Improving the Functional Control of Aged Ferroelectrics using Insights from Atomistic Modelling
We provide a fundamental insight into the microscopic mechanisms of the
ageing processes. Using large scale molecular dynamics simulations of the
prototypical ferroelectric material PbTiO3, we demonstrate that the
experimentally observed ageing phenomena can be reproduced from intrinsic
interactions of defect-dipoles related to dopant-vacancy associates, even in
the absence of extrinsic effects. We show that variation of the dopant
concentration modifies the material's hysteretic response. We identify a
universal method to reduce loss and tune the electromechanical properties of
inexpensive ceramics for efficient technologies.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Effects of physical activity on debilitating behaviours in 13- to 20-year-old males with severe autism spectrum disorder
The presented study investigated the extent to which engaging in a therapeutic sporting programme in males with severe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) improves the debilitating behaviours commonly associated with ASD. Furthermore, the views of parents of the autistic participants were assessed concerning the effectiveness of the programme. Participants were eight 13-20 year old males born in the UK from a school and sports college for pupils with severe learning difficulties. The selection was using volunteer sampling from the âMonday Clubâ initiative, run by Saracens Sports Foundation in partnership with a local School and specialist Sports College. The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale (GARS-3) was administered to identify and measure the severity of ASD behaviours at four time periods namely: at programme entry as the baseline (T1), a second time after 8 weeks (T2), a third time after sixteen weeks (T3) and a fourth time post programme (T4). The results showed that for the more severe cases of ASD (Autism Index >101) there was no positive change in subscale performance from Time1 to Time2. For milder cases (Autism Index 71-100) there were subtle non-significant improvements on the subscale scores from Time1 to Time2. Of the 6 subscales at Time2, Emotional Responses (ER), Cognitive Style (CS) and Maladaptive Speech (MS) approached significance at the p = 0.05 level. At Time3 and Time4, there was also no statistically significant improvement in ASD behaviours compared to the baseline for either condition. Finally parentsâ were âvery satisfiedâ with their childâs participation in the physical activity programme
A cross-continental study on children's drawings of football players: implications for understanding key issues and controversies in human figure drawings
Professionals examine various aspects of girlsâ and boysâ drawings as a way of understanding their intelligence, personality and emotional state. However, the extent to which such measures could be universally generalised or attributed to a specific cultural norm is still a debatable issue. In the present study five key features of childrenâs drawings namely: the size (height) of the drawings, profile or full face, figure in action or static, shaded or non-shaded and the nature of additional details were examined from a cross-cultural perspective, and by providing a topic (football) for which childrenâs drawing of a human figure could provide opportunities for the latter indices to manifest and flourish. Children from three countries; England, Iran and Brazil, representing three continents took part in this study. The participants were asked to draw a football player from their own country and from the other participating countries. The results showed that Brazilian children differ from Iranian and English children by drawing significantly smaller figures and putting more football action in the drawings. Shading of the figure drawn was more prevalent amongst English children. Such findings have implications for the interpretation of key aspects of children's drawings in educational, clinical and therapeutic settings and from a universal vs. culturally-specific viewpoint
Early out-of-equilibrium beam-plasma evolution
We solve analytically the out-of-equilibrium initial stage that follows the
injection of a radially finite electron beam into a plasma at rest and test it
against particle-in-cell simulations. For initial large beam edge gradients and
not too large beam radius, compared to the electron skin depth, the electron
beam is shown to evolve into a ring structure. For low enough transverse
temperatures, the filamentation instability eventually proceeds and saturates
when transverse isotropy is reached. The analysis accounts for the variety of
very recent experimental beam transverse observations.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. Letter
Paper Session III-A - Next Generation Reusable Launch Systems Site Selection Trade Study: An Application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process
This paper focuses on site selection trade studies associated with Next Generation Reusable Launch Vehicle concepts. During site selection trade studies the need to utilize a decision making tool enabling tradeoffs between competing objectives while minimizing intuitive bias was recognized. In order to meet established goals of the next generation reusable launch vehicle concepts, a comprehensive site selection trade study must be performed. Estimates for both non-recurring and recurring costs associated with each candidate site must be evaluated. The systemsâ operations concept, environmental constraints, logistics, range support, and weather are other important factors which must also be considered. Based on this, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was implemented, allowing for systematic evaluation and measurement of each of the identified criteria in the site selection process. AHP is a multi-criterion decision support methodology allowing study participants (engineers and program management) to deal consistently with comparisons between both tangible and intangible criteria. Using this tool, participants in the site selection process can integrate their collective judgment, experience and understanding concerning the relevant importance of identified criteria as they relate to one another. The resulting process is organized in a logical hierarchical structure which can be easily tested for sensitivities to changes in assumptions and judgments
Development and testing of the Active Temperature, Ozone and Moisture Microwave Spectrometer (ATOMMS) cm and mm wavelength occultation instrument
We present initial results from testing a new remote sensing system called the Active Temperature, Ozone and Moisture Microwave Spectrometer (ATOMMS). ATOMMS is designed as a satellite-to-satellite occultation system for monitoring climate. We are developing the prototype instrument for an aircraft to aircraft occultation demonstration. Here we focus on field testing of the ATOMMS instrument, in particular the remote sensing of water by measuring the attenuation caused by the 22 GHz and 183 GHz water absorption lines.
Our measurements of the 183 GHz line spectrum along an 820 m path revealed that the AM 6.2 spectroscopic model provdes a much better match to the observed spectrum than the MPM93 model. These comparisons also indicate that errors in the ATOMMS amplitude measurements are about 0.3%. Pressure sensitivity bodes well for ATOMMS as a climate instrument. Comparisons with a hygrometer revealed consistency at the 0.05 mb level, which is about 1% of the absolute humidity.
Initial measurements of absorption by the 22 GHz line made along a 5.4 km path between two mountaintops captured a large increase in water vapor similar to that measured by several nearby hygrometers. A storm passage between the two instruments yielded our first measurements of extinction by rain and cloud droplets. Comparisons of ATOMMS 1.5 mm opacity measurements with measured visible opacity and backscatter from a weather radar revealed features simultaneously evident in all three datasets confirming the ATOMMS measurements. The combined ATOMMS, radar and visible information revealed the evolution of rain and cloud amounts along the signal path during the passage of the storm. The derived average cloud water content reached typical continental cloud amounts. These results demonstrated a significant portion of the information content of ATOMMS and its ability to penetrate through clouds and rain which is critical to its all-weather, climate monitoring capability
A current driven instability in parallel, relativistic shocks
Recently, Bell has reanalysed the problem of wave excitation by cosmic rays
propagating in the pre-cursor region of a supernova remnant shock front. He
pointed out a strong, non-resonant, current-driven instability that had been
overlooked in the kinetic treatments, and suggested that it is responsible for
substantial amplification of the ambient magnetic field. Magnetic field
amplification is also an important issue in the problem of the formation and
structure of relativistic shock fronts, particularly in relation to models of
gamma-ray bursts. We have therefore generalised the linear analysis to apply to
this case, assuming a relativistic background plasma and a monoenergetic,
unidirectional incoming proton beam. We find essentially the same non-resonant
instability noticed by Bell, and show that also under GRB conditions, it grows
much faster than the resonant waves. We quantify the extent to which thermal
effects in the background plasma limit the maximum growth rate.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
Detection of the fire blight biocontrol agent Bacillus subtilis BD170 (BioproÂŽ) in a Swiss apple orchard
Fire blight, caused by Erwinia amylovora, is a major disease threat to apple, pear and other pome fruit worldwide. The disease is widespread in Europe and has recently become established in Switzerland. Antibiotics are the most effective controls used in North America but these are not permitted for agricultural use in most European countries. A newly registered biological control product BioproÂŽ, based on the antagonist Bacillus subtilis strain BD170, is being used as an alternative strategy for fire blight management. A specific molecular marker was developed for monitoring the spread of this agent on blossoms after BioproÂŽ spray application in a Swiss apple orchard throughout the bloom period for 2years. Direct spraying resulted in efficient primary colonisation of pistils in flowers that were open at the time of treatment. Subsequent bacterial dissemination (secondary colonisation) of flowers that were closed or at bud stage at the time of treatment was observed but was found to be dependent on the timing of treatments relative to bloom stage in the orchard. Foraging honeybees were shown to be disseminators of BioproÂŽ. We also report detection of the biocontrol agent in honey collected from hives where bees were exposed by placing BioproÂŽ at the entrance or in the hatching nest and from hives that were simply placed in sprayed orchard
