aDORe djatoka: An Open-Source Jpeg 2000 Image Server and Dissemination Service Framework
4th International Conference on Open RepositoriesThis presentation was part of the session : Conference PresentationsDate: 2009-05-19 03:00 PM – 04:30 PMThe JPEG 2000 image format has attracted considerable attention due to its rich feature set defined in a multi-part open ISO standard, and its potential use as a holy-grail preservation format providing both lossless compression and rich service format features. Until recently there was lack of an implementation agnostic (e.g., Kakadu, Aware, etc) API for JPEG 2000 compression and extraction, and an open-source service framework, upon which rich Web 2.0-style applications can be developed. Recently we engaged in the development of aDORe djatoka , an open-source JPEG 2000 image server and dissemination framework to help address some of these issues. The djatoka image server is geared towards Web 2.0 style reuse through URI-addressability of all image disseminations including regions, rotations, and format transformations. Djatoka also provides a JPEG 2000 compression / extraction API that serves as an abstraction layer from the underlying JPEG 2000 library (e.g., Kakadu, Aware, etc). The initial release has attracted considerable interest and is already being used in production environments, such as at the Biodiversity Heritage Library , who uses djatoka to serve more than eleven million images. This presentation introduces the aDORe djatoka image server and describes various interoperability approaches with existing repository systems. Djatoka was derived from a concrete need to introduce a solution to disseminate high-resolution images stored in an aDORe repository system. Djatoka is able to disseminate images that reside either in a repository environment or that are Web-accessible at arbitrary URIs. Since dynamic service requests pertaining to an identified resource (the entire JPEG 2000 image) are being made, the OpenURL Framework was selected to provide an extensible dissemination service framework. The OpenURL service layer simplifies development and provides exciting interoperability opportunities. The presentation will showcase the flexibility of this interface by introducing a mobile image collection viewer developed for the iPhone / iTouch platform
RNs Experiences of Enactment of Psychotherapy Act, 2007: A Mixed Methods Study
The College of Nurses of Ontario will comply with the Psychotherapy Act, 2007 by requiring nurses to initiate psychotherapy by an order from a physician or NP. This study examines the possible constraints to RN psychotherapy service delivery.
Quantitative and qualitative date were gathered from 23 RNs using Barretts PKPKCT to measure power of participants experience for the anticipated regulatory change.
Findings revealed concerns that RNs ability to practice psychotherapy would likely be negatively affected due to loss of autonomy, uncertainty and ambiguity. Research evidence has shown loss of autonomy and ambiguity in working environments is consistent with the findings in this study. Bureaucratic barriers to public access to RN psychotherapy, and the consequences of demoralization, devalued status and uncertainty regarding the changes to RNs practice are emotional factors that predict reduced ability for RNs to serve the already insufficient mental health care services in Ontario
A microprocessor based digital logic simulator
It is the intent of this thesis to acquaint the reader with a tool which is available for use in the digital circuit design field. The reader is now able to totally simulate via DLS the digital logic design he creates on paper before it ever takes a hardware form. The computer program accepts a detailed description of the schematic and creates timing diagrams, loading statistics, cross references, and various lists for future documentation.
The user needs no programming knowledge and will find the requirements to run a simulation with DLS extremely user oriented. The simulation descriptions and command language are tailored to logic design applications. The format is straight forward, utilizing standard English language and logic design concepts. To code a design for simulation the designer needs only a well labeled circuit diagram, where all the inputs and outputs of each element has a label With the addition of a few simulation parameters DLS will take the network description and form a program in memory which will recreate the operations of the digital circuit
The influence of loanwords on Norwegian and English stress
Rice (2006) presents a unified analysis of Norwegian word stress that applies equally to native words and to loanwords. In this analysis, stress is oriented to the right edge of the word, which suggests that the loanwords were responsible for changing what was originally a left-oriented grammar of stress. In this paper I consider a similar reorientation that took place in the history of English, also under the influence of Romance loanwords. Closer examination shows that the two cases appear to be different. Many loanwords of the sort that caused a change in Norwegian entered Middle English without causing any significant change in English stress. It was only in the Early Modern English period that the loanwords were able to impose a right-oriented stress pattern on English. Rice (2006) observes that the loanwords were able to change the Norwegian stress pattern without overtly contradicting the native words; that is, the loanwords could make a change only in aspects of the grammar where the native words were ambiguous. I argue that this principle also accounts for the English case

The arch not the stones: Universal feature theory without universal features
There is a growing consensus that phonological features are not innate, but rather emerge in the course of acquisition. If features are emergent, we need to explain why they are required at all, and what principles account for the way they function in the phonology. I propose that the learners’ task is to arrive at a set of features that account for the conÂtrasts and the phonological activity in their language. For the content of the features, learners use the available materials relevant to the modality (spoken or signed). Formally, contrasts are governed by an ordered feature hierarchy. The concept of a contrastive hierarchy is an innate part of Universal Grammar, and is the glue that binds phonoÂlogical representations and makes them appear similar across languages. Examples from the Classical Manchu vowel system show the connection between contrast and phonological activity. I then consider the implications of this approach for the acquisition of phonological representations. The relationship between formal contrastive hierarchies and phonetic substance is illustrated with examples drawn from tone systems in Chinese dialects. Finally, I propose that the contrastive hierarchy has a recursive digital character, like other aspects of the narrow faculty of language

Land-Use Attitudes and Local Election Choice: Estimating Effects of Land-Use Attitudes on Municipal Electoral Choice
Predicting voter behavior is a difficult task, however there are factors that suggest which candidates will be more successful. This study examined some factors that predict voter behavior in local elections and asks if local land-use authority can be a factor in predicting vote choice. Using survey responses collected from a sample of college students, answers suggest that some factors more strongly influence voter behavior than others. An analysis of survey results suggests that candidate party affiliation alone or candidate land-use attitudes alone are individually significant influences on voter decision making. However, combining effects of candidate party affiliation and candidate land-use attitudes strongly suggests that party affiliation and partisan influence far outweighs land-use in influencing voter decision making. Results of this study demonstrate that while local land-use authority is an issue that influences elections, it pales in comparison to the influence of party affiliation and voter partisan preferences. This discovery is important to understanding local electoral behavior, and how partisanship can be a dominant factor even in non-partisan elections
