Noncompact sigma-models: Large N expansion and thermodynamic limit
Noncompact SO(1,N) sigma-models are studied in terms of their large N
expansion in a lattice formulation in dimensions d \geq 2. Explicit results for
the spin and current two-point functions as well as for the Binder cumulant are
presented to next to leading order on a finite lattice. The dynamically
generated gap is negative and serves as a coupling-dependent infrared regulator
which vanishes in the limit of infinite lattice size. The cancellation of
infrared divergences in invariant correlation functions in this limit is
nontrivial and is in d=2 demonstrated by explicit computation for the above
quantities. For the Binder cumulant the thermodynamic limit is finite and is
given by 2/(N+1) in the order considered. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that
the remainder is small or zero. The potential implications for ``criticality''
and ``triviality'' of the theories in the SO(1,N) invariant sector are
discussed.Comment: 46 pages, 2 figure
Simulation verification techniques study. Subsystem simulation validation techniques
Techniques for validation of software modules which simulate spacecraft onboard systems are discussed. An overview of the simulation software hierarchy for a shuttle mission simulator is provided. A set of guidelines for the identification of subsystem/module performance parameters and critical performance parameters are presented. Various sources of reference data to serve as standards of performance for simulation validation are identified. Environment, crew station, vehicle configuration, and vehicle dynamics simulation software are briefly discussed from the point of view of their interfaces with subsystem simulation modules. A detailed presentation of results in the area of vehicle subsystems simulation modules is included. A list of references, conclusions and recommendations are also given
Simulation verification techniques study: Simulation performance validation techniques document
Techniques and support software for the efficient performance of simulation validation are discussed. Overall validation software structure, the performance of validation at various levels of simulation integration, guidelines for check case formulation, methods for real time acquisition and formatting of data from an all up operational simulator, and methods and criteria for comparison and evaluation of simulation data are included. Vehicle subsystems modules, module integration, special test requirements, and reference data formats are also described
Causes of exotic bird establishment across oceanic islands
The probability that exotic species will successfully establish viable populations varies between regions, for reasons that are currently unknown. Here, we use data for exotic bird introductions to 41 oceanic islands and archipelagos around the globe to test five hypotheses for this variation: the effects of introduction effort, competition, predation, human disturbance and habitat diversity (island biogeography). Our analyses demonstrate the primary importance of introduction effort for avian establishment success across regions, in concordance with previous analyses within regions. However, they also reveal a strong negative interaction across regions between establishment success and predation; exotic birds are more likely to fail on islands with species-rich mammalian predator assemblages
Mass-radius relation for magnetized strange quark stars
We review the stability of magnetized strange quark matter (MSQM) within the
phenomenological MIT bag model, taking into account the variation of the
relevant input parameters, namely, the strange quark mass, baryon density,
magnetic field and bag parameter. A comparison with magnetized asymmetric quark
matter in -equilibrium as well as with strange quark matter (SQM) is
presented. We obtain that the energy per baryon for MSQM decreases as the
magnetic field increases, and its minimum value at vanishing pressure is lower
than the value found for SQM, which implies that MSQM is more stable than
non-magnetized SQM. The mass-radius relation for magnetized strange quark stars
is also obtained in this framework.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. To be published in the Proceedings of 4th

Unquenched QCD with Light Quarks
We present recent results in unquenched lattice QCD with two degenerate light
sea quarks using the truncated determinant approximation (TDA). In the TDA the
infrared modes contributing to the quark determinant are computed exactly up to
some cutoff in quark off-shellness (typically 2). This approach
allows simulations to be performed at much lighter quark masses than possible
with conventional hybrid MonteCarlo techniques. Results for the static energy
and topological charge distributions are presented using a large ensemble
generated on very coarse (6) but physically large lattices. Preliminary
results are also reported for the static energy and meson spectrum on 10x20
lattices (lattice scale =1.15 GeV) at quark masses corresponding to
pions of mass 200 MeV. Using multiboson simulation to compute the
ultraviolet part of the quark determinant the TDA approach becomes an exact
with essentially no increase in computational effort. Some preliminary results
using this fully unquenched algorithm are presented.Comment: LateX, 39 pages, 16 eps figures, 1 ps figur
