Ofermod and Aristocratic Chivalry in J.R.R. Tolkien\u27s The Lord of the Rings

This paper explores connections between J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1953 Essays and Studies publication The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son and representations of ofermod and aristocratic “chivalry” in The Lord of the Rings. Focusing on the motivations and leadership-related decisions of Denethor and Faramir in The Lord of the Rings, this paper argues that Faramir\u27s behavior and motivations, despite Denethor’s implications to the contrary, cannot be described in terms of ofermod regardless of the risk that his choice to reject the Ring appears to pose to Gondor. By contrast, Denethor and his son Boromir represent the pride-motivated decision-making and rash heroics that Tolkien ties to ofermod and aristocratic “chivalry” in Homecoming. This becomes particularly apparent through close linguistic analysis of Denethor’s speeches to Faramir and Gandalf in The Return of the King. Ultimately, this paper argues that Denethor’s behavior leading up to and during the siege of Minas Tirith draws out a prominent danger of ofermod in Tolkien’s literature: the ability of the privileged leader to abandon hope on behalf of subordinates. By contrast, Tolkien’s protagonists represent the opposite impulse: they embrace hope on behalf of others, setting the stage for Tolkien’s eucatastrophic interventions

Design, modeling and analysis of object localization through acoustical signals for cognitive electronic travel aid for blind people

Analyzes the structural, aesthetic, and thematic parallels between C.S. Lewis’s The Great Divorce and the Middle English dream vision Pearl. By exploring the tension between worldly and heavenly conceptions of justice, value, and possession in The Great Divorce and Pearl, this study demonstrates Lewis’s skill at utilizing and updating medieval source material in order to respond to twentieth-century problems

This study elucidates the importance of cooking manuals and recipe collections published by the Sección Femenina de la Falange (Womens Section of the Falange, 1934-1977) during the Franco Dictatorship (1939-1975) in Spain. The organization emphasized its dedication to pursuing women\u27s interests to the political apparatus in its political rhetoric and experienced a substantial amount of autonomy from the Franco regime in communicating feminine ideals and social reform to the Spanish public. Recipes and cooking instruction provided the organization a unique way to access Spanish homes and reform the quotidian habits of Spanish women. The ideology of the Sección Femenina emphasized the importance of revolutionary reform beginning with the individual but desired to have a larger impact through housewives to improve the family and greater society. The Sección Femenina created an ideal for Spanish womanhood yet tried accommodated its femininity for individual variation of class, regional origin, and age. An investigation of cooking publications provides new insight to how the organization worked within the space prescribed by the Franco regime in hopes of reforming Spanish women, the home, and society. This thesis examines how the Sección Femenina used food ideology to communicate Falange ideology to women

Improving student interest with portable laboratory tools in engineering

[EN] The desire for improving student motivation and interest in engineering learning have yielded new methodologies for active learning. The present paper presents a new methodology based on project learning and portable learning technology. The goal of the method was to improve the students’ confidence and learning in industrial design and prototyping during one semester. The results indicate that students’ motivation for learning was very high and it has been maintained during the whole semester. Also, the confidence on their learning and retention ability increased, which indicates that the method had a positive impact on the students.Dunai Dunai, L.; Antonino Daviu, JA.; Lengua Lengua, I.
