Interaction of microplastics with metal(oid)s in aquatic environments: What is done so far?
Microplastics (MPs) are being recognized as an emergent route of contaminants to aquatic environments, which initially attracted the research interest on their interactions with organic pollutants. Lately, a turning point of attention is evident, with more published studies reporting the presence of metal(oid)s in plastics. This review assembles the mechanisms occurring on microplastics surfaces that enhance sorption of hazardous elements (i.e., metals and metalloids) over environmental exposure. Reported findings of experimental studies are of major importance to understand the factors controlling the sorption/desorption of metal(oid)s to/from microplastics as much as determination of metal(oid)s in environmental plastics. Existence or formation of oxygen-containing functional groups and complexes from surface coatings strongly allow bond of metal(oid)s on reactive surfaces while sorption dynamics are strongly controlled by water chemistry parameters. Moreover, the present work evidences the potential impacts caused by metal(oid)s-MPs interactions to aquatic organisms, prioritizing the need of environmental realistic parameters to test. Bioaccumulation of metal(oid)s desorbed from ingested MPs prove the significant influence of these plastic particles in the bioavailability of pollutants to aquatic biota. In this way, this is a comprehensive manuscript committed to the estimation of the potential ecological risk of MPs to aquatic environments due to their association with metal(oid)s.Versión del edito

Animal manures applied to soil: phosphorus bioavailability, losses to water and erosion
Comunicação oral da qual só está disponível o resumo.Phosphorus (P) is a non renewable resource which highlights the
significance of developing and using alternative sources of P for a sustainable
agriculture. Animal manure is an option but its application to soils to meet crop
nitrogen needs requires careful management practices to minimize freshwater
eutrophication. The aim of this work was to evaluate the partitioning of applied P
between plant uptake, losses to water, and erosion losses when using different
animal manures and a mineral P fertilizer. A field trial was conducted at an erosion
experimental station. The treatments were: Control (0 kg P/ha); cattle manure; solid
fraction of pig and duck slurry and superphosphate, each applied at a rate of 50 kg
P/ha after Lolium sp was sown. Soil samples from each trial were collected over the
9-month study and the water extractable soil P determined. It was found that
desorption of P from all additions rapidly increased soon after P application (2
weeks). After that water extractable soil P remained fairly constant. While duck
slurry desorbed the largest concentration of P, all sources have the potential to
desorb P that could accelerate eutrophication. Plant uptake of P was greater with
cattle manure added and released the least amount of P to water compared with the
other sources of P. The partitioning of applied P between plant uptake and losses to
runoff and sediments ranged between 5-12 % with the higher values in Duck
treatment. Animal manures significantly increased soil Olsen-P, plant production and P
uptake relative to mineral fertilizer. Animal manures can be considered as a source of
available P nevertheless to avoid eutrophication risks increase plant P use efficiency is also
important
Whole-system metabolism and CO2 fluxes in a Mediterranean Bay dominated by seagrass beds (Palma Bay, NW Mediterranean)
The relationship between whole-system metabolism estimates based on planktonic and benthic incubations (bare sediments and seagrass, Posidonia oceanica meadows), and CO2 fluxes across the air-sea interface were examined in the Bay of Palma (Mallorca, Spain) during two cruises in March and June 2002. Moreover, planktonic and benthic incubations were performed at monthly intervals from March 2001 to October 2002 in a seagrass vegetated area of the bay. From the annual study, results showed a contrast between the planktonic compartment, which was heterotrophic during most of the year, except for occasional bloom episodes, and the benthic compartment, which was slightly autotrophic. Whereas the seagrass community was autotrophic, the excess organic carbon production therein could only balance the excess respiration of the planktonic compartment in shallow waters (<10 m) relative to the maximum depth of the bay (55 m). This generated a horizontal gradient from autotrophic or balanced communities in the shallow, seagrass-covered areas of the bay, to strongly heterotrophic communities in deeper areas, consistent with the patterns of CO2 fields and fluxes across the bay observed during the two extensive cruises in 2002. Finally, dissolved inorganic carbon and oxygen budgets provided NEP estimates in fair agreement with those derived from direct metabolic estimates based on incubated samples over the Posidonia oceanica meadow
Artificial neural network analysis of factors controling ecosystem metabolism in coastal systems
Knowing the metabolic balance of an ecosystem is of utmost importance in determining whether the system is a net source or net sink of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. However, obtaining these estimates often demands significant amounts of time and manpower. Here we present a simplified way to obtain an estimation of ecosystem metabolism. We used artificial neural networks (ANNs) to develop a mathematical model of the gross primary production to community respiration ratio (GPP:CR) based on input variables derived from three widely contrasting European coastal ecosystems (Scheldt Estuary, Randers Fjord, and Bay of Palma). Although very large gradients of nutrient concentration, light penetration, and organic-matter concentration exist across the sites, the factors that best predict the GPP:CR ratio are sampling depth, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, and temperature. We propose that, at least in coastal ecosystems, metabolic balance can be predicted relatively easily from these three predictive factors. An important conclusion of this work is that ANNs can provide a robust tool for the determination of ecosystem metabolism in coastal ecosystems
