Mixed sneutrino dark matter in light of the 2011 XENON and LHC results
In the context of supersymmetric models in which small Dirac neutrino masses
are generated by supersymmetry breaking, a mainly right-handed (RH) mixed
sneutrino can be an excellent cold dark matter (DM) candidate. We perform a
global analysis of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM)+RH neutrino
parameter space by means of Markov Chain Monte Carlo scans. We include all
relevant constraints from collider and dark matter searches, paying particular
attention to nuclear and astrophysical uncertainties. Two distinct cases can
satisfy all constraints: heavy sneutrino DM with mass of order 100 GeV, as well
as light sneutrino DM with mass of about 3-6 GeV. We discuss the implications
for direct and indirect dark matter searches, as well as for SUSY and Higgs
searches at the LHC for both, the light and the heavy sneutrino dark matter
case. The light sneutrino case is excluded by the 125-126 GeV Higgs signal.Comment: 38 pages, 13 figures; v3: appendix added, minor corrections, note

LHC constraints on light neutralino dark matter in the MSSM
Light neutralino dark matter can be achieved in the Minimal Supersymmetric
Standard Model if staus are rather light, with mass around 100 GeV. We perform
a detailed analysis of the relevant supersymmetric parameter space, including
also the possibility of light selectons and smuons, and of light higgsino- or
wino-like charginos. In addition to the latest limits from direct and indirect
detection of dark matter, ATLAS and CMS constraints on electroweak-inos and on
sleptons are taken into account using a "simplified models" framework.
Measurements of the properties of the Higgs boson at 125 GeV, which constrain
amongst others the invisible decay of the Higgs boson into a pair of
neutralinos, are also implemented in the analysis. We show that viable
neutralino dark matter can be achieved for masses as low as 15 GeV. In this
case, light charginos close to the LEP bound are required in addition to light
right-chiral staus. Significant deviations are observed in the couplings of the
125 GeV Higgs boson. These constitute a promising way to probe the light
neutralino dark matter scenario in the next run of the LHC.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures; matches version accepted for publication in

Dilepton constraints in the inert doublet model from Run 1 of the LHC
Searches in final states with two leptons plus missing transverse energy, targeting supersymmetric particles or invisible decays of the Higgs boson, were performed during Run 1 of the LHC. Recasting the results of these analyses in the context of the inert doublet model (IDM) using MADANALYSIS 5, we show that they provide constraints on inert scalars that significantly extend previous limits from LEP. Moreover, these LHC constraints allow us to test the IDM in the limit of very small Higgs-inert scalar coupling, where the constraints from direct detection of dark matter and the invisible Higgs width vanish.141431scopu
Gaseous environments modify physiology in the brewing yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae during batch alcoholic fermentation
International audienceAims: To investigate the impact of different gaseous atmospheres on different physiological parameters in the brewing yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae BRAS291 during batch fermentation. Methods and Results: Yeasts were cultivated on a defined medium with a continuous sparging of hydrogen, helium and oxygen or without gas, permitting to obtain three values of external redox. High differences were observed concerning viable cell number, size and metabolites produced during the cultures. The ethanol yields were diminished whereas glycerol, succinate, acetoin, acetate and acetaldehyde yields were enhanced significantly. Moreover, we observed major changes in the intracellular NADH/NAD+ and GSH/GSSG ratio. Conclusions: The use of gas led to drastic changes in the cell size, primary energy metabolism and internal redox balance and Eh. These changes were different depending on the gas applied throughout the culture. Significance and Impact of the Study: For the first time, our study describes the influence of various gases on the physiology of the brewing yeast S. cerevisiae. These influences concern mainly yeast growth, cell structure, carbon and redox metabolisms. This work may have important implications in alcohol-related industries, where different strategies are currently developed to control better the production of metabolites with a particular attention to glycerol and ethanol
Light modulates oscillatory alpha activity in the occipital cortex of totally visually blind individuals with intact non-image-forming photoreception
The discovery of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) marked a major shift in our understanding of how light information is processed by the mammalian brain. These ipRGCs influence multiple functions not directly related to image formation such as circadian resetting and entrainment, pupil constriction, enhancement of alertness, as well as the modulation of cognition. More recently, it was demonstrated that ipRGCs may also contribute to basic visual functions. The impact of ipRGCs on visual function, independently of image forming photoreceptors, remains difficult to isolate, however, particularly in humans. We previously showed that exposure to intense monochromatic blue light (465 nm) induced non-conscious light perception in a forced choice task in three rare totally visually blind individuals without detectable rod and cone function, but who retained non-image-forming responses to light, very likely via ipRGCs. The neural foundation of such light perception in the absence of conscious vision is unknown, however. In this study, we characterized the brain activity of these three participants using electroencephalography (EEG), and demonstrate that unconsciously perceived light triggers an early and reliable transient desynchronization (i.e. decreased power) of the alpha EEG rhythm (8-14 Hz) over the occipital cortex. These results provide compelling insight into how ipRGC may contribute to transient changes in ongoing brain activity. They suggest that occipital alpha rhythm synchrony, which is typically linked to the visual system, is modulated by ipRGCs photoreception; a process that may contribute to the non-conscious light perception in those blind individuals.status: publishe
