Mathematical vibration modeling for an electrostatic precipitator system
The rapping acceleration of collecting plates in electrostatic precipitator system determines the dust- rapping performance of electromagnetic vibration exciter. To maximize the acceleration, the resonance phenomena needs to be driven by matching the mechanical natural frequency of the electrostatic precipitator system and the input frequency of electric current which energizes the electromagnetic vibrator. In this paper, the dust collecting plates and the electromagnetic vibration exciter in electrostatic precipitator system are vibration-modeled mathematically to characterize the resonance frequency. The effective mass and stiffness for each mode of the collecting plates are calculated using finite elements analysis and the natural frequency are computed by the method of least error square. In addition, the effective mass and stiffness of the exciter are computed. Then, the whole electrostatic precipitator system is analyzed. A frequency response analysis based on a sine sweep signal experiment is performed on a prototype for verification of calculated theoretical resonance frequency
Potential benefit of a screening tool in selecting head-injured children aged 36 months or younger who can cooperate in computed tomography
Purpose We aimed to investigate the benefit of a screening tool in selecting head-injured children who can potentially cooperate with computed tomography (CT). Methods The study population consisted of head-injured children aged 36 months or younger who visited the emergency department (ED) and underwent CT from January 2013 through December 2020. Procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) using per os chloral hydrate or per rectal thiopental was implemented to children presumed less cooperative for CT as per a clinical screening tool for cooperative candidates for CT (e.g., ability to lie still on bed for 10 seconds without a guardian). According to the PSA and the first attempt success of CT, we compared baseline characteristics, CT findings, clinically important traumatic brain injury, ED length of stay (EDLOS), and ED disposition. Results Among the 247 children, PSA was used in 102 (41.3%). The PSA group showed a higher proportion of 3-36 months of age (PSA, 96.1% vs. non-PSA, 82.8%; P = 0.001) and longer median EDLOS (PSA, 127.0 [interquartile range, 101.0-172.0] vs. non-PSA, 85.0 minutes [63.0-130.0]; P < 0.001). The number of children undergoing the first attempt success was 213 (86.2%) without a difference in both groups (PSA, 84.3% vs. non-PSA, 87.6%; P = 0.645). In the 213 children, the implementation of PSA was associated with longer median EDLOS (PSA, 121.0 [99.0-156.0] vs. non-PSA, 77.0 minutes [60.0-122.0]; P < 0.001). In the non-PSA group (n = 145), the first attempt failure was associated with the presence of skull fracture (success, 7.1% vs. failure, 27.8%; P = 0.009). Conclusion This study suggests a potential benefit of the screening tool in selecting cooperative candidates for CT, i.e., those who could forgo PSA using oral chloral hydrate or per rectal thiopental, in young children with head injury

Session D5: Current Status of Fish Passages in South Korea
Abstract:
Weirs are important for countries that agriculture is the primary industry due to the stable supply of water to agricultural fields. Because agriculture is still important in Korean peninsula, weirs have been constructing until now from small streams to large rivers. However, only limited fish passages were installed in weirs, and there were no managements. As a results, streams and rivers have become highly fragmented, with fish migration being severely impeded. Thus, ministry of agriculture, food and rural affairs investigated entire fish passages in Korea in 2010-2011, and estimated current status and problems. A total of 33,718 weirs were installed (until year 2012), and this means that weirs are arithmetically located every 0.81km of the total stream length in Korea. Fish passages, however, were constructed only in 4,496 weirs (13.3% of installation rate). The weir type fish passages with Ice- Harbor type fishways (8.1%) which are favoured nowadays was showed the greatest number (36%), and the vertical slot type passages was in the second place (31%). The denil type and nature-like type were rarely installed. Only 18.1% of installed fish passages were left whole, and urgent repair is needed for 56.7%. Fish passages of 31.3% were incorporated into the recommended slope range of Korea (1:20). Most of problems are related discharge, poor entrance, breakage and sedimentation. With these structural problems, discontinuous installation of fish passages generates poor continuity of streams. Currently, to improve stream connectivity many projects from Korean government are now conducting and preparing, and additionally development of fish passages specialized for Korean fishes are required
Excessive Exercise Habits in Marathoners as Novel Indicators of Masked Hypertension
Background. Excessive exercise such as marathon running increases the risk of cardiovascular events that may be related to myocardial infarction and sudden death. We aimed to investigate that the exercise characteristics can be used as a novel indicator of masked hypertension. Methods. A total of 571 middle-aged recreational male marathoners were assigned to a high blood pressure group (HBPG; = 214) or a normal blood pressure group (NBPG; = 357). A graded exercise test was used to examine the hemodynamic response and cardiac events, and the personal exercise characteristics were recorded. Results. Systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were higher in the HBPG than in the NBPG ( < 0.05, all). The marathon history, exercise intensity, and time were longer and higher, whereas the marathon completion duration was shorter in the HBPG than in NBPG ( < 0.05, all). HBPG showed a higher frequency of alcohol consumption than NBPG ( < 0.05). Conclusion. More excessive exercise characteristics than the normative individuals. If the individuals exhibit high blood pressure during rest as well as exercise, the exercise characteristics could be used as a novel indicator for masked hypertension
Efficacy of early immunomodulator therapy on the outcomes of Crohnâs disease
BACKGROUND: The natural course of Crohnâs disease (CD), with continuing relapses and remissions, leads to irreversible intestinal damage. Early adoption of immunomodulator therapy has been proposed in order to address this; however, it is still uncertain whether early immunomodulator therapy could affect the natural course of the disease in real practice. We evaluated the efficacy of such therapy on the prognosis of newly diagnosed patients with CD. METHODS: This retrospective study included 168 patients who were newly diagnosed with CD and who started treatment at Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea between January 2006 and March 2013. The short- and long-term outcomes were compared between patients treated with early immunomodulator therapy and those treated with conventional therapy. RESULTS: A Kaplan-Meier analysis identified that administration of immunomodulators within 6Â months after diagnosis of CD was superior to conventional therapy in terms of clinical remission and corticosteroid-free remission rates (P=0.043 and P=0.035). However, P=0.827). Patients with a baseline elevated CRP level were more likely to relapse (P<0.005). Drug-related adverse events were more frequent in the early immunomodulator therapy group than in the conventional therapy group P=0.029). CONCLUSIONS: Early immunomodulator therapy was more effective than conventional therapy in inducing remission, but not in preventing relapse. Baseline high CRP level was a significant indicator of relapse
Comparative Microarray Analysis of Intestinal Lymphocytes following Eimeria acervulina, E. maxima, or E. tenella Infection in the Chicken
Relative expression levels of immune- and non-immune-related mRNAs in chicken intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes experimentally infected with Eimeria acervulina, E. maxima, or E. tenella were measured using a 10K cDNA microarray. Based on a cutoff of >2.0-fold differential expression compared with uninfected controls, relatively equal numbers of transcripts were altered by the three Eimeria infections at 1, 2, and 3 days post-primary infection. By contrast, E. tenella elicited the greatest number of altered transcripts at 4, 5, and 6 days post-primary infection, and at all time points following secondary infection. When analyzed on the basis of up- or down-regulated transcript levels over the entire 6 day infection periods, approximately equal numbers of up-regulated transcripts were detected following E. tenella primary (1,469) and secondary (1,459) infections, with a greater number of down-regulated mRNAs following secondary (1,063) vs. primary (890) infection. On the contrary, relatively few mRNA were modulated following primary infection with E. acervulina (35 up, 160 down) or E. maxima (65 up, 148 down) compared with secondary infection (E. acervulina, 1,142 up, 1,289 down; E. maxima, 368 up, 1,349 down). With all three coccidia, biological pathway analysis identified the altered transcripts as belonging to the categories of âDisease and Disorderâ and âPhysiological System Development and Functionâ. Sixteen intracellular signaling pathways were identified from the differentially expressed transcripts following Eimeria infection, with the greatest significance observed following E. acervulina infection. Taken together, this new information will expand our understanding of host-pathogen interactions in avian coccidiosis and contribute to the development of novel disease control strategies
Retrieval of Melt Ponds on Arctic Multiyear Sea Ice in Summer from TerraSAR-X Dual-Polarization Data Using Machine Learning Approaches: A Case Study in the Chukchi Sea with Mid-Incidence Angle Data
Melt ponds, a common feature on Arctic sea ice, absorb most of the incoming solar radiation and have a large effect on the melting rate of sea ice, which significantly influences climate change. Therefore, it is very important to monitor melt ponds in order to better understand the sea ice-climate interaction. In this study, melt pond retrieval models were developed using the TerraSAR-X dual-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with mid-incidence angle obtained in a summer multiyear sea ice area in the Chukchi Sea, the Western Arctic, based on two rule-based machine learning approachesdecision trees (DT) and random forest (RF)in order to derive melt pond statistics at high spatial resolution and to identify key polarimetric parameters for melt pond detection. Melt ponds, sea ice and open water were delineated from the airborne SAR images (0.3-m resolution), which were used as a reference dataset. A total of eight polarimetric parameters (HH and VV backscattering coefficients, co-polarization ratio, co-polarization phase difference, co-polarization correlation coefficient, alpha angle, entropy and anisotropy) were derived from the TerraSAR-X dual-polarization data and then used as input variables for the machine learning models. The DT and RF models could not effectively discriminate melt ponds from open water when using only the polarimetric parameters. This is because melt ponds showed similar polarimetric signatures to open water. The average and standard deviation of the polarimetric parameters based on a 15 x 15 pixel window were supplemented to the input variables in order to consider the difference between the spatial texture of melt ponds and open water. Both the DT and RF models using the polarimetric parameters and their texture features produced improved performance for the retrieval of melt ponds, and RF was superior to DT. The HH backscattering coefficient was identified as the variable contributing the most, and its spatial standard deviation was the next most contributing one to the classification of open water, sea ice and melt ponds in the RF model. The average of the co-polarization phase difference and the alpha angle in a mid-incidence angle were also identified as the important variables in the RF model. The melt pond fraction and sea ice concentration retrieved from the RF-derived melt pond map showed root mean square deviations of 2.4% and 4.9%, respectively, compared to those from the reference melt pond maps. This indicates that there is potential to accurately monitor melt ponds on multiyear sea ice in the summer season at a local scale using high-resolution dual-polarization SAR data.open
