Local Simulation Algorithms for Coulomb Gases with Dynamical Dielectric Effects
We discuss the application of the local lattice technique of Maggs and
Rossetto to problems that involve the motion of objects with different
dielectric constants than the background. In these systems the simulation
method produces a spurious interaction force which causes the particles to move
in an unphysical manner. We show that this term can be removed using a variant
of a method known from high-energy physics simulations, the multiboson method,
and demonstrate the effectiveness of this corrective method on a system of
neutral particles. We then apply our method to a one-component plasma to show
the effect of the spurious interaction term on a charged system.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Regional differences in store-operated Ca2+ entry in the epithelium of the intact human lens
An elevated level of Ca2+ is an important factor in cataract, yet precisely how Ca2+ enters the lens is unknown. Lens epithelial cells contain a range of G-protein–coupled receptors and receptor tyrosine kinases that induce increases in intracellular Ca2+. Receptor-associated Ca2+ influx is, therefore, likely to be an important route for Ca2+ influx to the lens. The authors investigated stimulated and passive Ca2+ influx in in situ human lens epithelium. Ca2+ changes in equatorial (E) and central anterior (CA) epithelial cells were monitored with the use of a Ca2+ indicator (Fluo4) and confocal microscopy. Gene expression was monitored by RT-PCR and immunoblotting. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) induced Ca2+ responses that were smaller in CA than E. Ca2+ store depletion, using ATP (100 µM) or thapsigargin (1 µM), revealed greater relative store capacity and Ca2+ influx in E. Ca2+ influx was blocked by La3+ (0.5 µM) in both regions. Unstimulated Ca2+ influx was greater in E than CA. Greater expression of Orai1 and STIM1 was detected in E than in CA. Greater Ca2+ store capacity and Ca2+ influx in E compared with CA reflects underlying differences in proliferation and differentiation between the regions. The relatively small resting Ca2+ influx in CA epithelium suggests that store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) is the main route of Ca2+ influx in these cells. Greater resting influx and SOCE in E cells suggests that these are a major route for Ca2+ influx into the lens. Increased expression of Orai1 and STIM1 in E could account for the differences in Ca2+ entry. Receptor activation will modulate Ca2+ influx, and inappropriate activity may contribute to cortical cataract
Automorphisms of Partially Commutative Groups II: Combinatorial Subgroups
We define several "standard" subgroups of the automorphism group Aut(G) of a
partially commutative (right-angled Artin) group and use these standard
subgroups to describe decompositions of Aut(G). If C is the commutation graph
of G, we show how Aut(G) decomposes in terms of the connected components of C:
obtaining a particularly clear decomposition theorem in the special case where
C has no isolated vertices.
If C has no vertices of a type we call dominated then we give a semi-direct
decompostion of Aut(G) into a subgroup of locally conjugating automorphisms by
the subgroup stabilising a certain lattice of "admissible subsets" of the
vertices of C. We then characterise those graphs for which Aut(G) is a product

A Southern Hemisphere radar meteor orbit survey
A meteor radar system has been operated on a routine basis near Christchurch, New Zealand, to determine the orbits of Earth-impacting interplanetary dust and meteoroids. The system sensitivity is +13 visual magnitude, corresponding to approximately 100 micron sized meteoroids. With an orbital precision of 2 degrees in angular elements and 10 percent in orbital energy (1/a), the operation yields an average of 1500 orbits daily with a total to date in excess of 10(exp 5). The use of pc's and automated data reduction permit the large orbital data sets we collect to be routinely reduced. Some illustrative examples are presented of the signal formats/processing and the results of data reduction, giving the individual orbital elements and hence the overall distributions. Current studies include the distribution of dust in the inner solar system; the influx of meteoroids associated with near-Earth asteroids; and the orbital structure existing in comet-produced streams
Risk factors and mortality associated with multimorbidity in people with stroke or transient ischaemic attack: a study of 8,751 UK Biobank participants
Background: Multimorbidity is common in stroke, but the risk factors and effects on mortality remain poorly understood. Objective: To examine multimorbidity and its associations with sociodemographic/lifestyle risk factors and all-cause mortality in UK Biobank participants with stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). Design: Data were obtained from an anonymized community cohort aged 40–72 years. Overall, 42 comorbidities were self-reported by those with stroke or TIA. Relative risk ratios demonstrated associations between participant characteristics and number of comorbidities. Hazard ratios demonstrated associations between the number and type of comorbidities and all-cause mortality. Results were adjusted for age, sex, socioeconomic status, smoking, and alcohol intake. Data were linked to national mortality data. Median follow-up was 7 years. Results: Of 8,751 participants (mean age 60.9±6.7 years) with stroke or TIA, the all-cause mortality rate over 7 years was 8.4%. Over 85% reported ≥1 comorbidities. Age, socioeconomic deprivation, smoking and less frequent alcohol intake were associated with higher levels of multimorbidity. Increasing multimorbidity was associated with higher all-cause mortality. Mortality risk was double for those with ≥5 comorbidities compared to those with none. Having cancer, coronary heart disease, diabetes, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease significantly increased mortality risk. Presence of any cardiometabolic comorbidity significantly increased mortality risk, as did any non-cardiometabolic comorbidity. Conclusions: In stroke survivors, the number of comorbidities may be a more helpful predictor of mortality than type of condition. Stroke guidelines should take greater account of comorbidities, and interventions are needed that improve outcomes for people with multimorbidity and stroke
Periodic Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts from GS 1826-24 and the Fuel Composition as a Function of Accretion Rate
We analyze 24 type I X-ray bursts from GS 1826-24 observed by the Rossi X-ray
Timing Explorer between 1997 November and 2002 July. The bursts observed
between 1997-98 were consistent with a stable recurrence time of 5.74 +/- 0.13
hr. The persistent intensity of GS 1826-24 increased by 36% between 1997-2000,
by which time the burst interval had decreased to 4.10 +/- 0.08 hr. In 2002
July the recurrence time was shorter again, at 3.56 +/- 0.03 hr. The bursts
within each epoch had remarkably identical lightcurves over the full approx.
150 s burst duration; both the initial decay timescale from the peak, and the
burst fluence, increased slightly with the rise in persistent flux. The
decrease in the burst recurrence time was proportional to Mdot^(-1.05+/-0.02)
(where Mdot is assumed to be linearly proportional to the X-ray flux), so that
the ratio alpha between the integrated persistent and burst fluxes was
inversely correlated with Mdot. The average value of alpha was 41.7 +/- 1.6.
Both the alpha value, and the long burst durations indicate that the hydrogen
is burning during the burst via the rapid-proton (rp) process. The variation in
alpha with Mdot implies that hydrogen is burning stably between bursts,
requiring solar metallicity (Z ~ 0.02) in the accreted layer. We show that
solar metallicity ignition models naturally reproduce the observed burst
energies, but do not match the observed variations in recurrence time and burst
fluence. Low metallicity models (Z ~ 0.001) reproduce the observed trends in
recurrence time and fluence, but are ruled out by the variation in alpha. We
discuss possible explanations, including extra heating between bursts, or that
the fraction of the neutron star covered by the accreted fuel increases with

Functional analysis of BARD1 missense variants in homology-directed repair and damage sensitivity
The BARD1 protein, which heterodimerizes with BRCA1, is encoded by a known breast cancer susceptibility gene. While several BARD1 variants have been identified as pathogenic, many more missense variants exist that do not occur frequently enough to assign a clinical risk. In this paper, whole exome sequencing of over 10,000 cancer samples from 33 cancer types identified from somatic mutations and loss of heterozygosity in tumors 76 potentially cancer-associated BARD1 missense and truncation variants. These variants were tested in a functional assay for homology-directed repair (HDR), as HDR deficiencies have been shown to correlate with clinical pathogenicity for BRCA1 variants. From these 76 variants, 4 in the ankyrin repeat domain and 5 in the BRCT domain were found to be non-functional in HDR. Two known benign variants were found to be functional in HDR, and three known pathogenic variants were non-functional, supporting the notion that the HDR assay can be used to predict the clinical risk of BARD1 variants. The identification of HDR-deficient variants in the ankyrin repeat domain indicates there are DNA repair functions associated with this domain that have not been closely examined. In order to examine whether BARD1-associated loss of HDR function results in DNA damage sensitivity, cells expressing non-functional BARD1 variants were treated with ionizing radiation or cisplatin. These cells were found to be more sensitive to DNA damage, and variations in the residual HDR function of non-functional variants did not correlate with variations in sensitivity. These findings improve the understanding of BARD1 functional domains in DNA repair and support that this functional assay is useful for predicting the cancer association of BARD1 variants.</div
Singularity in the boundary resistance between superfluid He and a solid surface
We report new measurements in four cells of the thermal boundary resistance
between copper and He below but near the superfluid-transition
temperature . For fits of to the data yielded ,
whereas a fit to theoretical values based on the renormalization-group theory
yielded . Alternatively, a good fit of the theory to the data could
be obtained if the {\it amplitude} of the prediction was reduced by a factor
close to two. The results raise the question whether the boundary conditions

Patterns of participation over four rounds of annual fecal immunochemical test-based screening for colorectal cancer: what predicts rescreening?
Published online: 01 August 2017Background: Participation at the recommended intervals is critical for screening to be effective in reducing colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence. This study describes patterns of screening participation over four rounds of fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) to identify whether demographic variables and prior screening satisfaction are significantly associated with patterns of re-participation. Methods: Baseline surveys were mailed to 4000 South Australians randomly selected from the electoral-roll. Respondents (n = 1928/48.2%) were offered four annual FIT rounds. Screening participation and satisfaction at each round were recorded. Results: Study participation was 58.5, 66.9, 73.1 and 71.4% respectively over four rounds. Three participation patterns were described: consistent participation (43.1%), consistent non-participation (26.4%) and inconsistent participation (changeable; 30.5%), including intermittent and sustained change patterns. Sustained change described those who changed participatory behavior and then maintained for at least two rounds (n = 375/19.5%). Older people, and those not working were most likely to sustain participation. Younger invitees, especially men, were more likely to change participatory behavior and sustain the change. People with higher disadvantage, less education, not working and with no prior (pre-trial) screening experience were more likely to start participating and drop out. People dissatisfied with a prior screening test, including finding aspects embarrassing or unpleasant, were also more likely not to participate in annual screening or to drop out. Conclusions: The findings identify those at risk of non- or inconsistent participation in rescreening. They should aid targeting of interventions for demographic groups at risk and ensuring screening experiences are not perceived as unpleasant or difficult.Joanne M. Properties of B-Mesons in Lattice QCD
The results of an extensive study of B-meson properties in quenched lattice
QCD are presented. The studies are carried out in the static quark limit where
the b-quark is taken to be infinitely massive. Our computations rely on a
multistate smearing method introduced previously, with smearing functions
generated from a relativistic lattice quark model. Systematic errors arising
from excited state contamination, finite volume effects, and the chiral
extrapolation for the light quarks are estimated. We obtain continuum results
for the mass splitting M_{B_s}- M_{B_u} = 86 (+/-)12(stat) {+7/-9}(syst) MeV,
the ratio of decay constants f_{B_s}/f_{B_u} = 1.22 (+/-)0.04(stat) (+/-)0.02
(syst). For the B-meson decay constant we separately exhibit the sizable
uncertainties in the extrapolation to the continuum limit a -> 0 and higher
order perturbative matching. We obtain f_{B} = 188 (+/-)23(stat) (+/-)15(syst)
{+26/-0}(extrap) (+/-)14 (pert) MeV. ----- [Postscript version of paper
