Systems, interactions and macrotheory
A significant proportion of early HCI research was guided by one very clear vision: that the existing theory base in psychology and cognitive science could be developed to yield engineering tools for use in the interdisciplinary context of HCI design. While interface technologies and heuristic methods for behavioral evaluation have rapidly advanced in both capability and breadth of application, progress toward deeper theory has been modest, and some now believe it to be unnecessary. A case is presented for developing new forms of theory, based around generic “systems of interactors.” An overlapping, layered structure of macro- and microtheories could then serve an explanatory role, and could also bind together contributions from the different disciplines. Novel routes to formalizing and applying such theories provide a host of interesting and tractable problems for future basic research in HCI
The subconvexity problem for \GL_{2}
Generalizing and unifying prior results, we solve the subconvexity problem
for the -functions of \GL_{1} and \GL_{2} automorphic representations
over a fixed number field, uniformly in all aspects. A novel feature of the
present method is the softness of our arguments; this is largely due to a
consistent use of canonically normalized period relations, such as those

Generalized Drude model: Unification of ballistic and diffusive electron transport
For electron transport in parallel-plane semiconducting structures, a model
is developed that unifies ballistic and diffusive transport and thus
generalizes the Drude model. The unified model is valid for arbitrary magnitude
of the mean free path and arbitrary shape of the conduction band edge profile.
Universal formulas are obtained for the current-voltage characteristic in the
nondegenerate case and for the zero-bias conductance in the degenerate case,
which describe in a transparent manner the interplay of ballistic and diffusive
transport. The semiclassical approach is adopted, but quantum corrections
allowing for tunneling are included. Examples are considered, in particular the
case of chains of grains in polycrystalline or microcrystalline semiconductors
with grain size comparable to, or smaller than, the mean free path. Substantial
deviations of the results of the unified model from those of the ballistic
thermionic-emission model and of the drift-diffusion model are found. The
formulation of the model is one-dimensional, but it is argued that its results
should not differ substantially from those of a fully three-dimensional

On-shell two-loop three-gluon vertex
The two-loop three-gluon vertex is calculated in an arbitrary covariant
gauge, in the limit when two of the gluons are on the mass shell. The
corresponding two-loop results for the ghost-gluon vertex are also obtained. It
is shown that the results are consistent with the Ward-Slavnov-Taylor

Atomic Force Microscopy of height fluctuations of fibroblast cells
We investigated the nanometer scale height fluctuations of 3T3 fibroblast
cells with the atomic force microscope (AFM) under physiological conditions.
Correlation between these fluctuations and lateral cellular motility can be
observed. Fluctuations measured on leading edges appear to be predominantly
related to actin polymerization-depolymerization processes. We found fast (5
Hz) pulsatory behavior with 1--2 nm amplitude on a cell with low motility
showing emphasized structure of stress fibres. Myosin driven contractions of

Overview of mathematical approaches used to model bacterial chemotaxis I: the single cell
Mathematical modeling of bacterial chemotaxis systems has been influential and insightful in helping to understand experimental observations. We provide here a comprehensive overview of the range of mathematical approaches used for modeling, within a single bacterium, chemotactic processes caused by changes to external gradients in its environment. Specific areas of the bacterial system which have been studied and modeled are discussed in detail, including the modeling of adaptation in response to attractant gradients, the intracellular phosphorylation cascade, membrane receptor clustering, and spatial modeling of intracellular protein signal transduction. The importance of producing robust models that address adaptation, gain, and sensitivity are also discussed. This review highlights that while mathematical modeling has aided in understanding bacterial chemotaxis on the individual cell scale and guiding experimental design, no single model succeeds in robustly describing all of the basic elements of the cell. We conclude by discussing the importance of this and the future of modeling in this area
Theory of the c-Axis Penetration Depth in the Cuprates
Recent measurements of the London penetration depth tensor in the cuprates
find a weak temperature dependence along the c-direction which is seemingly
inconsistent with evidence for d-wave pairing deduced from in-plane
measurements. We demonstrate in this paper that these disparate results are not
in contradiction, but can be explained within a theory based on incoherent
quasiparticle hopping between the CuO2 layers. By relating the calculated
temperature dependence of the penetration depth \lambda_c(T) to the c-axis
resistivity, we show how the measured ratio \lambda_c^2(0) / \lambda_c^2(T) can
provide insight into the behavior of c-axis transport below Tc and the related
