature. (auth
The difference that tenure makes
This paper argues that housing tenures cannot be reduced to either production relations or consumption relations. Instead, they need to be understood as modes of housing distribution, and as having complex and dynamic relations with social classes. Building on a critique of both the productionist and the consumptionist literature, as well as of formalist accounts of the relations between tenure and class, the paper attempts to lay the foundations for a new theory of housing tenure. In order to do this, a new theory of class is articulated, which is then used to throw new light on the nature of class-tenure relations
Creating citizen-consumers? Public service reform and (un)willing selves
About the book: Postmodern theories heralded the "death of the subject", and thereby deeply contested our intuition that we are free and willing selves. In recent times, the (free) will has come under attack yet again. Findings from the neuro- and cognitive sciences claim the concept of will to be scientifically untenable, specifying that it is our brain rather than our 'self' which decides what we want to do. In spite of these challenges however, the willing self has come to take centre stage in our society: juridical and moral practices ascribing guilt, or the organization of everyday life attributing responsibilities, for instance, can hardly be understood without taking recourse to the willing subject.
In this vein, the authors address topics such as the genealogy of the concept of willing selves, the discourse on agency in neuroscience and sociology, the political debate on volition within neoliberal and neoconservative regimes, approaches toward novel forms of relational responsibility as well as moral evaluations in conceptualizing autonomy
Forty years studying British politics : the decline of Anglo-America
The still present belief some 40 years ago that British politics was both exceptional and superior has been replaced by more theoretically sophisticated analyses based on a wider and more rigorously deployed range of research techniques, although historical analysis appropriately remains important. The American influence on the study of British politics has declined, but the European Union dimension has not been fully integrated. The study of interest groups has been in some respects a fading paradigm, but important questions related to democratic health have still to be addressed. Public administration has been supplanted by public policy, but economic policy remains under-studied. A key challenge for the future is the study of the management of expectations
A pragmatic harm reduction approach to manage a large outbreak of wound botulism in people who inject drugs, Scotland 2015
Abstract Background People who inject drugs (PWID) are at an increased risk of wound botulism, a potentially fatal acute paralytic illness. During the first 6Â months of 2015, a large outbreak of wound botulism was confirmed among PWID in Scotland, which resulted in the largest outbreak in Europe to date. Methods A multidisciplinary Incident Management Team (IMT) was convened to conduct an outbreak investigation, which consisted of enhanced surveillance of cases in order to characterise risk factors and identify potential sources of infection. Results Between the 24th of December 2014 and the 30th of May 2015, a total of 40 cases were reported across six regions in Scotland. The majority of the cases were male, over 30 and residents in Glasgow. All epidemiological evidence suggested a contaminated batch of heroin or cutting agent as the source of the outbreak. There are significant challenges associated with managing an outbreak among PWID, given their vulnerability and complex addiction needs. Thus, a pragmatic harm reduction approach was adopted which focused on reducing the risk of infection for those who continued to inject and limited consequences for those who got infected. Conclusions The management of this outbreak highlighted the importance and need for pragmatic harm reduction interventions which support the addiction needs of PWID during an outbreak of spore-forming bacteria. Given the scale of this outbreak, the experimental learning gained during this and similar outbreaks involving spore-forming bacteria in the UK was collated into national guidance to improve the management and investigation of future outbreaks among PWID
