    This thesis explores pattern juxtaposition using traditional American quilt block designs as the compositional basis for nine works pieced from screen printed paper. In the 1970s, the quilt was celebrated for its apparent connection to Modernist design and was reclaimed by many feminist artists including Miriam Schapiro as a symbol of the exclusion of women\u27s crafts from the arts hierarchy. The tension between these two perspectives continues today in the contemporary art quilt movement. Block designs are tightly organized, relying on grids and repeated geometric forms to communicate multiple patterns simultaneously. Controlled placement of light and dark pieces can create effects like counterchange, a frequently employed illusion which occurs when the mind shifts repeatedly between positive and negative shapes. Counterchange perplexes by suggesting that more than one pattern can occupy the same visual space

    Objectives: We review outcome studies regarding the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Method: Studies were identified through electronic bibliographic databases and manual searches of article reference lists. Results: A total of 8 studies met eligibility criteria, consisting of three randomized controlled trials (RCTs), one quasi-experimental study involving a comparison group, two pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest studies, and two single-system designs. Studies reviewed did not offer credible evidence to suggest that HBOT is an effective treatment for autism. Conclusion: It is premature to call HBOT an effective treatment for Autism and ASD. Individuals clinically treated with HBOT outside the context of a RCT should have the effects of the therapy evaluated using rigorous single-subject designs

    People who inject drugs experiences of skin and soft tissue infections and harm reduction: A qualitative study.

    Background: Bacterial skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) among people who inject drugs (PWID) are considered a public health concern. There is a lack of qualitative research examining the lived experience of PWID who have had SSTI. This paper explores PWID views and experiences of their SSTI, their perceptions on the causes of their SSTI and their harm reduction (HR) behaviours. The implications for HR service delivery and practice will be discussed. Methods: Between October 2015-January 2016, 22 in-depth interviews were conducted with PWID who had experienced a SSTI within the past year. Interviewees were recruited from an injecting equipment provision service and a drug treatment service in Glasgow and Edinburgh respectively. The interview transcripts were transcribed verbatim and underwent thematic analysis. Results: We found that the experience of SSTI can cause strong negative feelings, including panic and stigma and that there was limited knowledge of SSTI prior to first hand experience. The awareness of the unacceptable social and physical consequences of SSTI fostered a sense of personal responsibility and agency which led to the introduction or improved HR uptake. However, when PWID were struggling to inject or when their physical and political environments were compromised there was an increased risk for SSTI and reduced effectiveness of HR. Conclusion: Compared to HCV and HIV, SSTI as an injecting related harm has received less policy attention. Policy makers need to address SSTI HR within enabling environments, such as ‘safer environment interventions’. It is recommended that peer based support, improved NSP provision and medically supervised injecting facilities are needed to deliver SSTI HR

    A thematic analysis of the family experience of British mainstream school SEND inclusion: can their voices inform best practice?

    Inclusion of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the UK mainstream school provision has been identified as a human right in the United Nations Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The UK Children and Families Act of 2014 stipulates that children in mainstream school provision must have access to appropriate SEND support, and it protects the families right to be included in these decisions. The present study investigates the parent perspective of mainstream school SEND inclusion, highlighting the impact on family life. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes from the data, derived from answers to open-ended questions presented in a questionnaire format. Master themes recorded were: the family experience of (1) discrimination, (2) lack of diversity and inclusion awareness from others, (3) advocacy, (4) well-being and mental-health decline (including economic decline) and (5) damage to the family relationships. This study unearthed that adherence to the SEND legislation has been sorely misunderstood by some schools. Future research could investigate the relation between the level of inclusion training that staff have received, with staff attitudes towards inclusion and the well-being of families experiencing SEND inclusion to inform teacher training

    Giving voters what they want? Party orientation perceptions and preferences in the British electorate

    Some of the most important propositions in the political marketing literature hinge on assumptions about the electorate. In particular, voters are presumed to react in different ways to different orientations or postures. Yet there are theoretical reasons for questioning some of these assumptions, and certainly they have seldom been empirically tested. Here, we focus on one prominent example of political marketing research: Lees-Marshment’s orientations’ model. We investigate how the public reacts to product and market orientation, whether they see a trade-off between the two (a point in dispute among political marketing scholars), and whether partisans differ from non-partisan voters by being more inclined to value product over market orientation. Evidence from two mass sample surveys of the British public (both conducted online by YouGov) demonstrates important heterogeneity within the electorate, casts doubt on the core assumptions underlying some political marketing arguments and raises broader questions about what voters are looking for in a party

    Applying Models to National Surveys of Undergraduate Science Students: What Affects Ratings of Satisfaction?

    Many countries use national-level surveys to capture student opinions about their university experiences. It is necessary to interpret survey results in an appropriate context to inform decision-making at many levels. To provide context to national survey outcomes, we describe patterns in the ratings of science and engineering subjects from the UK’s National Student Survey (NSS). New, robust statistical models describe relationships between the Overall Satisfaction’ rating and the preceding 21 core survey questions. Subjects exhibited consistent differences and ratings of “Teaching”, “Organisation” and “Support” were thematic predictors of “Overall Satisfaction” and the best single predictor was “The course was well designed and running smoothly”. General levels of satisfaction with feedback were low, but questions about feedback were ultimately the weakest predictors of “Overall Satisfaction”. The UK’s universities affiliated groupings revealed that more traditional “1994” and “Russell” groups over-performed in a model using the core 21 survey questions to predict “Overall Satisfaction”, in contrast to the under-performing newer universities in the Million+ and Alliance groups. Findings contribute to the debate about “level playing fields” for the interpretation of survey outcomes worldwide in terms of differences between subjects, institutional types and the questionnaire items

    On the Exponentials of Some Structured Matrices

    In this note explicit algorithms for calculating the exponentials of important structured 4 x 4 matrices are provided. These lead to closed form formulae for these exponentials. The techniques rely on one particular Clifford Algebra isomorphism and basic Lie theory. When used in conjunction with structure preserving similarities, such as Givens rotations, these techniques extend to dimensions bigger than four.Comment: 19 page
