    Untangling the X-ray Emission From the Sa Galaxy NGC1291 With Chandra

    We present a Chandra ACIS-S observation of the nearby bulge-dominated Sa galaxy NGC1291. The X-ray emission from the bulge resembles the X-ray emission from a sub-class of elliptical and S0 galaxies with low L_X/L_B luminosity ratios. The X-ray emission is composed of a central point-like nucleus, ~50 point sources that are most likely low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), and diffuse gas detectable out to a radius of 120" (5.2 kpc). The diffuse gas has a global temperature of 0.32^{+0.04}_{-0.03} keV and metallicity of 0.06 +/- 0.02 solar, and both quantities marginally decrease with increasing radius. The hot gas fills the hole in the HI distribution, and the softening of the spectrum of the X-ray gas with radius might indicate a thermal coupling of the hot and cold phases of the interstellar medium as previously suggested. The integrated X-ray luminosity of the LMXBs, once normalized by the optical luminosity, is a factor of 1.4 less than in the elliptical galaxy NGC4697 or S0 galaxy NGC1553. The difference in L_{X,stellar}/L_B between the galaxies appears to be because of a lack of very bright sources in NGC1291. No sources above 3 x 10^38 ergs/s were found in NGC1291 when ~7 were expected from scaling from NGC4697 and NGC1553. The cumulative L_{X,stellar}/L_B value including only sources below 1.0 x 10^38 ergs/s is remarkably similar between NGC1291 and NGC4697, if a recent surface brightness fluctuation-determined distance is assumed for NGC4697. If this is a common feature of the LMXB population in early-type systems, it might be used as a distance indicator. Finally, a bright, variable (1.6-3.1 x 10^39 ergs/s) source was detected at the optical center of the galaxy.     The Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture for W-algebras

    The main result in this paper is the character formula for arbitrary irreducible highest weight modules of W algebras. The key ingredient is the functor provided by quantum Hamiltonian reduction, that constructs the W algebras from affine Kac-Moody algebras and in a similar fashion W modules from KM modules. Assuming certain properties of this functor, the W characters are subsequently derived from the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture for KM algebras. The result can be formulated in terms of a double coset of the Weyl group of the KM algebra: the Hasse diagrams give the embedding diagrams of the Verma modules and the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials give the multiplicities in the characters.Comment: uuencoded file, 29 pages latex, 5 figure

    Generation of spin currents via Raman scattering

    We show theoretically that stimulated spin flip Raman scattering can be used to inject spin currents in doped semiconductors with spin split bands. A pure spin current, where oppositely oriented spins move in opposite directions, can be injected in zincblende crystals and structures. The calculated spin current should be detectable by pump-probe optical spectroscopy and anomalous Hall effect measurement

    NGC 4569: recent evidence for a past ram pressure stripping event

    Deep 21-cm HI line observations of the Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC 4569 have been obtained with the VLA in its D configuration and with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. A low surface density arm was discovered in the west of the galaxy, whose velocity field is distinct from that of the overall disk rotation. The observed gas distribution, velocity field, and velocity dispersion are compared to snapshots of dynamical simulations that include the effects of ram pressure. Two different scenarios were explored: (i) ongoing stripping and (ii) a major stripping event that took place about 300 Myr ago. It is concluded that only the post-stripping scenario can reproduce the main observed characteristics of NGC 4569. It is not possible to determine if the gas disk of NGC 4569 had already been truncated before it underwent the ram pressure event that lead to its observed HI deficiency.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures.     Study of the structure and kinematics of the NGC 7465/64/63 triplet galaxies

    This paper is devoted to the analysis of new observational data for the group of galaxies NGC 7465/64/63, which were obtained at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) with the multimode instrument SCORPIO and the Multi Pupil Fiber Spectrograph. For one of group members (NGC 7465) the presence of a polar ring was suspected. Large-scale brightness distributions, velocity and velocity dispersion fields of the ionized gas for all three galaxies as well as line-of-sight velocity curves on the basis of emission and absorption lines and a stellar velocity field in the central region for NGC 7465 were constructed. As a result of the analysis of the obtained information, we revealed an inner stellar disk (r ~ 0.5 kpc) and a warped gaseous disk in addition to the main stellar disk, in NGC 7465. On the basis of the joint study of photometric and spectral data it was ascertained that NGC 7464 is the irregular galaxy of the IrrI type, whose structural and kinematic peculiarities resulted most likely from the gravitational interaction with NGC 7465. The velocity field of the ionized gas of NGC 7463 turned out typical for spiral galaxies with a bar, and the bending of outer parts of its disk could arise owing to the close encounter with one of galaxies of the environment.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure

    HI deficiency in the galaxy cluster ACO 3627. ATCA observations in the Great Attractor region

    ATCA 21 cm HI observations of the rich galaxy cluster ACO 3627 in the Great Attractor region are presented. Three fields of 30' diameter located within one Abell radius of ACO 3627 were observed with a resolution of 15'' and an rms noise of \sim 1 mJy/beam. Only two galaxies were detected in these fields. We compare their HI distribution to new optical R-band images and discuss their velocity fields. The first galaxy is a gas-rich unperturbed spiral whereas the second shows a peculiar HI distribution. The estimated 3-sigma HI mass limit of our observations is \sim 7 x 10^8 M_{\odot} for a line width of 150 km s^{-1}. The non-detection of a considerable number of luminous spiral galaxies indicates that the spiral galaxies are HI deficient. The low detection rate is comparable to the HI deficient Coma cluster (Bravo-Alfaro et al. 2000). ACO 3627 is a bright X-ray cluster. We therefore suspect that ram pressure stripping is responsible for the HI deficiency of the bright cluster spirals.Comment: 9 pages with 7 figures; A&A, in pres

    Dust Streamers in the Virgo Galaxy M86 from Ram Pressure Stripping of its Companion VCC 882

    The giant elliptical galaxy M86 in Virgo has a ~28 kpc long dust trail inside its optical halo that points toward the nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy, VCC 882. The trail seems to be stripped material from the dwarf. Extinction measurements suggest that the ratio of the total gas mass in the trail to the blue luminosity of the dwarf is about unity, which is comparable to such ratios in dwarf irregular galaxies. The ram pressure experienced by the dwarf galaxy in the hot gaseous halo of M86 was comparable to the internal gravitational binding energy density of the presumed former gas disk in VCC 882. Published numerical models of this case are consistent with the overall trail-like morphology observed here. Three concentrations in the trail may be evidence for the predicted periodicity of the mass loss. The evaporation time of the trail is comparable to the trail age obtained from the relative speed of the galaxies and the trail length. Thus the trail could be continuously formed from stripped replenished gas if the VCC 882 orbit is bound. However, the high gas mass and the low expected replenishment rate suggest that this is only the first stripping event.     GALEX observations of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies: UV color and star formation efficiency

    We present GALEX UV observations of a sample of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies for which HI data are available, allowing us to estimate their star formation efficiency. We find that the UV light extends to larger radii than the optical light (some galaxies, but not all, look similar to the recently discovered XUV-disk galaxies). Using a standard calibration to convert the UV light into star formation rates, we obtain lower star formation efficiencies in LSB galaxies than in high surface brightness galaxies by about one order of magnitude. We show however that standard calibrations may not apply to these galaxies, as the FUV-NUV color obtained from the two GALEX bands (FUV and NUV; lambda_eff= 1516 and 2267 A, respectively) is redder than expected for star forming galaxies. This color can be interpreted as a result of internal extinction, modified Initial Mass Function or by star formation histories characterized by bursts followed by quiescent phases.
