Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is considered innovative in foreign language teaching. However, the body of research on TBLT employment in vocabulary instruction is still modest. This study explored teachers’ beliefs and practices regarding vocabulary instruction using TBLT. This study examined such application among Vietnamese high-school EFL teachers (N = 60) using a mixed methods research design. Data were collected using online questionnaires. Data analysis showed that 53.6% of the participating teachers associated vocabulary instruction with TBLT. However, regardless of their years as instructors, they still found it challenging to implement TBLT vocabulary instruction due to numerous factors. In fact, 66.2% of the participating teachers acknowledged a variety of constraints in applying TBLT, among which, exam-oriented curricula were reported as the biggest impediment

Essays on financial integration, natural disasters, and commercial banks in East Asia

The thesis examines the impact of financial integration on commercial banks in East Asia. The thesis comprises three essays examining the relationship between financial integration and bank cost efficiency, financial integration and bank default risk, and the moderating role of financial integration on the impact of natural disasters on bank performance. More specifically, the first essay tests whether there is a non-monotonic relationship between financial integration and bank cost efficiency. A sample of commercial banks from nine East Asian countries over the period 1997–2014 is examined. This is the first study to apply the non-monotonic stochastic frontier model to this relationship. The essay consistently reports a non-monotonic impact of financial integration on bank cost efficiency. Financial integration contributes to the improvement in bank cost efficiency up to a threshold. The model suggests that when the foreign claims are greater than 100% of GDP and when more than 40% of banks are non-domestic, a further increase in financial integration becomes efficiency-impeding. The second essay examines the impact of different forms of financial integration on bank default risk. Using the system generalized method of moments (GMM) and sampling eight East Asian countries during 1999–2014, the essay finds that financial integration lowers bank default risk in the recipient countries. The impact is primarily driven by the foreign claims extended by Asian lenders and the foreign claims extended via local affiliates. These results show that close proximity of lenders and borrowers or ‘local’ knowledge via an affiliate presence alleviates information asymmetry, allowing for effective monitoring and disciplining of the loan relationship. The result supports the fostering of financial integration, promoting deeper intra-regional connectedness throughout East Asia. Where foreign claims come from outside East Asia, policy makers should encourage presence through local affiliates, as this has an equivalent impact. The third essay analyses the impact of natural disasters on commercial bank performance and the moderating impact of financial integration on the relationship. Commercial banks from seven East Asian countries during 1999–2014 are sampled. The system GMM regression reveals that natural disasters significantly lower the deposits ratio but have no contemporaneous relationship with liquidity, credit risk, profitability, and default risk. The essay also shows that foreign banking claims, specifically those extended by Asian lenders, help to alleviate the deposits decline in the aftermath of natural disasters. These results highlight the role of commercial bank deposits and foreign banking claims as sources of finance for post-disaster recovery. The resilience of the Asian foreign claims in the event of local shocks also provides evidence to support deeper intra-regional financial integration in East Asia

Vietnam launched the national Expanded Program on Immunization in 1981. Since then, this program has contributed signi cantly to the improvement of child health and to the reduction of child mortality rate. Despite of the fact that the coverage of the national EPI keeps expanding, the number of children who complied with the recommended immunization schedule remains low. This article studies the progress of the timeliness childhood immunization compliance among children between 0-5 years of age in Vietnam from 2006 to 2014 and analyzes the socio-economic factors that account for the changes of the compliance rate during this period. The dataset is extracted from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey in 2006 and 2014. We rst identify the socio-economic factors that impact on the vaccination compliance rate using a logistic regression model. Next, we apply the decomposition method to determine the contribution of each factor on the evolution of the timeliness childhood immunization compliance. The progress of the timeliness childhood immunization has been positive and the major contribution comes from the structure e ect (unmeasured e ect). Rural areas show a stronger improvement as of 2014. Among the socio-economic factors, mother education and birth order are the ones that have the larger in uence on the childhood immunization compliance rate. However, these factors have di erent implications in urban and rural areas. These ndings are critical to the current context of Vietnam where the government is designing a strategy focusing on the e ectiveness rather than the traditional coverage indicator

This study investigates the impairment of assets on financial reportings of three separate entities - Vietnam Prosperity Joint-Stock Commercial Bank (VPBank), The Bank of East Asia (BEA) and The Nestlé Group - in the financial year of 2017. By bringing out the differences between international accounting system of asset impairment (IAS 36) and Vietnamese accounting system (VAS), this research has determined the gap between two sets of financial statements under IFRS and VAS in conveying the business performance and financial position. The empirical results show Vietnam’s necessary for a convergence in asset impairment with international accounting system. Therefore, we provide some recommendations for Vietnam in applying asset impairment regarding to IAS 36 partly or completely.
