    THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN TRUNK ENERGY FLOW AND PEAK SHOULDER DISTRACTION FORCE IN COLLEGIATE SOFTBALL PITCHING

    The purpose of the study was to determine the association between trunk energy flow (proximal energy inflow (IF) and distal energy outflow (OF) on the pitching arm side) and peak shoulder distraction force during the acceleration phase of the windmill softball pitch. Fifty-five collegiate softball pitchers participated. Regression analysis revealed proximal energy IF was not associated with peak shoulder distraction force during the acceleration phase of the pitch [F (1,53) = .026; p = .87), r = .02]. Distal trunk OF was also not associated with peak shoulder distraction force during the acceleration phase of the pitch [F (1,53) = .920; p = .342), r = .13]. Thus, it was concluded proximal trunk energy IF and distal trunk energy OF on the pitching arm side are not associated with peak shoulder distraction force during the acceleration phase of the pitch

    DEFICIENCIES IN PITCHING BIOMECHANICS IN BASEBALL PITCHERS WITH A HISTORY OF SLAP REPAIR

    Baseball pitchers who undergo SLAP (superior labrum, anterior to posterior) repair often have trouble returning to their previous level of performance. While the reason is often assumed to be diminished shoulder range of motion or other mechanical changes, differences in pitching biomechanics following surgery have not been previously studied. Pitching biomechanics were compared retrospectively between collegiate and professional pitchers with a history of a SLAP repair (n=10) and a control group (n=40) with no history of surgery. Full body biomechanics were compared between the two groups. For each comparison, a Student’s t-test was used at an a level of 0.05. Pitchers with history of SLAP repair produce less shoulder external rotation, shoulder horizontal abduction, and trunk forward tilt during pitching than pitchers with no history of injury

    PITCHING MECHANICS AND PAIN HISTORY IN COLLEGIATE SOFTBALL PITCHERS

    The purpose of this study was to compare collegiate softball pitchers’ mechanics with and without upper extremity pain. Fifty-five collegiate softball pitchers volunteered to participate. Based on a pain history questionnaire, participants were divided into two groups: upper extremity pain, and pain free. Kinematic data were collected on the change-up softball pitch using an electromagnetic tracking system. The group exhibiting upper extremity pain illustrated greater shoulder horizontal abduction at foot contact, and less trunk lateral flexion towards the throwing side at ball release compared to the pain free group. In combination, the authors speculate these injury-prone positions and forces about the shoulder could be the result of improper energy transfer along the kinetic chain

    Coincident light and clock regulation of pseudoresponse regulator protein 37 (PRR37) controls photoperiodic flowering in sorghum

    Optimal flowering time is critical to the success of modern agriculture. Sorghum is a short-day tropical species that exhibits substantial photoperiod sensitivity and delayed flowering in long days. Genotypes with reduced photoperiod sensitivity enabled sorghum's utilization as a grain crop in temperate zones worldwide. In the present study, Ma(1), the major repressor of sorghum flowering in long days, was identified as the pseudoresponse regulator protein 37 (PRR37) through positional cloning and analysis of SbPRR37 alleles that modulate flowering time in grain and energy sorghum. Several allelic variants of SbPRR37 were identified in early flowering grain sorghum germplasm that contain unique loss-of-function mutations. We show that in long days SbPRR37 activates expression of the floral inhibitor CONSTANS and represses expression of the floral activators Early Heading Date 1, FLOWERING LOCUS T, Zea mays CENTRORADIALIS 8, and floral induction. Expression of SbPRR37 is light dependent and regulated by the circadian clock, with peaks of RNA abundance in the morning and evening in long days. In short days, the evening-phase expression of SbPRR37 does not occur due to darkness, allowing sorghum to flower in this photoperiod. This study provides insight into an external coincidence mechanism of photoperiodic regulation of flowering time mediated by PRR37 in the short-day grass sorghum and identifies important alleles of SbPRR37 that are critical for the utilization of this tropical grass in temperate zone grain and bioenergy production

    GROWTH on GW190425: Searching thousands of square degrees to identify an optical or infrared counterpart to a binary neutron star merger with the Zwicky Transient Facility and Palomar Gattini IR

    The beginning of the third observing run by the network of gravitational-wave detectors has brought the discovery of many compact binary coalescences. Prompted by the detection of the first binary neutron star merger in this run (GW190425 / LIGO/Virgo S190425z), we performed a dedicated follow-up campaign with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Palomar Gattini-IR telescopes. As it was a single gravitational-wave detector discovery, the initial skymap spanned most of the sky observable from Palomar Observatory, the site of both instruments. Covering 8000 deg2^2 of the inner 99\% of the initial skymap over the next two nights, corresponding to an integrated probability of 46\%, the ZTF system achieved a depth of ≈\approx\,21 mABm_\textrm{AB} in gg- and rr-bands. Palomar Gattini-IR covered a total of 2200 square degrees in JJ-band to a depth of 15.5\,mag, including 32\% of the integrated probability based on the initial sky map. However, the revised skymap issued the following day reduced these numbers to 21\% for the Zwicky Transient Facility and 19\% for Palomar Gattini-IR. Out of the 338,646 ZTF transient "alerts" over the first two nights of observations, we narrowed this list to 15 candidate counterparts. Two candidates, ZTF19aarykkb and ZTF19aarzaod were particularly compelling given that their location, distance, and age were consistent with the gravitational-wave event, and their early optical lightcurves were photometrically consistent with that of kilonovae. These two candidates were spectroscopically classified as young core-collapse supernovae. The remaining candidates were photometrically or spectroscopically ruled-out as supernovae. Palomar Gattini-IR identified one fast evolving infrared transient after the merger, PGIR19bn, which was later spectroscopically classified as an M-dwarf flare. [abridged

    Cytokine Profiles of Severe Influenza Virus-Related Complications in Children

    RationaleEffective immunomodulatory therapies for children with life-threatening “cytokine storm” triggered by acute influenza infection are lacking. Understanding the immune profiles of children progressing to severe lung injury and/or septic shock could provide insight into pathogenesis.ObjectivesTo compare the endotracheal and serum cytokine profiles of children with influenza-related critical illness and to identify their associations with severe influenza-associated complications.MethodsChildren with influenza-related critical illness were enrolled across 32 hospitals in development (N = 171) and validation (N = 73) cohorts (December 2008 through May 2016). Concentrations of 42 cytokines were measured in serum and endotracheal samples and clustered into modules of covarying cytokines. Relative concentrations of cytokines and cytokine modules were tested for associations with acute lung injury (ALI), shock requiring vasopressors, and death/ECMO.Measurements and main resultsModules of covarying cytokines were more significantly associated with disease severity than individual cytokines. In the development cohort, increased levels of a serum module containing IL6, IL8, IL10, IP10, GCSF, MCP1, and MIP1α [shock odds ratio (OR) = 3.37, family-wise error rate (FWER) p < 10−4], and decreased levels of a module containing EGF, FGF2, SCD40L, and PAI-1 (shock OR = 0.43, FWER p = 0.002), were both associated with ALI, shock, and death-ECMO independent of age and bacterial coinfection. Both of these associations were confirmed in the validation cohort. Endotracheal and serum cytokine associations differed markedly and were differentially associated with clinical outcomes.ConclusionWe identified strong positive and negative associations of cytokine modules with the most severe influenza-related complications in children, providing new insights into the pathogenesis of influenza-related critical illness in children. Effective therapies may need to target mediators of both inflammation and repair

    Performance of the PEdiatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction-2 score in critically ill children requiring plasma transfusions

    BackgroundOrgan dysfunction scores, based on physiological parameters, have been created to describe organ failure. In a general pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) population, the PEdiatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction-2 score (PELOD-2) score had both a good discrimination and calibration, allowing to describe the clinical outcome of critically ill children throughout their stay. This score is increasingly used in clinical trials in specific subpopulation. Our objective was to assess the performance of the PELOD-2 score in a subpopulation of critically ill children requiring plasma transfusions.MethodsThis was an ancillary study of a prospective observational study on plasma transfusions over a 6-week period, in 101 PICUs in 21 countries. All critically ill children who received at least one plasma transfusion during the observation period were included. PELOD-2 scores were measured on days 1, 2, 5, 8, and 12 after plasma transfusion. Performance of the score was assessed by the determination of the discrimination (area under the ROC curve: AUC) and the calibration (Hosmer–Lemeshow test).ResultsFour hundred and forty-three patients were enrolled in the study (median age and weight: 1 year and 9.1 kg, respectively). Observed mortality rate was 26.9 % (119/443). For PELOD-2 on day 1, the AUC was 0.76 (95 % CI 0.71–0.81) and the Hosmer–Lemeshow test was p = 0.76. The serial evaluation of the changes in the daily PELOD-2 scores from day 1 demonstrated a significant association with death, adjusted for the PELOD-2 score on day 1.ConclusionsIn a subpopulation of critically ill children requiring plasma transfusion, the PELOD-2 score has a lower but acceptable discrimination than in an entire population. This score should therefore be used cautiously in this specific subpopulation.</p
