    Systematic Revision of the Kalliapseudidae (Crustacea: Peracarida: Tanaidacea) and the Population Genetic Structure and Phylogeography of a Species Along the Southeastern and Gulf Coasts of North America

    The Kalliapseudidae is a family of shallow burrow-dwelling marine and estuarine tanaidaceans. There are currently 39 known species of 12 genera and three subfamilies. They are primarily circumtropical in distribution; however, several species are found in temperate waters. The phylogeny of Kalliapseudidae is assessed to test the monophyly of currently accepted subfamilies and genera, based largely on examination of material loaned from various museums and institutions. Multiple exemplars from other apseudomorph families were also included in the ingroup to test the monophyly of the family. Parsimony analyses included 41 terminal taxa and 64 binary and multistate morphological characters. Analyses based on successive weighting resulted in 20 most parsimonious trees (CI = 0.675, RI = 0.917). The strict consensus tree of these most parsimonious trees supported Kalliapseudidae, Kalliapseudinae, Tanapseudes, Cristapseudes, and Mesokalliapseudes as monophyletic. The genus Kalliapseudes could not be resolved, but constraining it to be monophyletic resulted in a significantly worse tree (P = 0.03). The subfamilies Hemikalliapseudinae and Tanapseudinae were recovered as polyphyletic and paraphyletic, respectively, but without support. Constraining them to be monophyletic did not result in a significantly worse tree (P = 0.20). Results indicated high levels of homoplasy in three morphological characteristics traditionally used to differentiate groups. Alokalliapseudes macsweenyi is transferred back to the genus Mesokalliapseudes, rendering Alokalliapseudes a junior subjective synonym. Fourteen new taxa, including eight species of Kalliapseudes and one each of the genera Cristapseudes, Mesokalliapseudes, Transkalliapseudes, and a new genus, were discovered and described. The kalliapseudid tanaid Mesokalliapseudes macsweenyi is an important component of coastal regions of eastern United States, ranging from South Carolina to Mississippi. The DNA sequence variation at the mtDNA COI locus was examined in eight populations to assess the population genetic and phylogeographic structure. Results showed significant genetic structure among the populations and between the Atlantic/Gulf regions. All demographic analyses inferred a population expansion in the Gulf of Mexico, which might be in accordance with a post-Pleistocene range expansion. However, the significant population structure exhibited by the northern Gulf of Mexico populations is a pattern consistent with some degree of isolation and the possible persistence of northern refugia.     Observations on the Kalliapseudid Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Malacostraca: Peracarida) from the Northwestern Atlantic, with an Illustrated Key to the Species

    New information for the kalliapseudid Tanaidacea occurring in the northwestern Atlantic is presented and discussed, including data on range extensions and new depth ranges for 4 species. The taxa studied came from the shelf and coastal waters of the southeastern United States, Puerto Rico and Trinidad. The occurrence of Mesokalliapseudes bahamensis Sieg is extended from the Bahamas and Belize to the coastal waters of East and Gulf coasts (South Carolina to West Florida). The range of Psammokalliapseudes granulosus Brum is expanded northward into the eastern Gulf of Mexico and new locality records for this species are established for Tobago and Puerto Rico. Mesokalliapseudes brasiliensis (Băcescu), previously known from the southwestern Atlantic off Brazil, is reported from the coastal waters off Trinidad. The range of Tanapseudes gutui Hansknecht, Heard, and Bamber is expanded northward into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. New depth ranges are established for Alokalliapseudes macsweenyi (Drumm) (82 m), M. bahamensis (52 m), P. granulosus (53 m), and T. gutui (82 m). An offshore form of A. macsweenyi occurs at depths ranging from 10-82 m on the inner and mid continental shelf off the west coast of Florida (Gulf of Mexico); it differs from the coastal form by the shape and dentition of the male and female chelipeds.     A new species of the genus Monokalliapseudes (Crustacea: Tanaidacea: Kalliapseudidae) from French Guiana

    International audienceA new species, Monokalliapseudes guianae, is described from French Guianese estuaries. It is distinguishable from its only congener most notably by lacking an exopodite on pereopod 1 and by the nature of the basal article of the uropod. The inner distal corner of the basal article is only slightly produced and lacks a rounded lobe. The bases of pereopods 2 and 3 lack numerous long setae. Sexual dimorphism is observed in the antennule, cheliped, and pereopod 1. Depending on size, males can exhibit two forms of chelae. A new diagnosis is presented for the genus Monokalliapseudes

    This report describes the theoretical background on modeling electron transport in the presence of electric and magnetic fields by incorporating the effects of the Lorentz force on electron motion into the Boltzmann transport equation. Electromagnetic fields alter the electron energy and trajectory continuously, and these effects can be characterized mathematically by differential operators in terms of electron energy and direction.     A systematic review and analysis of long-term growth trials on the effect of diet on omega-3 fatty acid levels in the fillet tissue of post-smolt Atlantic salmon

    Elucidating the specific effects of diet on the fatty acid composition in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), particularly health beneficial omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC PUFA), remains an area of intense commercial interest given the increasing market restrictions placed on the supply of fishmeal and fish oil. The present study conducted a systematic review and subsequent analysis of published nutritional data from long-term growth trials using post-smolt Atlantic salmon to provide a summary of currently available information and to identify the most significant drivers of omega-3 levels in Atlantic salmon fillet tissue. Overall, there were relatively few studies which met the selection criteria and this had implications for further explanation of some results. Statistically significant regression models were generated for fillet DHA and fillet n-3 LC PUFA. Fish weight was a significant predictor in both models, and dietary 22:6n-3 (DHA) was an intuitive predictor of fillet DHA. Furthermore, dietary EPA and dietary 22:1 isomers were significant predictors of fillet n-3 LC PUFA
